Docking computer crashed my ship

imo the choice is simple..

Use a docking computer and wait 2-3 mins while it docks, or dock manually and be docked in 20-25 seconds then go afk.

It's a no-brainer really.

That would make sense if we got extra points for speed docking. It's not a race. I enjoy docking fast in an Eagle, docking slow in a Type-9, auto docking and enjoying the view, manual docking with FA Off. It's just choice dude

Your choice. Some people aren't in a rush to jump around.

Does anyone actually use a dockng computer?

I think it's safe to say that the poor old docking computer is a little bit naff to say the least, but is anyone actually using this back stabbing little beastie? In the original Elite the autopilot was supposed to be a little quirky and drive you through the back of stations, as there was little else in the way of threat. However with Elite Dangerous there are plenty of threats including players sniping ships in the letter box etc, so why not fix just fix the docking computer and make it reliable so the only worry is queuing to dock. As it stands the docking computer is little more than a curiosity and soon sold.... Shame as I enjoy the nostalgia!

I've been playing since the early Betas, got up to Merchant in the trading class and Scout in the Explorer. I've always used a docking computer, and have only had a little bit of trouble docking at the outposts. At the main stations I've never had any trouble at all. Sure, sometimes the landing would be a little ... uh, enthusiastic, but my shields take care of it. I can get up and do other things as soon as the docking computer takes over. No bouncing off of walls, crashing into other ships, no landing in the wrong pad.....

Perhaps the situation improves with ship upgrades i.e. Class A thrusters....

I have never used a docking computer. I find manually docking to be enjoyable. My first ship was destroyed trying to figure out how to fly and dock but I have since improved.

Also- 'Flight Assist' is another one I have yet to try.

What Jim said. Used one from as soon as I could afford it in Gamma. The only quirky things its done is very occasionally tried to land the ship on its side at outposts, and slam little ships like Sideys and Eagles onto the pad so hard that they reverberate with the clang. Other than that it's been flawless.

I can't wait until we can walk around in stations and ships. My first act of sabotage is going to be going around and installing these things in every commander's ship I can access.

It's not smart enough to fly the ship by itself. Between the endless hovering over pads as it tries to orient, or trying to land on anything but the landing gear, or attempting to enter the station from the sides or rear, I chucked the bloody thing and used the space for something else.

I honestly think that the AI for the Derping computer was a relic left over from the ancestors of the Pakled race. My old Sears/Atari Pong game from the 70's could do a better job landing the ship. :D

I used it three times and got fined for loitering three times. Decided it was costing me too much money and got rid of it.

I swore I wouldn't, but I do and it's fun.
Pilots like a drunk but I can at least do other stuff while it docks. And I've not had any issues with it at all.

The NPCs use docking computers. I think that's all that needs to be said.

Lol true enough. I was shocked the first time I saw an Imperial Clipper "lost" on the top-side of the metal Cage, hiding away the station entrance. It -really- didn't understand how to get away from the station-hull and kept smashing itself against it......
.
I looked away as I dared not watch the cruel fate that befell the poor pilot ;)

Judging by the state of the NPC's getting stuck and blown to bits in every major station its not a very safe option

After being impaled on the port by an NPC docking certain areas seem to have a contact issue, its like velcro, getting away with a 600Cr fine is a good outcome after my experience frantically trying to free myself - successfully

I like to dock myself as it's quicker and a lot less scary, however after a long haul or long bounty hunting session I'd definitely like the option to auto park while I'm in the space loo.

tried it once.
it kept my ship hovering above landing pad, but for some reason did nothing more. 2nd time similar situation.
i guess manually i can land a lot faster.
