Oculus Rift

I was wondering if any one from FD could comment on what plans there are for the Oculus Rift. I know sort of works now but I also know there are some known compatibility and UI issues (galactic map for example). Is FD actively working with Oculus on perfecting the integration or is it still a niche peripheral and will be for the foreseeable future?

The Rift and ED have a great future. But, it would be foolish to invest too much development resource into product that has no release date. So I'm guessing that there won't be massive changed in the short term.

I hope they will continue to work on it.
I'm still waiting :

  • Direct mode support
  • Better performance for a steady 75 FPS (fps drop in stations, supercruise, etc... with no particular reason)
  • Misc fixes : shadows, smoke, distants asteroids (different in each camera eye)
  • Better galaxy map (usable mouse)
  • Ingame UI color switcher with a default theme suitable for the rift
  • Ingame FPS counter (visible in the rift)
  • Adjustable left/right panel distance
  • Ingame ship clock
  • Visible paintjob (from cockpit view)
  • Finish modeling / texturing of some ship exterior (from cockpit view)
  • Realspace 3D (Coming with the new SDK)

I can see what you are getting at and fully understand that. If I were FD or Oculus I'd be clamouring to get into bed with the other. ED is the near perfect showcase platform for the Oculus and the Oculus (already) adds so much to the game play and immersion that when I play without my Oculus I feel handicapped!

Hi

Setting up the galmap in VR takes a bit of getting used to, but, whilst VR specific improvements I would wellcome, once you get a control system you are happy with, elite IS currently fully usable in VR, even the Galmap.

I have not played elite on a monitor since july, I play it 100% of the time in VR, inc plotting my routes etc. I have full 6DOF controls in the map using my joystick, tho I do use my mouse sometimes on it as well.

The only time I remove my headset, and even then it is only a nudge up, is if i need to make a note of a system which has something worth coming back to (so a system with black market & resource extraction & more than 1 faction close by) you know the sort of thing. (which incidently in the future I would hope would all be in game as well.

I know I am not an FD person, but my 2p anyway. I LOVE the rift, CV1 will be a day 1 pre-order as soon as I can, but, imo it WILL be a niche device for the 1st year or so even of CV1 imo, as at the start it will only be for gamers with high end gear. This will change as the inevitable march of progress brings the low end tech up to scratch to support it properly.

Only if they disable automatic side-panel pop-up. /em shamelessly advertises his own suggestion thread.

There's an option for this already, no? I remember playing with various settings and made mine so that I had to press a button for the panels to pop up - looking where they were supposed to be did nothing. I changed this back to default, but I do remember doing it!

Any chance you could give some more detail about how you set up the Galaxy Map to make it usable? I tried going back to a monitor yesterday so I could use the map for a long trip, and I hated it

I don't have any real trouble reading text in the OR, it's just near impossible to click on anything with the mouse.

I can when i get home but at work right now. I use an X55. i can send you my custom binds if you like?

edit.. screw it. ok from the view imagine you are "there" and looking from your perspective

I use the yaw on my stick to spin around.
the directions on my stick to go, in the FPS gaming sense, forwards and backwards and then strafe left and right.
I use the top spinning thing on my throttle to go up and down (height)
and then use the bottom spinning thing on my stick to rotate forwards and backwards. (ie like the pitching up and down in your spaceship)

I then use the middle mouse button scroll wheel to zoom in and out (also you can left click the mouse and then move the mouse around and it will rotate around the central fixed point on the map but this may make you feel sick as it moves so fast... personally I just use mouse for zoom).

I then use the 2 4 way hat type buttons on my throttle to navigate the map menus (the same way I navigate the menus in my HUD in the cockpit)

personally I find that all works fine with practice. If you have an X55 like i said you can have my binds.

if you do not then you will have to fashion a similar custom control yourself.

This is good list of the areas that need attention on the Rift. Really, it's not a whole lot...

I also think that FD would do well to focus on the Rift - it may be niche, but I'm willing to bet most Rift owners have also at least tried ED (if not, they should!)

Thanks a ton for that, I use an X52 but I'm sure I can set up something similar. I'll have a play with it later.

Sort of. If you pop up the menu on the Right, it won't automatically pop up when looking Left. And of course, vice-versa. I use this little work-around to get a good side view when I'm performing unorthodox landings. I would welcome a toggle function to have the automatic pop up. When involved in combat, it would be nice to not have them pop up when I look, but most of the time, I find the auto-pop up very convenient.

I also use my HOTAS for all the Galaxy Map (and even system map) navigation. While it works well, I'd love to see the mouse become usable again.

One thing I'd really like to see in the game that would make the Oculus experience far better, and improve it for non-Rift users too, is the ability to record price data in systems you visit. It doesn't even have to be an automatic thing, but something like an in-game notepad, or screenshot. I would hope in 1000 years, we still have the "Print Scrn" button. Right now to get commodity data, I need to take screen shots and update after the game.
