There isn't anything in place to stop this and there NEEDS to be. not 15 secs but 2 minutes i would say and not traveling but just stationary idle. People would re-think pulling the plug next time and just warp out or stand and fight. I have only played this game in open (I LOVE IT) and pulling the plug is an issue that needs to be fixed.

This will happen until FD fix this mechanic. Closing the process or pulling the plug should leave you flying in a straight line.

.... or possibly have the ship controlled of an AI of similar combat rank with the aim of escaping via an FAD before being removed from the game.

THE ONLY TIME! It was actually last night and I was in a Clipper, docking and all of sudden I'm hovering over my bay (and yes I checked!) and it was saying I was causing a docking infraction and counting down - I started heading out the station and it was STILL counting down but I wasn't going to make the exit in time.

Actually I lie it was the second time - the first time (again in my Clipper) was when I was also docking and it decided to jam me in the docking flaps and would not let me go, and my shields were being gradually drained.

Those are the only two times, actually both in the last couple of days and both in response to docking bugs.

I've only ever done it when there is a reason I need to be away from my PC now, not in 5 minutes time. Most recent example being when my 2 year old (on NG feeds :( ) woke suddenly and started vomiting and pulling at his tube. Being on a laptop I just hit the "Aeroplane" button and walk away. It's never fallen in combat (closest was during some manoeuvring in SC to avoid a suspected interdiction), but I doubt I'd have done it different.

But never just to save my behind in a fight, that's pretty low.

I save and exit when I get stuck in a station with the exit blocked by a T9. I probably would too when interdicted if I would trade in open. I don't since there are no benefits to playing open at all for me. Sorry I'm not playing the game to provide content for others. Same in Dark souls, invaded means I sign off.

Anybody who does this should have a 10 million credit fine. But seriously..

Could we please have the DC cooldown increased to 30 seconds, and have the AI take over the ship during that time which will try to escape rather than fight?

The only time I've pulled the plug was because I was stuck on a jump between systems for 7 minutes, and in the rift it can become lonely.
If I get my ship blown up, I pay the credit, get a new one, curse a bit and then go back out or take a few minutes to get away from being sad and then return to the game.
I don't do this for moral or ethical reason, just that it would be immersion breaking for me to do so for this type of game.

Pulling the cable is just weak. If you dont want to encounter humans, play solo or in group. If you play open you accept things can go down the drain fast and you can die. Intentionally disconnecting from multiplay is flat-out cheating, IMHO. Only exception would be situations as Titan Balls described, but I havent seen that happen myself, or sudden and unexpected real-world distractions. By all means, don't let your two-year old starve because of our little dogfight. :p Beyond that, just don't. If you don't have insurance: tough luck, you made that descision so accept the risks.

But I guess it has to do with personality. I love to play iron man/hardcore, the possibility of consequences entertains the mind. Others would much rather be able to reload the minute something bad happens and prefer predictable and incremental progress. I guess these people are more likely to be traders, play only partly in open and pull the plug when in danger more frequently. Doesnt effect me in any way so far though as very few people bring their haulers to Warzones. ;) And the few trader-cmdrs I saw outside were all clean except for one 300CR bounty in a shieldless hauler. But sometimes I wonder if being less aversive to risk might make this game more fun for some. Trading while pulling the plug in every encounter seems both terribly lame and boring to me...

Only time I tried to pull the plug was when I entered the station full of gold in my T7 without asking for permission and I couldnt get out...it wouldnt let me...i lost 2.5M for being a dumb ass. Even then I only tried as a last ditch at 3% hull due to a vague recollection of it being discussed during PvP combat which tbh is unfair and in bad spirits.

Why would anybody ever do this? Solo mode is right there on the main menu!

Some people want to have human interaction without human conflict, so solo isn't what they want. Since the game doesn't provide a PvE option, some players use this exploit to play pure PvE in open.

BTW, some people do this in solo too. Pulling the plug tends to "rewind" a bit of gameplay, so if done quickly it can be used to reverse a bad outcome. Kinda like reloading a save (well, technically it is that, as pulling the plug forces the game to reload your last "save" and discards everything done since it was last made).

Also: peer to peer networking makes "fixing" it hard to do; the game isn't happening on Frontier's servers, it's happening on the player's machines, with just the results transmitted over to Frontier. More so because there are other, more elaborate, ways to fake a network hiccup, ways that can make it nearly impossible for the server to determine who pulled the plug, in which case punishing anyone has as much chance of punishing the exploiter as of punishing the victim. So, I might be wrong, but I'm not sure there is a reasonable way to prevent this or punish the player that does it.

I don't. Fortunately I think most people are used to online games having anti-cheat mechanisms built in to prevent such exploits, so many don't realise it works in this game.

This system also allows them to engage in PvP with less risk. If they're shooting up newbie Sidewinders in their Cobra they can "pwn" and have fun, but if a Python interdicts them they can just d/c. It also works equally well against NPCs, so for anyone it's an extra life cheat whether you're fighting players or NPCs.

Quitting a fight pretty much negates the whole point of open play. The whole thrill of the fights is to do with the potential multi-million credit loss you are about to make, which makes you fight tooth and nail to survive.

I'm loving open play at the moment, but I have seen a LOT of people quit when they start to lose the fight. I think a lot of people believe that investing a large sum of money into a ship equals a win. When a decent pilot comes along in a cheaper or equal ship and starts to win they cant handle it and just quit.
