Done playing

Well that's a first on me. No cheats equals bad design. Gotcha.
Actually: spending weeks grinding the same missions over and over and over is what is bad design.

Though yes: for a game to be able to set you back hundreds of hours of play would also seem, to me, to be bad design. YMMV

At least you owned the fact that the cause of this was your own mistake...
Yes I did. A fact which seems to have slipped by an awful lot of the people responding.

But my mistake has highlighted for me some of my issues with the game design, and why I have chosen to stop playing. On the up-side: this has gotten me back into X3 after a few years away.

Although there are many issues with ED in it's current state, not holding your hand at all and leaving gameplay choices up to the player is not one of them. If you chose to spend weeks "grinding missions" then that was your choice.

All 5 methods of advancement in ED are grinds.

So, take this idiotic rant for what it is - my wish for the game: see 154% crusty raging (yes, it IS causing ship damage) below:

Quit snivelling. Leave. Life doesn't give you a do-over. Neither should Elite. I think it should be harder. I think it should utterly wipe you out if you have to use or you DIE IF YOU FORGOT TO PAY FOR (that's right! You used to have to PAY for the darned thing!) the escape pod and are not forward thinking enough to keep enough money on hand to deal with what comes your way. I think you should be stuck guiding people to their landing pad, having an hourly McJob until you can afford enough to buy a Sidewinder, or better yet, introduce a new ship that only can collect the detritus from the mail slot entrances, which you can sell for salvage. I think you should be able to sell yourself as an indentured servant (a fine way to refer to a SLAVE) for a period of time to gain enough money to buy some meek form of transport that comes with nets and ball bearings for weapons.

Enough of this "Why is teh gaem hard? I'm done." Life is merciless, and so should this game be. We have pirates to kill. We have bounty hunters that make people furious. We have traders that complain that prices are often terrible. You smash your 2009 Prius into the back of a 1976 Caprice Classic, no one gives you a Smart car. Elite should be the game equivalent of a crime against humanity as far as how gentle they should be.

Lots of people complain about the direction that FD has gone. Imagine how some of us who normally just let you prattle on would make the game, AND BE THANKFUL.

So, with that, please, take your leave, leave us no more of your griping, and stop groaning about how hard done by you are in a game.

Shoo.

While I appreciate your gusto, I can't help but think that attitude is counter productive. A online community that wants to thrive should be welcoming, and not all cliquish. That's schoolyard crap. Some people are going to complain and vent, and they should be allowed to, but we shouldn't try to make them feel unwelcome, either. We can't be allowed have a narrow scope of what the "right" kind of ED gamer is. That only ends with leather jackets and snapping fingers down alleys to musical numbers.

Right now he thinks X3 is a better experience for him, and hey, it's a fine game in its own right. Kept me going a long time before I found Oolite and ED. At core he really is still one of us when you think about it. So I say best of luck, and check back in with us when some of the add-ons come around. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I'm still curious why you are here, responding to posts, when you've uninstalled the game. Looking for someone to talk you out of quitting? Looking for people to agree with you say you were right to quit?

To me it starts to feel as if every player that decides to quit the game has the urge to create a forum thread about it to let us know. Perhaps there should be some kind of self-help group of counseling for people (rage-)quitting the game. "Hi, my name is Bob. I crashed my brand new ship while docking and don't have the money to pay insurance to get it back."

It's not about being cliquish. I'm just tired of so many people complaining. I'm happy with the direction the game is going, and mostly, I was trying to be as strident being opposite to what so many people complain about. It's a game. I'm sorry he lost so much, but it's not a surprise. So many other people have harped on it, and no one is at fault but the people who ignore the other people's complaints.

Except this is not really about the game being too hard.

Its about it being not fun and too grindy.

The OP gave us feedback before disappearing into another game and its good to have feedback. It's good to know the reasons why players leave the game.
There would be many more who don't bother with forums at all.

True, but it stopped being helpful feedback the 60,000th time.

Yeah, but not everyone frequents the boards as much as others. Some might only come here just before reaching the breaking point. Or even if they've been here a while, but because they've invested so much time they feel they have to say their piece before they go. It's the nature of community.

I think the problem is that we see these complaints often enough from a variety of people, but because we're faceless internet specs here, it starts to feel like one big guy who won't shut the hell up. Just remember that's not the case.

Translation: This game is causing a *lot* of people frustration because of a design element; so much so that they are quitting playing.

And not that I'm looking at the threads: there are a lot of people not "rage quitting" complaining about traffic control at docks, damage on collisions, failure of NPCs to use lights at docks.

I sense a theme in the whining of those who have come on the thread I made to complain about the thread... they see *many* of unhappy players over the same issue.

That's kinda significant.

Elite:Tenacious :) Overcoming setbacks is what makes progress more than just an illusion. Enjoy the journey, don't worry about the "end game", make of it what you will.

I would think that quantities would be useful.

Though I must wonder how helpful all of the "suck it up princess" responses were to the 60,000th thread either.

There's an irony in how this thread has progressed that has me both shaking my head and giggling at the absurdity.

Yes it is absurd.

Some people legitimately say "I don't think there's enough content on here, so I'm going to stop playing and maybe I'll check back in".

Others "I've accidentally blown up my ship and coincidentally at this time, I've also lost interest in the game".

So the player error somehow translates instantly into a fault in the game.

We get it, you don't want to reinvest the time to make up for your mistake. You've "better things to do". I guess this means we can milk your post for all it's worth before you go, hence the responses.

What did you expect?

So how would you have liked us to respond to a thread like this? I mean you are leaving the game for good. So what do you expect to hear?

I'm pretty sure deep down there somewhere you yourself know that it was your fault flying without insurance, not the game's. You knew the harsh consequences it might have if something goes wrong. So it shouldn't be surprising that blaming the game instead will not get much sympathy around here...
