Betelgeuse

I dont think FD will ever make massive events like supernovas happen. Think of what it SHOULD mean; You see the star explode. Then supercruise away 60 lightseconds, and see it again after a minute. The game isn't built around visible light going at lightspeed. Think of your targets in supercruise. If they are 200 lightseconds away, and the physics are correct, you should see them as they where about three minutes ago. But you see them as they are at that moment.

Also, the background starfield is a still image of the galaxy rendered from the system point of view (which renders during the jump). Sure, a supernova happens slowly by our time standards, but you will never see an animated background in ED.

But sure, if ED lightspeed is infinate, it could happen. But I doubt it.

Yep, supercruise does some handwavium and gives us the newtonian continuum, where changes are observable immediately no matter the distance. You do make some good points on the difficulty of doing a supernova in the game though - perhaps FD can come up with something for it - but obviously there are far more important things for them to be doing first.

That was fascinating - when the fuel runs out, gravity takes over, the star collapses and heats up again until it reaches the right temperature for the next level of fusion, and this process repeats all the way up to forming Iron. And for supermassive stars like Betelgeuse the final stage is a supernova, where the heavier elements are formed in the explosion in just a few seconds. Then what is left is a neutron star, and a nebula in which new stars will be born. Awesome stuff!

People believe this and then doubt Santa Claus exists? ;)

The time scale of stars (and the universe for that matter) is really too big to comprehend. It's always fascinating to explore in ED thinking "this may actually look something like this, but noone on earth will ever see it up close or even remotely up close".

They explode when they've run out of hydrogen (and other fuseable elements) in the core, you'd know this if you watched the Brian Cox thing
And you'd know that the hotter and brighter a star burns, the shorter its lifespan will be.

BOOM.

SCIENCE CHECKMATE.

I'm always captivated by the amount of real life specialist knowledge we the players bring to this game.

Is everyone except me in posession of a PHD in Astophysics or something even more esoteric?

The more likely explanation is that we all have OCD and access to wikipedia 24/7.

Or maybe that's just me...

Maybe it blew up in 1374 and we'll see it this year.

Which makes me think... When the star goes Supernova, it should disappear on the galaxy map, but should still be visible in the systems where the light has not travelled yet.

DEVS, CAN WE HAVE THIS?
:D

Assuming we don't get wiped out by gamma radiation bursts.

We should all load up on hydrogen fuel and dump it into Betelgeuse. If we do that enough we should shorten its life and make it explode.

A better idea is to load up our ships with Iron, then dump that into Betelgeuse
Iron cannot release energy when it fuses, so when the core of the star starts loading up with iron, and the temperatures/pressures get high enough for Iron to fuse, then the energy given off by the star's core drops to 0 and gravitation takes over
Hence the stars core collapses into a neutron star 30km in dia, and then the rest of the star charges downwards at a fair fraction of the speed of light before rebounding back out into space.

But then we'd have a serious logistical problem.. how do we haul what could be a solar mass worth of Iron into the star, I think that would take every ED player hauling Iron for 1000 yrs and doing nothing else....

Bill

But then I'm betting the ED player ARE ocd enough to do that :D

It would certainly make for an interesting storyline. The systems in the immediate vicinity would have all life wiped out in the catastrophe. But suitably geared-up specialists may be able to go in and help themselves to whatever was left behind.

The systems beyond the wipe-out fringe would still be severely affected, crop failures, etc, making for lots of food/medical/supply import missions and population evacuations to less sunny climes.

Unlikely we'll see this happen in game though, unless we are much further down the line and they are maybe trying to attract players back to the game.

The systems in the immediate vicinity may indeed get a bit knocked about, but the supernova explosion will only progress at the speed of light for electromagnetic effects and less than the speed of light for mass related effects. So a system 5 LY away has at least 5 years to pack up leave before the supernova wave front arrives etc. Now that's a LONG term storyline!

Bah what do you know about space? You're just a redshirt :p. Go "help" on the away mission.

Harsh man! Those of us who just stand and provide cover for the hero as we get blown away also serve you know.
.
Also how do you get the smilies to work? Do you have to know all the character combinations and let it translate or is there some arcane way of copying them in?

If you go to "advanced" when you reply there's a table with them. Most are converted automatically into pictures when you use the standard symbols for them.

I started an astrophysics degree, then changed to physics after the first year, so you don't need a Phd, this is first year stuff :D

I dumped my ship into a star, is that iron? :D

I have flown out to Betelgeuse, but it was rather uninteresting when I got there, and there was not even a good show from the nearest system. It is absolutely huge, however.

Should have stuck around a bit if it was a show you were after. The day after your visit Disaster Area played a surprise gig.

Of course, this means that Betelgeuse is now 50% closer to supernova than before, but hey....

They say we are "INSIDE" a supernova remnant :) Cooool
