So......um......what now?

I am stuck and dont really know how to proceed. Basically my goals are quiet simple, get ship, upgrade it, have fun with it, earn credits, get a better one. And that has held me over quiet well, till now. You see I have a Viper and I am very happy with it and wont part with it. Its a fun ship, and tough to boot.

Now the next combat ships "up" from here are the Cobra and then the Asp. So I had a cobra for a week or so, before deciding that I really didnt like it that much. Its not so great in combat due to weak shielding compared to the Viper and its lower hardpoints being so far back and spread as far apart. So I sold it and was happy to get the credits back. I saved up some more creds and for the last few days I have been working towards an Asp. Now I am not one of these "heavy traders". I trade a little, and bounty hunt a bit to make creds. But the trading bit is rather boring to me as its just back and forth, back and forth. And the bounty hunting, while fun, does not pay as well and gets a little annoying when your constantly "buzzed" by local LEO's and cant fire half the time or risk a bounty.

So I got my Asp yesterday and I was all happy....for all of an hour. I upgraded the ship (naturally I had extra capital on top of ship price) with some nice bits and took it out for a spin. I hated it. Sound effects for it are horrible, it has a lot of inertia drift due to its mass, has a horrible cockpit design and placement, and is just generally "nasty" feeling IN MY OPINION.

And then I realised. There is NOTHING ELSE. Nothing in the 1-50 million price range at all other than a Type-6 and the Asp. I dont want to be a trader, I only do it sparingly so the Type-6 is out. So now I no idea what I am going to do to earn another...what 80million or so to get a Python with some decent internals? I have about 8 million creds now, not a lot I know. But there is zero for me to spend it on other than insurance. My Viper is "done" as far as spending on it goes.

Why is there no ships for combat other than this stupid Asp? Who thought it was a good idea to create such a huge gap in the cost between combat ships?

Anyhoo. Yeah Im a bit glum, so what the hell do I do now? Is my only option to "grind" trading and/or bounty hunting? What would I do once I do get enough credits for the ship though? Its not like I get enough payouts now to pay for it any time soon, how could I run it in combat with these low bounty rewards?

I am at a loss.

Take that asp and explore the crap out of the galaxy? Take that viper and play the storyline as much as you can? All stuff you probably already know...

Personally I love the Cobra and Asp. The Asp sounds wonderful to me, and I like the drifty nature of it. Both are food in combat once you learn to live with the hardpoint positions, and both are good at exploration and trading as well. They are jack of all trades, master of none.

But it sounds like trading and heavy ships aren't for you. And that's cool. Elite isn't about having the biggest ships or the most money, it's about making it what you want it to be. If you like the Viper, and you like bounty hunting, then stick with it. You'll make enough money to more than cover your costs, and upgrade. Why chase something that you might not like - maybe you'd hate a Python anyway (running costs are a wee bit high).

If you decide to stick with the Viper and still feel at a loss, then you might just need a break. And that's cool too. Or you could decide to try and change system alignments, or go to popular systems and protect the innocent for pirates - not always much of an earner, but it might make the game fulfilling.

Most of us want money and bigger ships. Only a few get there, and even fewer stick with them because the smaller ships are actually more fun and aren't such a problem when you lose them.

I hope you find something to do; something to aim for that doesn't involve steps you really don't like. Maybe in a few months there will be more things to do and more intermediate ships to aspire to. But it does sound as though your stated goals don't match up with what you actually enjoy.

I felt the same a bit when I got my Asp totally maxed. Then I started using ED as a tool rather than just trying to consume it.
I just use ED as a jumping off point for my imagination now I have the tools to do it. I can trade, or travel, or get a Viper and fight.
But the reasons to do that I make up myself. I am glad the game give me the room to do that too. That is why sandboxes are good. A bit like the original. A marvelous scaffold for the imagination but without stuff jumping in the picture spoiling my inner narrative. I do think FD are getting the balance right. I hope they are doing it intentionally so that when new content comes it enriches the galaxy rather than just clutters it up...

The Viper is great, is just crippled for range with an S2 fuel tank. So exploration with it is out of the question. And I REALLY do not like the Asp enough to buy another one, since I sold it to get the credits back. Kinda feel painted in to a corner here by Frontier.

This is the exact reason I've shelved the game. I sincerely enjoy it, but it's still missing so much. I, like you, enjoy acquiring new ships and modifying them. However, as it is now, if I was to build up the capital to fly a python (or even a dropship or clipper) when the rest of the ships come out, I'm sure I'd be way past the point of having any practical use for them other than collecting them. I'd prefer to use them to progress instead of just gathering dust in my hanger.

I'll play it from time to time, but I doubt I seriously pick it up again until it's a lot closer to their original release vision.

Wait for the faction mechanics to get sorted (should be announced in a day or two) and start influencing the politics of the galaxy.

Meantime, you should have more than enough cash to get a hauler and all the components you need to do a little exploring. Check out some of the exploring threads. You can make a steady 200-300K/h which ain't bad. I'm heading out towards the centre of the galaxy just now and will come back when the faction stuff is sorted, to help the Dukes of Mikunn.

More ships are coming. Have some fun with your Viper, saving up credits for when you are able to get them.

I have a feeling you'd like the Python though.

Can you expand a little on how you managed to get the cash for an ASP when you only 'trade a little'. a kitted out viper then ASP must cost a fair bit and i dont see how you can dabble in this game and get enough credits to pay for an ASP, AND upgrade it.
whats the secret?

Extraction zones. Its the only "viable" way I have found to earn creds via bounty hunting.
And the occasional rare trade run when I had my Cobra. If I was to go all "Del Boy" I could make millions just shuttling rares around for days. But as I said that just not my cuppa tea at all really.

I have evolved into a Smuggler. I have a decent Cobra, and I found a few local Outposts with Black Markets. I take the "Retrieve X ITems from space" missions. While I drop into U.S.S.'s I can find Bounties to collect, Random items to sell, and the mission items I'm hunting for. Add a "Kill X number of Pirate" missions and I have a nights worth of gaming.

This may not be everyone's idea of fun in this game, but I am happy and well fed. Have look into it. I had a 8 space cargo rack in my Viper to do this in, it was more than enough.

Another bit of advice I would offer is: get an Eagle. Those things are fun to fly and cheap to operate. I am fearless with the thing because the insurance is so low. Two Pulse Lasers and a Cannon.... watch out criminals. A chuckle inducing way to mix things up.

Good luck

I might try this. I have been using a Viper for this purpose but those things shields are just too impregnable. There is no sense of risk. Never really tried the Eagle yet.

Don't forget to hit LHS 3447, 10% off. I gobbled up a bunch of internals recently.

Had an eagle when I started, I traded that sidewinder in for it. It was nice to fly, just extremely fragile in combat.

Thanks for all the suggestions people I do appreciate it. Still really know what to do though.

Asp makes a great trader if you rip some internals out. Crazy jump range gives you direct access to routes that other people have to sweat for. Horrible cockpit design...you're kidding, right? :D
