Space Station scale

You can always argue that the open areas are necessary for long term human residents - to keep them from going insane and claustrophobic in the confined quarters.

Human is very adaptable so living in confined quarter should not be a problem in Elite :)

There will be different sizes of course so we will get large ones and small ones. One thing I was thinking especially from seeing some of the art work is that some look like their docking ports are not on the centre axis, if they rotated as well goodness that would be a massive challenge.

You could have of course an extremely large station but if you have an enormous docking port it might remove the challenge of manual docking a little...of course you can have smaller docking ports or ones for different sized ships as well as station and onboard computer asissted docking as well.

I was thinking about his post last night when I launched out of Abraham Licoln...my ship is spinning until it leaves the local gravity well (which makes no sense, since the station isn't rotating), but it made me realize that if you're close enough, and the mass relationship between the ship and the station is such that the smaller object will effectively become a satellite of the larger, then wouldn't the ship orbit at the same velocity as the station's rotation?

All you'd need to do is maneuver to the docking port and fly forward, hopefully not so fast that you fly into the interior bulkhead...

Human is actually less adaptable psychologically than we like to think. Today's society and lifestyle, for example, is causing us all sorts of stress-related problems and illnesses that most of us don't even realise. Living for years confined into narrow corridors and quarters could easily cause all sorts of psychological and psychosocial problems.

I know but in Elite, humans can live years in space station or in a ship. Humans have evoluated and adapted there life. This adaptation has perhaps taken a lot of years (or centuries)

I'm going on my own experience here, but there are only few things people can't do - for example, live in narrow spaces in regular *random* stress situations. If these situations are predicated, well managed and people just know what to do and how to deal with them, it becomes non-problem. Also having actual plan and someone in charge works. Good management skills for leadership cut down stress considerably, be it space station or submarine. It is clear that stations should have some really nice large open spaces for crews to relax. Be it stars gallery, hologram forest or anything else.

Also for this I'm actually quite interested in legend how we would explain rather quick communications we have. Some sci-fi universes uses term "hyperspace transmitters". Having actually possibility to connect with someone else also deals with stress considerably.
