Suggestions for arming Cobra MKIII

Well I reached 500K credits a couple of days ago so bought my Cobra yesterday. Nearly back up to my 500K but will hopefully be up to about a million later today. I'm looking for the best way to arm it. I've made some upgrades already and the current setup is:

Cobra Mk III

Power plant upgraded to D
Power distributor upgraded to C
Thrusters upgraded to D
Sensors upgraded to D
FSD upgraded to D
Cargo upgraded to 36T
ECM
Heat sink
Docking computer

Currently the arms are as standard

1 x Pulse laser (bay size 2 - fitted 1F)
1 x Pulse laser (bay size 2 - fitted 1F)
1 x empty (bay size 1)
1 x empty (bay size 1)

The docking computer is only there for convenience today whilst running a bit of a monotonous trading route.

I was thinking of two size 2 beam lasers and 2 size one guns..... Does that sound ok? The budget is around 500-600K

How much difference does it make going from D thrusters to C or B? There are a couple of stars that always scar the $£%£ out of be in FSD whilst on this route as I can only just turn quick enough to avoid them. Will the thrusters help there?

Thanks

The main thing about arming the Cobra is that the small (Class 1) hardpoints under the wings are very far apart, and fixed weapons placed there have trouble converging enough so that they can both hit the target. As a general rule, you want gimbal weapons on those hardpoints.

The medium (Class 2) hardpoints are much more central and close together, so fixed weapons are easy to use there, if you like the extra punch that fixed weapons offer. Of course, you can still put gimbal weapons onto those hardpoints if you wish.

I don't know if thrusters make any difference to manoeuvrability in super-cruise. I suspect not, as they don't seem to make any difference to acceleration in super-cruise. I think thrusters only have any impact in 'real space' flight (but I could be wrong).

I'm using 2 x gimballed multicannons (about 75k each) on the class 2 hardpoints and 2 x gimballed beams (about 58k each) on the class 1 and find this pretty effective. Beams cut through shields quickly and the cannons chop up hulls. However, I do have a better powerplant and distributor than you which would definitely impact usability... costs are a guess by the way, but should help you find the items I mean :)

A few folk have had success with fixed on the cobra if u separate them to left and right firing. i.e put fixed beams on the left of the ship and fixed mc's on the right as that way the 2 alike weapons are close to each other, you just need to fly to accommodate the off-centre positioning.

Keep saving. Mine's worth over Cr8m, and it's not finished yet...

Look to upgrade to an A3 distributer ASAP - it really helps everything else a lot.

A for thrusters, go to A as quick as you can - it makes the Cobra much more agile, not to mention better boost and top speeds.

Once you've had A4 thrusters, everything else makes a Cobra feel like a fridge.
Z...

Just have a second whilst docked..... What difference is the A3 distributer going to make? How?

Will read weapons stuff whilst docking at next place :)

Get rid of the docking computer!

I said, it's just for today :)

My current set up cost 10.4M Cr. Nearly finished

I use beams (500k apiece...) on the medium hard points and gimballed multicannon on the small. They work nicely, and with the beams being fixed I don't loose my most powerful weapons if the target starts ditching chaff.

Thrusters don't appear to make any difference in witch space. They make a difference manoeuvring in combat though. I had to hunt around a bit to find the class A Thrusters. With the upgrades I tend to think that skipping B (they are heavier components) and going straight from C to A is a good idea.

Also consider upgrading your sensors if you rely on gimballed weapons, the better sensors will help with targeting.

I've taken down most ships up to a competent Anaconda with this se

You will be able to boost more frequently and keep firing weapons for longer. Also improves Shields, not strength but I believe recharge time.

Thanks everyone, some useful tips there..... The docking computer is currently docking so I've got a couple of minutes :D It's the only reason I've got it, just for today, whilst doing this money making round trip...... Looks like I might need to get my money up to 1.5M Cr then :D Still waiting for the 45K I lost yesterday due to the server glitch to come back too.

If you want to have fun, get 2 Whatever Laser weapon you prefer for the medium hardpoints and on the small hardpoints get 2 Cannons.

Suure the popular multicannons are easier to handle and you'll probably get more hits because of that, but there ain't nothing that feels as good as hitting an enemy with real Cannons after their shields are down.

I held off buying a Cobra for a long time because I was aiming to go straight from Adder to Asp. Glad I bought the Cobra though, but it did mean when I bought it I upgraded almost everything straight away so I don't know what the standard load out is like to fly. I spent almost 5m in one go when I bought the Cobra. But if I want to make credits the Cobra makes them much quicker than I would have done in the Adder.

Currently I have my Cobra stored after a few days of BH missions in the Cobra I fancied a jaunt to the closest neutron star and blackholes, so I'm in the Adder for the weekend. It's good to change things about a bit.

If you're like me you've bought the Cobra and thought "....these upgrades are more expensive than the starter ships" - class A comes in at 1.5m, just don't get into to much of a grind, to me the credits come organically while I'm having fun.

My Cobra currently has fixed Class 2 pulse lasers in the medium hardpoints and gimballed Class 1 multicannons in the small hardpoints (not sure of ratings for each yet). Since I'm not a dedicated combat pilot, more of a 'trader with teeth', this generally serves me well but I'm definitely looking to upgrade those multicannons since they don't seem to have all that much punch now, just not sure what to - cannons, fragment cannons, missiles or just better rated m-cannons?

I've been thinking about switching the multis for full size cannon. May give that a pop when I get back from my exploring jaunt.

Dude get Cannons, they're the most fun! Hard to hit at first but sooo satisfying when you get a handle of it.

I've tried all manner of different weapons, all the way up to Plasma Accelerators. What I like best (at the moment, anyway) is dual gimballed multi-cannons (G1) in the lower mounts with dual rail guns (B2) in the main mounts. The heat buildup is high when you fire the rail guns, but with an A4 Power Plant and A3 Distributor, it goes down again fairly quickly and I can one-shot small ships :)

How much are the power plant and distributer?
