Make retrieved goods sellable like purchased goods

Whether I find stuff floating in space or I steal them, the items should be treated the same at some random station I sell them at. Finding things floating in space or killing a pirate and having all his loot around becomes much less of a reward and more of a chore if you have to hunt down some shady station with a black market to sell mundane items like minerals simply because you scooped them vs bought them from a station. This is dumb.

The black market should be a way to sell items that are otherwise prohibited in the system. The caveat is you would have to dodge the patrols scanning for contraband. If you manage to make it to dock and not get found out, the black market would be there to give you very high profits for things that are prohibited.

Wrong. Cargo gets tagged to it's owner. The owner has to specifically untag it for it to be sellable by anyone else. Makes total sense.
What I'd like is to be able to fly to a pirate outpost, have them break the encoding on the cargo, for a fee, and then be able to sell the items in the open market.

I love this idea as an alternative to selling on the black market. It may take some time for them to crack the tagging, or it may be costly. They may even require a mission or two from you before they agree. Good stuff!

me being the "good" bounty hunter that i am. when i am about to kill a scumbag carrying slaves he dumps them into space. now i have a choice to let them all die or pick them up and chose to be wanted and sell them back into slavery (i guess at least they are alive).

with the moral delema of saving lives aside, if i come across dumped goods why are they all 100% "stolen" (beter term would be illegal). i agree that some(not all) found goods should still be legal to sell no questions asked.

i also would like a way to ether change goods to "legal" or return it to its proper owner. as a bounty hunter i belive hunting isnt just about bringing the person to justice (dead or alive) but also returning lost goods to the owners

There is a proposal for Salvage in the DDA that should deal with the "all cargo found in space is stolen" problem for players who did not cause it to be in space in the first place (;)) - we're waiting for it to be implemented.

that's awesome! but he even states that it is separate from cargo i'm talking about picking up dumped cargo and returning it. (this is a good start though)

How about:
Cargo that is illegal probably wouldn't be tagged. It's unlikely anyone would want to have a trail back to them if the items are discovered by authorities. Anarchy type stations would be prime places one would assume "tagging" doesn't take place on any item. Thus those items would be untagged if jettisoned into space. So then we would be able to tell if items are tagged or not tagged and salvage and deal with the tagged and not tagged as needed. (Tagged items would only be sellable on black markets or back to anarchy type stations). Untagged items wouldn't be considered stolen since it's widely known that anarchy stations do not tag their items, but untagged items due to their dubious nature always get an additional tax since they must be tagged and entered into the system (paperwork tax).

this would also give you a kind of risk assessment when trading with stations that do not tag items since you would be much more of a target for pirates since your items can be sold anywhere vs you carrying tagged items.

I just would like to see more of a reward available to players who decide to hunt pirates since they tend to drop their cargos rather than those players forced to leave that extra loot to rot in space because black markets are not readily available and you're treated like a criminal by default. Sure, you could be pirating a pirate but if your standing is good with the station you're selling to, it shouldn't be assumed the items you have are stolen vs recovered.
