Well, I just pledged...

Welcome to the club, OP?

Incidentally - a question to everyone else: was the pledge money taken when the project reached its target, or will it be taken upon release? I can't remember...

Welcome Crystles :)

Thanks some more!

Also, since theres still some helpful friendly faces perusing this thread, I'll just post this question here rather than muddy up another.

I just read the Ratings and Reputation design document. It brought up a question that wasnt specifically addressed.

Some of us, me included, qualify for Elite: Founder status, which from my interpretation means I can start as an Elite. Cool! But what if I want the challenge of earning that myself? Can I have certain characters start with that reputation, while another (perhaps a pirate, yarr!) starts from the ground up?

Also, would we be able to transfer items between our characters? And if so, how? Or is this not designed yet. Its kind of a double edged sword, since a high rep character with tons of cash could essentially "twink" another, more elicit character, ensuring plenty of cash flow and little-no risk financially to this PVP character.

Lastly, the universe is huge! (and I mean ridiculously huge). Is any one else concerned with how theyre allowing players to split themselves up into smaller shards of players? We dont have a ton of people right now, and that fairly low number will be fractured even further between time zones, and these player "groups". I'm personally concerned that running across another player will be such a rare occurrence, that it will almost be unusual.

I suggest that you have a read of some of the threads on the PvP / PvE "debate". If you search for "PvAll", some of the most vociferous discussions pop right up.

I think a lot of us want the option to start without the founder status, so although nothing has been confirmed, I would imagine that it will be possible. In a minute I'll stick a post on the DDF, just to be certain the devs know that it's what people want, though they've probably already got wind of it already from the general forums.

Not sure to be honest. It's quite possible twinking will be limited in some way, but I can't remember hearing anything official on this.

Some people are. This isn't being touted as an out-and-out MMO experience though, so possibly it doesn't matter so much. If you stick to popular areas, then you should run into people quite often. If you're out on the frontier, running into an unknown player should be an interesting experience! I imagine co-op will be a big thing for exploring in deep space.

Firstly, I believe that starting as an Elite Founder .. is not the same as being 'Elite' you still have to earn that ... you just get benefits for being a 'Founder' you will not start as 'Elite' ... to my knowledge ...

And as to transferring things between characters (items, cash ..chicken vindaloos) Again, as far as I know this will not be possible ... unless you have two computers running two separate accounts.

No, you start with the benefits of a Founder Elite pilot, ie getting certain discounts and extra missions, but you still have to earn the rank Elite, which is good! :)

As I understand - the Founder status does not mean you will start the game with the Elite status.

After all there are several routes to getting Elite status, killing pirates/players with bounties, trading and exploring to name a few.

Founder means you have access to the founder world as a start at the founders world + a founders title/emblem.

To be able to start the game already with the Elite status would defeat the whole purpose of the game.

I dunno. The Kickstarter kind of suggests you start as Elite.

Kickstarter FAQ said:
“The Elite” are a secretive group of intrepid pilots. Throughout human space, there are a great many people that have been helped by “The Elite” over the years, and because of this “The Elite” are treated well, wherever they go. Whether it be discounts on buying special items or repairs, and the small number of founding members even greater benefits. Other benefits include a greater likelihood of being offered rare missions or opportunities. Membership is offered to pilots who have proven their ability by reaching “Elite” rating within the Pilot’s Federation, but the founding members are not put through such an indignity. All “The Elite” are entitled to display a special silver “Elite” emblem, and the founders a golden one with the word ‘Founder’ beneath it.

This has come up a few times before. You don't start the game as Elite. You start as usual. When players become Elite they get a bunch of benefits. Founders still have the usual rating but as Founders of the Elite they get some of the benefits an elite player will have (discounts from some people, blah) think of it as Elite Junior but you're not rated as Elite. And if you want the full elite status you have to work for it. Eventually... you can be Elite and Founder just for the sheer prestige of it.

I think this is one of those threads where clarification from Frontier would be great.

Indeed. It would be interesting to know what people want from the whole founder thing. I'd personally want to start out the same as everyone else, but definitely would want a gold 'badge' rather than a silver one when I got to Elite. Also access to the special missions when I'd reached Elite, if they weren't available to non-founders.

Cool! As per usual, thanks for the replies!

MOAR QUESTION!

Ship control - I havnt read much on this yet, so I'm curious. What kind of flight model are we using? Can we expect some loosy goosy Newtonian model where the ship slides around, but avionics keep it on a more or less stable, atmospheric flight path, or something else? This is what i've been led to believe thus far from the snippits i've gathered.

Also, can we turn off the flight computer, that will allow us to fly around, slide, cut thrusters and keep drifting or fly backwards (to return fire on those pesky tail chasers mayhap)?

Last, What of 6 axis control? I dont think i've seen anything of this yet at all. Still reading through the Design Discussion Archive, so forgive me if any of this is addressed. I've just always appreciated having good powerful strafe drives on my space ships. Why make a huge maneuver, when you can just shift a little right or left and glide around obstacles/weapon fire. Plus it allows for some quite interesting acrobatic "drift" maneuvers, such as swinging around a capital ship while keeping it under extended fire.

Basically there's Newtonian physics behind the flight model, but there'll probably be a fairly hefty dose of 'planes in space' type flight. There's been mention from the devs about possibly turning off flight assist, but turning your ship round and firing backwards might be discouraged, because apparently it made for boring multiplayer when the devs tested it. I think the devs are probably still working on it and tweaking it to find out what's best.

Space planes is fine, but what's really important to me is strafe drives. It just feels better when I can slide around while maneuvering. Can't think of any space Sims that don't, but was curious enough to ask.

Actually, one of my favorite atmospheric flight Sims had strafing. Echelon: wind warriors.

Wow! Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Welcome to you in the Elite family. One of the particularities of forums Elite is the friendliness of the majority of backers. This does not prevent critical thinking and the conflicts sometimes between backers. But mind Elite is something unique, I think.
