Are scans seen as an act of aggression?

The reason I'm asking?

I'm a law-abiding commander of a lil' ol' Cobra Mk III. Never had a bounty, never traded illegal goods. I fly at safe speeds at stations and have built up a good reputation in and around the Lave system.

However....

Yesterday, I docked as usual at Lave Station. Picked up some coffee and moved to exit as normal.
On the way out I see a very large ship about to come in. For the first time ever, I decide to lock onto it to see what kind of ship it is. But the moment I did that I recieved a penalty notification and the station opened fire on me. Destroyed in a few seconds before I could react.

I carry no weaponry, nothing offensive or defensive (not even a shield), the space station was almost certainly not in conflict with the other ship, so I wonder what else could possibly have triggered this event?

Sounds like you took too long in leaving the station and/or clearing the letterbox.

Passive scanning (ie. targetting the ship and holding position facing it) isn't hostile, but active scanning (with a KWS or Cargo scanner) may well be. I've never tried in a station before.

Since the 1.05 update, I've had stations telling me off for deploying hardpoints during docking/station exit.

I've always stowed them at that point, so can't definitively comment further, but this suggests that maybe the docking rules have changed in the no fire zone.

To further clarify, I left in a timely fashion. Less than 1 minute I would guess. I did not deploy hardpoints (had no weaponry anyway!) I have no scanner equipped other than the one that comes as standard with the ship.

Possibly a bug do you think?

In 1.04 I did a test with both cargo and kws scanners, tried scanning ships close to a station, even inside a station, even tried scanning the authority ships that circle the station and nothing happens. NPCs just do their usual evasive moves when you start a scan and i think they deploy hardpoints too but apart from that its perfectly legal. Not tried it since 1.05 though

Is it possible that while getting yourself pointed at your 'target' you reduced your speed sufficiently to be considered loitering over a pad near the exit?

I loitered in the gateway for around 10 seconds whilst I stared at that behemoth. I wasn't over a pad and got no warning that I was loitering. I'm quite sure I get more than 10 seconds to clear an area anyway :D

Do you have a point defense?

I lost a type 6 full of cargo the other day, was a wierd issue with stations too...

I had requested docking , I did stop inside and try and center with the pad (The lights were not working properly as usual).

I didn't get a 'stop loitering' warning or a timer countdown , I have no weapons/hardpoints to deploy , didn't scan anything.

I was just about to move towards the pad (10 second wait at most) and all of a sudden I get the 'you were warned, don't tresspass' message and the station opens fire and destroys me in 5 seconds flat.

Only thing I can think of was I was blocking the entrance but server didn't warn me....

I'm guessing blocking the entrance only gives you 10 seconds tops and no countdown , not like blocking a pad......

I'm OK with the lower timer before response, you ARE stopping all traffic in AND out...but I DO think it's a bug that you aren't given ANY warning before you are detroyed, you SHOULD be warned after 5 seconds and given a 10 second countdown at LEAST.

I agree, that's probably what caused the issue. And if it is, it seems quite harsh to give no warning first. Especially as they see me as an ally.

Damn, these space stations are stricter than my old school headmaster ;)

A while ago I took a bit longer than usual clearing the slot because I decided to proceed behind a couple of NPCs instead of threading myself through the slot next to them (or just waiting inside the station until they were gone) as I usually do. I definitely wasn't in the slot for a full ten seconds, more like five or six, until I got a fine of a couple of hundred credits for blocking the entrance. The station didn't fire at me though. I could imagine they start firing if you don't clear after getting the fine, but you should've seen the fine message pop up before that happens.

I always target stuff when docking/launching, I press the target ahead button in case there's something big outside the letter box that you can't always see. I also do it when leaving to see what is coming in and to work out if we can pass side by side (i.e if a Type 9 is coming in I hold back until it's in). Never had an issue with the station. I've not used my KWS within the no fire zone though.

This is what I got some time ago while scanning near-station (cannot remember if cargo or KWS, KWS AFAIR).
