Newcomer / Intro Private Group Not Working

Hello.
Me and my friend just bought this game, and we were under the impression that it is a multiplayer game.

I am in the United States and my friend in in Australia.

We added each other as friends, then made a group with just us two, but when we join a private game we are not at the same station??

It would be nice if we could force our systems to connect to a certain server or at least see which server we are connected to. Is there a way to do this?

the ip address of the matchmaking server you connect too is shown on the start screen. that said its not a client/server game, the server only handles matchmaking between P2P connections and galaxy information, the rest of the game is handled via P2P between players and as such it may be tricky to play with someone on the other side of the world as you will have a high ping/latency between your computers.

My server is 54.75.114.126

His server is 54.170.20.117

How can we align these?
We don't care if there is 10 seconds ping.

Kind of a useless game if we can't connect to each other.

Well, it's bit of a work, but you can use a program like CyberGhost to change your VPN to the (for example) the city your buddy lives in. Then the game will connect you to the same matchmaking server and you'll be more likely to meet each other.

Word of advice, though, VPN tunneling is illegal in some countries. Plus it adds to the ping.

You have to travel to meet each other, you mentioned you weren't in the same station, so you both are probably at your seoerate starter locations, so you may have to travel to meet up.

I play this with 2 friends from Canada (I'm in the UK) and we've had no issues playing privately, apart from I had to travel 162ly to meet them!

Do you mean the station has a different name by "not at the same station"?, if so you are not in the same place in the galaxy, you need to meet up.

If you are at the same station, then its a matchmaking issue and I can't help, sorry.

I never said whether we were or weren't at the same station, so... EDIT: For clarification, I meant instance. (I think that is the right way to say it.)

In the game we are both located at the same station in the same star system.

We are going to try modifying the host file to trick local DNS into connecting us to the same servers.

Is there a list of server IPs?

UPDATE:
changing dns doesn't help, it also removes all npc ships. So that doesn't seem to be a solution.
(I changed all 6 main IPs I could to my friend's IP)

What a joke of a multiplayer.

Can't even connect with anyone you know??

I love how no one seems to think is might be a problem.

the game was advertised as having co-op last june in the beta, but it's always pretty much been broken. Hence the big "wings" update coming thats meant to fix it.

I play with my friend in Open mode, private group never worked, but since adding each other as friends we see each other 90% of the time when in the same place. That said we both live in Victoria so our pings are matched well.

So try running in Open mode, though I have my doubts as I have never seen any one in the game that wasn't from Australia.

if not have to wait for Wings update.

I was chatting to a CMDR at a nav' point the other night. We were taking turns on wanted ships...

He was from the UK. I am in Canberra, Australia. Chat even worked really for us...

Obvious troll is obvious. Especially since nobody is saying there are not problems.

Just in case any new people are reading this and don't want to be misled.

Yes, you can play alongside people you know and meet up and chat. Currently the MP aspects of the game can be a little wonky and there are some bugs (comms can fail if not in the same instance or play mode). Most of this should be addressed when FD do the wings update soon (TM) which should bring improved multiplayer functionality.

@OP - random starting locations mean you will have to travel to meet up. Don't worry, its not as bad as it looks. You should be able to meet your friends within a few hours of play (hint: the universe is big, can take time to travel, its not Skyrim :D). Also, since comms are wonky at the moment, recommend using a third party chat program until it is fixed. eg: Mumble or Teamspeak.

Here is what helped me a lot.
forward a port in your router and then put the port in the AppConfig.xml in xour ED folder.
The person that forwards the port has to open the private group and should connect first if one of you has IPV6 DSlite and the otherone has IPV4 the persn with IPV4 has to forward and update the AppConfig.xml.
works for me all the time.

only problem i have at the moment is with a group bigger then 4 i only see 2 other commanders but not the third.

Me and my friends who are all over the world have been testing this and for what its worth (until its fixed) here are a few things we noted about what works and what doesn't.

1. We have more problems in busier (highly populated) systems, though we play on private servers the population is made up of NPC's but this seems to still be the case. We have had considerably fewer problems finding each other after we went to less busy systems.

2. The determination of where you end up is made on start up not on log in. Another words, after you have created your group and everyone has accepted, have everyone shut the game down, have one player start up and join the private server than have everyone else start up and join the private server. This fixes the issue about 95% of the time.

3. Play on open server. For whatever reason, we have fewer problems on open servers than we do on private ones. 95% of the time we end up in the same instance when playing on open servers by default.

Right now though the multiplayer experience is quite terrible and clearly Frontier has noted that and are addressing it in an upcoming update. Strictly speaking though the game right now is suffering from quite a number of pretty gaping oversights, most of which can easily be fixed and have already been brought to Frontiers attention loud and clear. I think six months from now this game will be 1000% better if these oversights are addressed, the obvious one like you just mentioned is on the list as are a large majority of other silly things. It can be a bit frustrating though, I find the whole "everything in space is stolen" mechanic to be quite stupid. After all whats the point of being an explorer when once you actually find something if you take it, your a thief. Silly things like that I think will be addressed, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Am I misunderstanding something here. I was under the impression Group was the same as Open and Solo in that it will spawn you at the last location or station you last saved and exited at. E.g. if I was docked in LHS3447 Dalton in solo or open, when I join group, I will be at that same station. I would then need to travel to where my friend is/was when he last saved and exited unless it was in the same place?

Sorry guys I was working.

Hence the big "wings" update coming thats meant to fix it.
- Any eta on this patch? We would be okay with just playing solo until this patch comes out. We just mainly got the game to be buds.

He was from the UK. I am in Canberra, Australia. Chat even worked really for us...
- At least there is hope then.. Did you guys do anything special, or did this just happen? Were you able to play together since?

Don't worry, its not as bad as it looks. You should be able to meet your friends within a few hours of play [etc...]
- I would say we were lucky then as we both spawned at the same station. (Different instances though.) We can't even use the text comm, so yes teamspeak it is.

only problem i have at the moment is with a group bigger then 4 i only see 2 other commanders but not the third.
- I will try the suggestions but this seems strange to me, was the fourth able to see you guys?

a few things we noted about what works and what doesn't.
- We will try your suggestions. Yea what's up with everything being stolen from space!

Am I misunderstanding something here.
- In my few experiences it seems to work as you mentioned; I am always at the same station when changing game modes.

You have to find each other! if he is in a different system, go to that system. or he has to go to your system.
I got a friend and now we docked at the same station in his private group!! ;)

Do you have to be on the same server for private group?

Me and a friend have not been able to make it work..very annoying.

No, not at all. It is, however, flakey right now. Often if you log in at the same location it won't instance you together, but if you both jump to another system you will be instanced together there.

This is all a known issue and they are working on it. The upcoming "wings" systems should bring great improvement. None of which helps right now, of course. :(
