Elite Dangerous : Money Grinding and number crunching.

You're treating it like a race to the content, when in fact the content in right in front of you.
Don't repeat the same trades over and over. Travel round visiting new systems and don't worry about money as long as you're paying your way and earning its all good.
The way you're heading is for the disappointing sense that you have finished everything in the game, and no doubt then start yelling for more content.

The only part of the game i enjoy (currently) is 'Shooting' other ships - but with the profits being so low in comparison to the mundane trading i'm mixing it up between the two to keep my sanity :)

So what's your goal with the trading? You've got more than enough for a fully upgraded Cobra or Viper and almost enough for a fully kitted Asp. You're not going to do better than those for a combat ship.

If you're determined to make money trading is the most efficient way. I suggest you break it up with other activities though; do some exploring or bounty hunting or whatever in parallel.

Well, I found a non-platinum/palladium run that's 3 jumps each way, and pays out 160k per round trip. For now... :)

I think the part Hitt0r is missing about using a L9 to do the same run he's doing is that he'll either exhaust supply or change the margins by dealing in that kind of volume for any period of time.

I don't actually mind making the same run over and over, if the profit is good. I, too, am after higher level ships. I have my eyes on...well, all of them. I want the Anaconda, but I think it has to follow a logical progression of working your way up the ships. You can't save for an L6 in a Sidewinder. I went Sidewinder -> Hauler -> Cobra -> L6. And I'll do L7 and then L9, and then Anaconda, most likely. Not sure about some of the combat ships. My Cobra is geared for both combat and mining, but maybe I should think about a higher combat-specific ship. Could be fun.

It's kind of ironic. I'm sitting here doing trade runs over and over (and making quite nice coin, thanks...no real complaints), and I'm thinking about it. "To what end?" Well, to what end in any game? I've played Ultima Online, EverQuest, WoW, EVE, and several others. What's the goal in any of them? Reaching for the next skill level, the next spell, the next gear, etc. They're -all- treadmills.

And in the end, you really may as well have an app on your phone which you just get alerts from at random intervals, telling you you've levelled something up. It would technically be the same thing as level progression, balance increases, etc. What would be missing is the response your brain gives by way of pleasurable chemicals when you achieve something. If it's just given to you, it's just "meh". If you worked for something, you feel a reward response.

Half the point is enjoying what you're doing, though. I don't know -why- I'm enjoying running the trade runs. Or mining, when I was doing that (and may again...although it certainly seems less profitable now!) It should feel like work. Sometimes it does (usually -right- after getting a new ship, while trying to gear it and being short on cash), other times it's awesome (usually past the, "Oh damn, -that- needs upgrading to make this even useful!" stage...say 50% into a ship).

But it's just the sci-fi setting, and it feels kind of zen/chill. It's like getting to drive around, without having to go out. :) Oh, and in an environment I actually like. And hey, how cool is a fuel scoop. Although, I did the math after a little trial and error (and almost frying my ship to ashes once...326% heat levels...OUCH!). Even if you do a perfect fuel scoop on an L6, the time you waste doing it is actually better taken out of profits from the trading, given a 4T cargo bay in the scoop's place. At least if you've got decent margins, it is on an L6. May not hold true on every ship or with bad margins.

I do plan on getting an Anaconda, then going out exploring. That's sort of my eventual goal, really. Ironically, I found this game while reading a review for "No Man's Sky", which I also plan on getting for PS4. :) But yeah, it's the journey. I'm an impatient sort, so I'll about something going too slowly... But if it went any faster, it probably would not trigger the same satisfaction.

Guess it's in how you look at playing, and whether you're an instant-gratification or a, "Let me at the endgame NOW!" type personality, or not.

I do find it funny that I hate the grind of daily work for -work-, but don't have any problems grinding in a game. Go figure. Hell, World of Tanks is much the same...grind, grind, grind for that next vehicle... And I have...and will.

I am thinking this may not be Hitt0r's cup of tea, though. Depends... -Why- are you playing it? I'm a sci-fi nut, so...it has all the reason I need.

Well there isn't another way currently. I went from a Type 6 to an ASP to a Type 7 and finally to a Clipper with 240t cargo which took me 20+ hours. To make trading less tedious I put some of the profits into upgrades and experimented with weight and modules along the way. Also during hyper jumps and long super cruising distances I usually read something, use my tablet, tidy up my room, etc. It's too bad that this aspect of the game is the same as in every other MMO, but at least I'll be having a lot of fun in the Clipper.

