Elite Dangerous in the Media thread

Elite: Dangerous is a beautiful game and an amazing space sim let down by a universe devoid of character and low on excitement. It's great to fly the various ships and experiment with different loadouts, and there are a lot of different roles to play in Elite that helps keep the experience fresh. But without any special missions or narrative threads to pick up, and a universe that seems more mechanical than alive, Elite also seems far smaller than its 400 billion star systems.

Sums it up pretty well.

Very good review for the current state of the game. Here's to hoping that pretty soon we see some stuff come our way that makes a new review necessary.

+1 to OP and the IGN reviewer. I have over 200 hours in Elite since Beta... only about 5 of those hours since it went to v1.0... I've had enough grinding.

Seems about right and pretty much what I expected at launch.
The game has a way to go and I hope that FD can find that spark that will bring this engine to life
7ish is about right

I like this bit :

"But there's a reason these simulation games get their hooks into so many people, and it's happening to me in Elite. I find the routine becoming meditative. I like landing, bringing my ship for smoother and more assured touchdowns each time. I love, always, the little countdown before a hyperspace jump, as I push the throttle all the way to the stops and hear the flight computer saying, "Three… two… one…"

I think this is true... its possibly the reason this game keeps dragging me back for more, even though the depth of the game is somewhat lacking, with regard to army/naval progression, story line doesnt seem to have historic mission availability... or linear / branching story content... it still inspires awe, theraputic monotonmy and sheer beauty.

Indeed, I agree the "moment to moment" designers (as FDEV call it) did a great job.

Over to the missions, background sim and context designers now!

That 7.4 on IGN sounds/seems about right to me, I'm happy with that, and as we know there is much more to come that could easily be an 8.4 in 6 months or so, (hopefully!).

I made a huge mistake in the past and that was when I used to care about game ratings.

Turns out I missed a LOT of good games that had a short life because of they were not so popular but were legitimate good games.

Screw those ratings, play the game and judge yourself.

It appears some game review sites are seeing the glitz start to fall off the game after a few weeks of review. Check out IGN and PCGAMER.

PC Gamer originally gave Elite an 86. but It looks like extra time in the game is seeing the boredom set in.

I think they have done a pretty good job. Yes the grinding IS boring and YES its empty. Lets wait till end of the year to see what ED has become - or perhaps what it should have been on release.

It's funny how when the reviews are great people jump up and down saying how accurate the reviews are and they are honest reviews. When the reviews are bad people say they don't care what reviewers say....lol. Whether you care or not it could certainly affect the sales of the game in the future now that the real fans of the genre have already purchased it.

I totally agree. Being realistic is a good thing.
