ELITE Shoulder

+1 to everyone giving advice on repositioning. My HOTUS was rather painful the first day (that warthog spring is TOUGH), but a simple chair-height adjustment solved all problems.

Find something less taxing on your muscles asap - it will only get worse if you try and just "man up" through it.

omg, back in 84 if someone got Elite Shoulder they would just get a needle and some thread and fix it, these days people create new forum threads for anything...

seriously though, sorry to hear about your pain :(

Some good advice here about posture. I have suffered the same pain too.
The height of the X52 is my key problem, so I always raise my chair before playing.
I am sure the Saitek manual had a health and safety section that I neglected to read :p

Am I the only one that once reading the title, thought he was referring to the pre-release trailer clip of the pilot walking and the Elite logo on the shoulder?

Lol yeah it's late.

Rep for this ^^

As well as posture, it may be this kind of injury is related to the competitive element introduced to Eilte, by the multiplayer aspect. The tendency is to want a quick turn around in station, take the next flight, next trade run, without stopping to smell the roses, as t'were.

My view is to try to make a habit of taking a break, when landed in station. This should probably be part of the routine each time you land. Get up and make a cup of coffee or use a different mouse to navigate market screens so that you force yourself to stretch. Even role play it? And imagine you're out of your seat, in the station, while your ship is having maintenance done?

I've resigned not to be the one who wins any prizes for being first to Elite (that will be some young scamp with no issues of RSI) and take plenty of time, enjoying the journey not the destination. Good posture in seating seems essential too.

edit: Elite Shoulder is probably the gameplay equivalent to Muscular Atrophies or Bone Weakening, suffered by real Astronauts, living in zero G eg. on ISS. Don't forget "eye burn," from Cosmic Computer Screen Radiation!!

I used to suffer similarly.

All the above advice taken into consideration, the most important thing is to make sure your posture is good and you get up and walk around now and again. Wave your arms around. Also I never have my desk against the wall but rather face the room so i can excercise my eyes by looking around sometimes.
Apart from that...
This is the thing that has helped me the most, I think.

Got a wired one of those a few years ago. Never use a normal mouse now if I can help it.

Get your posture sorted...

If I tensed my arm and raised it by 2" when playing WoW, well, 5 years later I can no longer lean on my right shoulder in bed!
Had a golf ball sized lump of tensed muscle ion my shoulder.

Thankfully a good masseuse fixed it for me but since then, I always rest my elbow on the desk.
Even if I forget about it for a couple of days in work? Same - Shoulder starts to ache.

For me it was 100% posture :/

If you're extending your arms too far forward, you're stressing the crap out of the muscles and joint, which is why they hurt.

Ideally, you should be able to use the sticks/HOTAS with some support from the arms of your chair, rather than reaching and extending to use them.

I'm thinking of using the mounting technique that Grumbleweed mentioned. I saw that post back during Beta and thought it might be worth looking into.

That's the thing Valethar I am not stretching, my elbow is resting on the arm of my chair and I am seating correctly, I think I have put it down to either I have been getting to tense while fighting ships or my Arthritis has moved to my right shoulder. So if the deep heat and pills don't do the job doc said he will have to give me a Cortisone injection :(

Yep I do try and role-play the game a bit and I am in no rush to get to ELITE, I say to myself I cant get a coffee until I have docked at a space station :) sad I know but this was how I done it back in 1984 except it was a different drink then.

Nasty :( ex Wow player myself but I came away unscathed by that one. I think a lot of you are correct and it could be my posture slightly. I wonder if my arm should be rested level height with the joystick because at the moment its a few inches below?

Just found the lever which raises my chair btw....
