The race to Elite - how are ranks gained?

OK for combat pilots I assume you gain ranks by killing other ships. Can someone confirm?

How do you gain ranks in Exploration and Trading?

Is it done, for example by number of trades, profit margin, money acquired, what? Does anyone know?

I would assume that trading and exploration progression are simply based upon how much cash (profit) you've made from each ?

For exploration, it is also how complex systems you have discovered, and for instance if they contain Earth-like bodies. The price you get for selling exploration data should be an indicator of how much it counts for levelling up.

Combat = Ranks up depending on the rank of the ship you are fighting. Much like an ELO system. If you are a novice and you take out an Elite, then your rank will go up. If you are Dangerous and kill a Harmless, then it won't make much of a difference.

Trading = Profits. The bigger the profits, the higher the rank goes up.

Exploration = Number of systems discovered and complexity of those systems.

If you need to ask then you are not in the race. ;)

If you follow the blue links here then it tells you: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Pilots_Federation

I don't think those are accurate, on that site the Merchant rank is 3.800,000 , i am still merchant, i earned over 6m in the last few days. According to that chart i should be one entrepreneur.

And i have seen plenty of brokers on youtube with pythons and 70m in the bank.

Trade is by profit, I am a dealer at 1.5M profit, and know that I need 3.8 to get to Merchant.....cant for the life of me remember where I saw it.

I just keep shooting stuff and got up to "Competent" rating last night. I've also achieved "Surveyor" in exploration. Not sure how high those are, but it seemed to take me awhile to get there. Trading I'm "Mostly Penniless" because I'm not a spread sheet nerd and I haven't spent the time to trade much. Trading seems boring, even though I may be forced to figure it out because that is where the money is, unfortunately.

no the site is correct you have over 3.8 million profit thus you are merchant.
and if you have 70 million yes you should be broker that is more than 33.9 mill but less than 131 mill (where over 131mill is for rank entrepreneur).
read the description more carefully, you understood it wrongly.
Personally I'm still under 33 million, so I'm still merchant but I'm really close to broker as i got clipper and just over 30 million

Elite?

Is this total?

I am a Peddler but i have definitely never made 100,000 on one trip but have made a hell of a lot more than 750,000 in total... Or is it actual CR in bank at one time?

You can track all your trade statistics in game on the right hand panel under - Status - Statistics - Trading

Does anyone know the new rank systems for combat? I am currently Novice and have 139 kills. I've been looking for a break down but can't find one, or is it still being worked out since beta?

Combat: Number of kills. Apparently your victims ranks help gain higher ranks. unconfirmed as in no one has actually measured slaughtering X number of harmless's VS X number of Elite's.

Trading: Pure profit from trade. 1 Billion give or take in trade profits required for Elite rank.

Explorer, Same as trade, Rank progression based on profits made from selling exploration data.

Yeah I understand the mechanics just trying to find the number of kills required for each rank. Obviously this may depend on what ranks your killing if that is true.

It depends A LOT!

the guy who made it to Elite via capital ship helping hand. Needed I think 2000 kills for dangerous. Somebody else got dangerous at 2400 bounties and 24MCr I believe.

Me, I got it with 4200 and 36MCr or thereabouts.

Of note is the bounty claimed counter goes up by 2 or 3 if you kill an oponent who has bounties for multiple local or global factions.

A lot of my kills were at a RES with KWS with quite a bit of double and triple bounty oponents. So even though my counter says 4200. I probably barely crossed 3k kills. Still way more than the Elite dudes 2k. But that is he was at warzones with predominantly dangerous and up oponents. While I was at RES with predominantly Expert and Master Cobra oponents.

TL;TR save yourself the hassle of looking for that table. The counters vary so crazily depending on where and what you fight. They are essentially useless.