This is the truth:
Dude, dont try to "improve your profits" any more! If you keep grinding like that, you will have every ship and you will hate the game for the "grind", before the end of march! Stop trying to "win" the Elite, you will hurt yourself. Go have fun.
Why stress out over a computer game?

I am happy with my cobra.

Even in the training missions i'm kind of struck at the beauty of the galaxy. I watched the sun set over the curve of the planet during the docking demo, it took about 30mins (maybe longer), just sitting there drinking in the sight :)

It's kind of ironic. I'm sitting here doing trade runs over and over (and making quite nice coin, thanks...no real complaints), and I'm thinking about it. "To what end?"

I figure the trade runs built up capital to support buying and kitting out a combat ship to do some dogfighting for funsies, as well as cost of exploring - if you want to move to a different part of the galaxy, either you have to plan on a round trip, or you have to sell everything before you go. If I had a billion credits and got bored of an area, I could just leave my docked combat ship behind and sail off in my Anaconda for a few thousand LY to a new area, because why not?

Although, I did the math after a little trial and error (and almost frying my ship to ashes once...326% heat levels...OUCH!). Even if you do a perfect fuel scoop on an L6, the time you waste doing it is actually better taken out of profits from the trading, given a 4T cargo bay in the scoop's place. At least if you've got decent margins, it is on an L6. May not hold true on every ship or with bad margins.

Oooh, good to know.

It's really interesting, seeing the number of posts in these forums about being outraged because some people got a billion creds accidentally, or that there was no reset prior to release so the beta folks are ahead, etc., etc... and then launching the game and cruising around for an hour seeing only NPCs.

Do one yourself.
No, actually do two yourself. You deserve it.

Unless you can add value to the thread, cease posting.

I've managed to figure a Palladium / Marine Eq / Tobacco route which nets 877k in ~ 18 mins in a type 7 through a triangle 'route' (3 docks)

This is an average of 1260 cr / ton profit.

Yesterday some traders were at a star nearby which bought your stuff without docking. i think they were called 'seeking luxury's' I was able to sell them performance enhancers @ ~1000 cr/ton but this saves time in not needing to dock. If i could locate a dock in the same system, to buy return commodities then this is an excellent opportunity to earn big money fast. I just need to figure out what else these guys buy....

Here we go again. The goal is not to make money. The goal is to have fun while trying to reach elite in all three categories. Making money is only a method of achieving trader elite status. That still leaves combat and exploring. Combat is most fun in a small, relatively cheap ship like the viper. Exploring can be done in anything but best done in an Asp. Again relatively cheap. The people with their head screwed on are out exploring because they are picking off the low hanging fruit. If you spend 6 month trading then another 6 months fighting you will have to go a long way to find unexplored sytems

why the rush to make money? you already have enough to have lots of fun (in my opinion).

Take the Viper or Asp out and go shoot some stuff :) ... add a mix of trading and exploring in at the same time ... perfect balance.

The goal is not to make money. The goal is to have fun while trying to reach elite in all three categories.

Incorrect. Those may be your goal(s) but they are not everyone's goal(s). As a sandbox, there are no goals but the goals each individual player sets for themselves.

As a game, sure, a goal is "fun," but everyone has fun in different ways. FPS gamers for instance would never understand how the trading side of ED is fun, and that's fine: they don't need to.

The best money i can make is ~Cr2450/Ton in a 17LY round strip (2 stars) in ~11 mins (~270k)
Bounties for AI / anaconda's are pitiful @ 150k and takes ~30 mins.

Is there a more efficient way of making money that i'm not aware of ?

I own total assets of 16.6m Cr. (ASP/Viper + Money) If i go for a Type 7, i will need a ton of money ;

  • I need money for ship insurance (1m)
  • Upgrades will cost a fortune (The A4 FSD is 5m on the ASP alone!)
  • I need 3m Cr for supplies to trade after the purchase.

Estimated 16m credits once i've bought the ship, or 11hrs of non stop back and forth money griding - i'd rather watch paint dry.

I cannot think of any other way of making money faster than i am.

HELP!

26.5 million will get you a T7 with a A5 FSD, as much cargo space as you want, and have enough left to fill it with goods to start trading. You can get it with a B5 FSD for about 3 million less, if you desire. There was a post on reddit with more details, if you want to go read that (I don't have the link handy, but a google search should turn it up for you).
