Has Ironman been scrapped?

I refer to the mode described here:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=90464#post90464

Ironman Elite
During commander creation the player may set the "ironman" flag. Ironman commanders can never be grouped with normal commanders. Players can use the same name for both normal and ironman commanders.

  • Escape pod systems can be damaged and made inoperable (they are still invincible once launched)
  • Escape pods are disposable: after use, a new pod can be purchased
  • Escape pods must be manually activated
  • Failure to use an escape pod permanently kills the commander if the ship suffers catastrophic hull damage (breaks apart)
    • Permanently killed commanders can be resurrected as a normal commander (no ironman flag), continuing from when they died
    • Ship warning systems and visual/aural cues activate when the ship nears total operational failure
    • The commander is not killed by any amount of ship operational failure
  • Commanders have emergency personal life support which activates in the event of life support failure
    • Personal life support can only sustain a commander for a limited time, but restocks when the commander is in a breathable atmosphere
    • If a commander's personal life support runs out the commander is permanently killed

I have been searching and not found any information for the status of this, does anyone else know the status of it? Hell, I would even settle for a single life/death = restart mode as this is what I play like anyway.

This was my most looked forward to feature of the game.
I asked FD about it after wings was announced. The response to my query is that Iron-man is not planned for the near future.
I guess there are things higher up the list. Maybe pre-requisites too. All they need to implement it is Grouping (done) Escape capsules (not done) and multiple commanders (not done).
I expect it to come in the future. So much effort was put in to getting the proposal into it's final form, also the devs expressed a lot of enthusiasm for it as well as a lot of the community. Just be patient.
In the mean time - we cannot die.

Michael Brookes recently stated that it's not a priority atm - well - at least that doesn't mean it's completely off the table.

Really looking forward to it, but the game imho needs multiple save slots and needs to be rock stable as well as bug free before it's implemented imho. Losing an IM character to a glitch would really be a major PITA, so I'm okay with waiting.

Oh don't get me wrong I don't mind the wait I just don't like being left in the dark. Ideally and I know why they don't, I would like to see some form of roadmap or weekly updates, not game updates per se, just a "Hey this is what we are working on". Just to keep people like myself feel a little more in the loop.

I'm craving the Ironman mode too.
In the meantime, play without using the insurance feature. If you lose the ship you're flying, select the free Sidewinder instead of the insured replacement. It certainly spices up the game!

Didn't know about such a feature. Well, this sounds like fun. I wonder would we be able to upgrade existing characters to ironman and start from there or we'll have to start anew.

I tried doing this. I wiped my gamma save for release.
I think for me I am just going to accept that I am an immortal in a universe full of immortals, until Iron-man is implemented.
It isn't so much about the money it is more about the rank. I am already competent in combat and I haven't done that much fighting, I have had two "insurance claims". It is absolutely impossible for me to die. There is no way I can lose my rank and my bank balance is safe unless I wipe my save. I cannot even commit suicide as if I do I will just end up in a station alive and well, rank and bank balance unaffected.
So I just accept that at the moment my Commander lives in a universe of immortals and ignore the fact that everyone will soon be Elite.
And wait for Iron-man.

I'm already playing this way, only without all the cool escape pod mechanics.

If my ship gets blown up I reset my save, even if it is through self destruct due to no fuel.

Ironman mode does sound fun, but the way this community reacts to loss I highly doubt we will ever see it in game. More likely to see Carebear Mode first.

I thought that, but when the huge forum debates were happening a year ago about this, once people got how much of a different galaxy it would be (for those in the Iron-Man group) if everybody stood to lose everything and getting to Elite was not inevitable, a lot of people were into it, but most wanted a feature where you can move to normal mode if you die, so that was included.
Also the idea of actually being able to die a heroic death appealed to more players than you might think.
It will come.
:)

The problem with Iron Man is the same problem with Solo Vs. Open. It doesn't really mean anything if you can switch modes or abuse game mechanics such as disconnecting when you start to lose a fight. Until FD comes up with a solid solution for major exploits then Iron Man won't mean anything.
