Maximum loan amount waaay too low!

AMENDMENT TO ORIGINAL POST: Okay folks... Although a handful of people were unpleasant about what was merely a suggestion, the majority of replies to this post were polite and made good points... and have consequently managed what very few people manage: You have changed my mind about something. I still think there should be more detailed information about how your insurance is divided up (weapons and equipment costs to replace etc.), but I am old enough to admit when I was wrong. It was my own stupid fault, and an upcoming lengthy absence from the game made me impatient. I am a seasoned Elite Dangerous player, and a player of Elite since 1984, and I should have known better.

Thank you for your comments.

ORIGINAL POST BELOW -

Go ahead laugh all you want to. Quote the tireless "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose" rhetoric... but I really think the loan amount cap should be a lot higher than it is.

I spent the last several weeks (since Gamma in fact) working my way up to an Asp. I had it for a few days, but was really struggling to make money from trading, so I tricked out my vessel a bit and went in search of NPCs to kill. No problem. Starting racking up lots and lots of bounties. Empire, Alliance, Independent. Just on my way to cash them in, so that worrying about losing my ship would not be a problem again, when I was interdicted and very swiftly killed by a player and lost all the progress I had made since Gamma.

Right back at the beginning.

It's a shame, because I don't think there can be many players who love this game and have anticipated its release more than I have. My friends are sick of hearing about it; I have made countless ED videos; and I have very proudly and happily mentioned may times that I have been waiting for this game over half my life.

...then I was (stupidly, I admit) taken out of the running and set back to absolute zero, by what I consider to be the game's only gaping flaw: the insurance system.

I love the realism. I love the game. It looks great, it plays great, it sounds AMAZING, and I'm sure I will return to it once back in the UK and settled in a new house. But I do think this system is far too unbalanced.

Please Frontier: I'm not asking you to give us unlimited resources, or remove ANY punishment for dying at the hands of another player. But at least raise the maximum amount of loan necessary for rebuy.

The loan is a safety net for new players. Infact if it wasnt for them I would say remove it altogether. Its not a bottomless pit of free cash for players in asps+.

You get insurance, and thats enough. If you fly without insurance dont expect to be given it anyway in the form of a loan.

Anyway... since I am moving house in the next 2 weeks, it will be quite some time before I play again.

It's a shame, because I don't think there can be many players who have done more to publicise this game in their own personal social network than I have. My friends are sick of hearing about it; I have made countless ED videos; and I have very proudly and happily mentioned may times that I have been waiting for this game over half my life.

I make regular Elite Dangerous videos (again, trying very hard to publicise this game online), but there won't be any more now, because I was working my way up through the ships and now I am back at square one.

No.

Learn to save enough credits for all eventualities.

Welcome to ED.

yet another one of these threads... groan. - on the right panel there is a figure that says how much you need to buy your ship back... make sure you have this amount before you set of - simples!

Personally, the loan amount is TOO DARN HIGH - it should be zero!

>>> I love the realism. I love the game.

Realism? - not many people can go out and get a 200k loan. I want a new car, hmm I'll go get a 200k loan tomorrow.

You know the risks involved with open play this is what makes the game so good deciding whether to take the chance with no money for insurance, or deciding to take on a player or run to play it safe you died it happens start again..

Fair enough. As I said, I know I was stupid. But as far as "Bottomless pit of cash" goes: They take 10% of everything you earn until it's repaid anyway. That's punishment enough for some people.

They should make a feature so you can put some money away into another account, so you dont spend them by accident when you are in the commodity marked etc.

Incidentally... just to clear up one small point:

When I said "there won't be any more videos for a while" I didn't mean I had rage quit. What I meant was that I had one more video to make before my big move, but now I can't really afford the extra time to get back to that point before I move. Elite certainly hasn't seen the last of me. I've been playing since 1984, and I'm not about to stop because of a simple issue like this.

I guess that might be a good idea, but it would be misleading to say I spent them by accident. I didn't. I knew exactly what I was doing. It's just that I had no idea until I bought the thing that the Asp would be so ridiculously expensive to rebuy (I mean the rebuy jump between that and the LT6 is horrific), and by the time I got up to the point where I had enough to rebuy it... BOOM.

I was honestly, in supercruise, on my way to the station to cash in enough bounties that it would no longer have been a problem.

Or just, y'know, don't spend the money in the flippin' first place without checking the cost versus the rebuy cost of your rig!

It would be worth it to increase the loan amount just so I didn't have to see these "I lost it all" threads. It is heartbreaking. I really do feel sympathy for you.

Maybe just let them use a loan once a month, and you can't do it twice.

Or maybe no loan at all then we won't get any threads about the loan not being enough ?

I find the race to get the Asp quite fascinating. Having played both FE and FFE and having waited many years for this, the 4th incarnation, I bought it on the 19th Dec and have just, today, bought a Cobra MKIII. I always have the float to cover my insurance and cargo and just bimble about the galaxy as my whimsy takes me. I learnt in solo and now play in open.

I will get to an Asp one day, but by then I will know exactly what I am doing.

Too True! There would be blood on these forums if they did increase it. Seems like a lot of the players here take perverse pleasure in other's misfortunes.

I don't know, it's just a game. It doesn't hurt me any if this guy who boosted into a wall stays in debt with his Asp or starts over in a sidey. If anything it's worse this way because it's more likely he will leave the game and I won't get to pirate him in his asp.

But at least raise the maximum amount of loan necessary for rebuy.

A simple No . FD should remove the loan system altogether. This is called Elite:Dangerous and not Elite:HelloKitty .

They should make a feature so you can put some money away into another account, so you dont spend them by accident when you are in the commodity marked etc.

Just no, could be exploited by creating another account , starting fresh and selling your ship and transfer the money to the other account and rinse and repeat. So just a simple No to that too.

Yes this is the same way I see it.

Really? Again with this? OP did you know you were flying uninsured? You do know that your current available cash and your insurance rebuy are clearly visible in the same place, one on top of the other? All that is required of you is to compare the two numbers to determine if you are about to leave the house commando.

It sounds as if you were impatient and foolish.

Been here all along thanks. I was a kickstarter and early Beta backer.

Then you don't really have an excuse. Sorry, don't mean to be unduly harsh but you knew you were gambling with your invested time in the game. Sucks to have lost it all but that wasn't the game's fault. I don't blame the bookie when I lose my life savings and the use of my legs.
