Newcomer / Intro Hauler vs. Adder for Trading : Updated Information

Last night I gave trading a go and so picked up the two affordable ships (Hauler and Adder) to determine which felt right for me as a trading ship and the end result has been rather confusing. Made more confusing by rather inconsistent information on the next as it appears there have been changes made to these ships over time that make a lot of the advice obsolete.

What I'm trying to identify is the drawbacks and benefits of each ship as it applies to trade.

From what I have gathered the Adder despite not being a purely specialized hauling ship actually has more cargo space, is that correct or am I missing something?

Also it appears the Adder is faster, more maneuverable and has a higher jump capability? Which begs the question why would you use a hauler over the Adder since their prices are almost the same?

Any information would be helpful. My goal is to have a short range hauler, so Jump distance is not a big concern, nor are defenses, I think its all about cargo space for the most part. I think I will do longer jumps later, which may bring in other factors but I can't help but have the feeling that I'm missing something.

Well the adder should be about 30k more expensive, and if fitted propely the hauler should be able to get about 2 more extra ly of jump range.
But basicly imho, if you can afford the adder get that. If you can't: get the hauler, haul some stuff and get the adder, and work towards the cobra, then T6 etc.
I liked the adder better overall.

Gameplay wise either the adder should have less cargo space or more and a higher price. Right now the hauler is kinda silly.

Yeah that was my impression as well. The price difference is negligible, earning 30k is not much of an accomplishment even for a new player, so beyond the very minor price difference I can't see any benefit to the hauler over the adder at all. 2 extra Ly I guess is something, but in as a whole these are both relatively short range ships anyway so the impact of this benefit is extremely limited. You aren't going to be holding up in a fight in either of these ships against much anyway so defense is not much of a consideration either.

I was hoping that there was some "trick" to making the hauler more useful but it appears to be as I suspected from the start that the Hauler is basically a useless ship which is unfortunate. It really should have 1 extra cargo hold.

The Adder has more weapon mounts, making it more versatile, but from a pure trading perspective there's little in it. I went straight for an Adder and never used a Hauler. The Adder can be fitted for exploration too, and I worked out a config that gave it over 25ly jump (no cargo, but adv and surface scanners and without loosing shields).

So I think the Adder could be considered multi purpose, whereas the Hauler is pretty much a transit van for light trading only.

Yea adder is really multi purpose. If configured as a fighter, the adder is really good. Second best manouverable ship in ED, and no power problems like in the eagle.

Before the adder was introduced the hauler was the next step to the cobra.

But we found other uses for the hauler.

Put class A FSD in it and D's for everything else. Add an A class fuel scoop, intermediate scanner and planetary scanner, Remove weapon and add a point defense. Now you have an Explorhauler, takes two jumps to get from Sol to Lugh, (52ly direct - 2x26ly )

Oh and make sure you paint it yellow.

Once I had about 120k int the bank i decided to buy a bigger ship with more capacity. I bought the Hauler as I assumed that was the next trading step. Was a bit disappointed in the loadout, and did one run in it beore i discovered the Adder. Dropped the Hauler in favour of the Adder immediately.

I'm sure that it has its limitation in certain roles that the hauler can beat it at, but it was more of an all rounder for me. So I'm happy with my purchase. Even made a bit of money BHing in it .... though have also had to replace it on insurance as well!

... 2 extra Ly I guess is something...

Just want to mention that the longer your journey, the more this matters - if you're trading rares for example, by the time you've traveled 160 Ly, you'll have save a fairly significant amount of time due to even a 2 Ly larger range. In general though, I agree, it seems the only reason to buy the hauler is if you're dying to get out of the Sidey before you can afford the Adder.

I'm planning on using a Hauler as a commuter bus to get me quickly to my T6/Cobra from where I'll have my Viper parked for pew pew'ing - totally stripped out and with a class A FSD

Trading Schmading, pfft. What a waste of this great little ship.
Well, I kind of trade in my Adder, too. I just don't pay so well :p
