Elite Dangerous in the Media thread

It's funny how when the reviews are great people jump up and down saying how accurate the reviews are and they are honest reviews. When the reviews are bad people say they don't care what reviewers say....lol. Whether you care or not it could certainly affect the sales of the game in the future now that the real fans of the genre have already purchased it.

So You're assuming they are the same people? I never said a word about reviews until now.

Well, the PC Gamer guy is doing it wrong.

I always seem to wind up fighting a ship with the same turning speed as my own, meaning some fights feel like a fruitless exercise in trying to get behind someone who's always behind you.

Buy better thrusters. Use deceleration. Go backwards. Boost. Boost and turn. Turn off flight assist...

...so I stop to do some mining (I'm immediately joined by a handful of other NPC miners who have just happened to arrive at the same discovery at the same moment)...

Drop into a random part of the belt, not a marked part.

I wind up with just under a ton before an asteroid runs dry

Prospect higher proportions of the element of choice.

This adds more and more clutter on the radar, so even when I've dislodged the chunks I need, they can be hard to target and collect.

What, one chunk is hard to target? Why are you blowing them all out before checking if they're what you want?

PC Gamer Guy said:
Sometimes there are dozens of objects to visit, which can take ages. I only have an intermediate discovery scanner...

So...um...buy an advanced one?

WoW gets similar reviews if you only equip half your gear before a dungeon.

reviewers don't know what they are talking about, which is why the reviews change over time. I'm sure some of them could extrapolate from the start and find where the result was and give it a suitable 7.5-8 ish but some of them will have been like kids in the candy store where the sight of chocolate distracted them.

I mean they are supposed to be professionals, I saw straight away that this was lacking content it didn't take 2 weeks more like 2 hours if you got out and explored. Doesn't change that its an amazing engine with some fantastic polish, or that I (and many others) love playing it anyway. Its probably the best shallow game i've ever played its great, made it to python and still having a great time!

I didn't assume anything about YOU. I'm just making an observation about the forums in general.

I know, is just that the way you said it it seemed like it was the same people changing their minds because the reviews were different. That would surely be funny.

there sure needs to be more to the universe than what we have now. Get to work guys, give us a game that we are proud of not just a frame work

From my experience, I take anything IGN says with a pinch of salt.

Reviewing all the latest COD's 9/10

Calling games a terrible game, yet giving them high reviews.

There has also been a number of cases of alleged payments from publishers. They'll go to review events, and mark up a game based on their experiences there, without actually disclaiming that they went to said review events.

IGN are just not trustworthy enough for my time.

Game journalism needs a serious overhaul, if we - the consumer - are expected to take them seriously.
That's why I'll always fall back to a handful of youtubers that I trust for an objective and non-biased review.

Why are some people getting so defensive? Those are both pretty positive reviews.

The doom-and-gloom merchants were wrong. Remember all those predictions of terrible reviews? Hasn't happened and never will as pretty much every major site has now reviewed the game.

The game does have flaws though and there's nothing wrong with reviewers pointing them out.

HERE HERE who cares IGN mainly cater for shoot-erm-up don't they.
From the review:
"Yet for all the freedom in Elite and the superb graphics and sound, I still find it a little too barren of character and flavor in this world. News bulletins tell me that the Federation is teetering as its productive colonies secede rather than pay taxes to a decadent and exhausted core.... but that's just words on a page. You won't meet anyone with an opinion on this brewing civil war, or receive a mission that somehow gets you involved in the fate of a star system. The Federation forces seem interchangeable with local police forces, which are almost indistinguishable from the navy of the Autocracy."

I'd say that's pretty spot on.

Well the original thread about this review is here https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=97949

Seems that wasn't the case. Here is another generalisation for you; everyone on a gaming forum believes that everyone else on the forum disagrees with them because one or more people do.

It's funny how some people will just be happy with negative reviews.
Actually no, it's sad, not funny

IGN is getting better. Dan Stapleton is someone I admire since his PC Gamer days and he is trying to bring a more up to date ethos to IGN.

Rob Zacny is also an incredibly intelligent reviewer who I have always looked to for strategy based games. I think his review was perfect and summed up the highs and lows of Elite while mentioning that it's a good base to build off. Sadly though people will see IGN and a sub 10 score and immediately go "Hur dur it wasn't CoD so they wouldn't give it a perfect score"

I used to rate IGN but these days it seems if it's not a first-person shooter or a Marvel tie-in, they're not interested. That said, I don't particularly disagree on any point in that review.

Who cares what other people think. I like it, thats all that matters.
Actually you should be very concerned what critic's say.

A game that gets a good review gets more copies sold ... more copies sold means more money for FD ... more money for FD means more expansions and content for us.

Yeah but in this game case, good reviews on mainstream sites like IGN will only bring more clueless people.
Last night some kid said he was going back to WoW because it's much better and has more direction. Also added that he doesn't play games to use his imagination or some dumb stuff like that

Selling ED to people who know what it is_:good
Selling ED to the wrong type of people: baaaaad

We have enough dumb trolls as it is

7.4 is a great score.

And its perfectly normal to become bored once you have spent a significant amount of hours with anything.

I have read so many review of this game that it all becomes meaningless.

The simple fact is, you either like the game or you don't.

If you like the game you will post positive comments, if you hate the game its always negative comments.

This game is great and I am fully enjoying it. The only thing which lets this game down is coming on here.

Reading the IGN one I can say the guy is clueless..

"The space station is roughly 250,000 light-seconds away from the main star in its solar system, and even at faster-than-light speeds, it's a long, boring flight to get out there"

really not surprising, sigh

The PCGamer article guy is not the same PCGamer guy who reviewed it. Different people with different experiences playing ED. Not everyone will like the game, no harm in that

It blows my mind that some people react as though these reviews are attacks on their person. The reviews seem pretty even-handed, and I don't really disagree with anything stated.
