Docking Pad Number Madness

I have been trying to figure out if there is any logic at all to the way docking pads are numbered in the big space stations and frankly I'm stumped. You'd think the big numbers would be at the back or something. Can anybody shed any light on this ?

The little blue dot in compass points you to it. Once you suss that docking becomes a doddle. Honestly. Follow the blue (or white) dot on the compass.

Watch your compass, it'll point to the right docking pad as soon as you clear the millslot.
problem not with finding the pad, but with understanding the logic behind pad numbers...

i was thinking about it too. seems there is not much logic. seems like pad numbers were assigned randomly, and then copied to all stations.

The "01" pad starts very strangely, smack dab in the middle of the station approximately halfway between the entrance and the rear wall. Then the numbers increase towards towards the front eg 02, 03 etc. When the pad at the front is "03" for example (which is true btw), the next pad "04" will be right at the back all the way at the rear wall, one "lane" over.

So the numbers keep increasing this way until all the pads are numbered :)

Yeah there was a thread somewhere back in Beta where someone actually DREW the whole floorplan out, but I can't find it now.

Yeah, that's crazy. I can't understand it.
It would have made more sense for there to be a way to work out the rough location of the pad from the number.

Except when you come barrelling in at high speed and you find you've been given a pad right at the door grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ignore the numbers. Fly in straight and level. Look at the landing radar display on the left. (big circle with a dot in it). Position the dot at 6 O'clock on the big circle. Lower yourself onto the pad. By far the easiest way when you get the hand of it and even the really awkward pads become a doddle.

What I would have done:

The pads could be considered to be in a series of rings. The rings could have the same number of pads as each other, say five. There could be ten rings as we move into the station from the docking slot. Pads on the first ring would be 1-5, second ring 6-10, etc etc, thus giving you a method of working out where the pad is in terms of distance from the entrance.

Thats it, dont know if it will make any sense though...

Thanks, that kind of reinforces my point that there is no logic to it ! :)

Looks logical enoough to me. Bear in mind as you fly in to the station you go from bottom to top as you are looking at the image, so the numbers go up sequentially (with a few exceptions).

I guess someone put 'unlucky' 13 right under the entrance as a bit of a joke, or perhaps there is some space lore for it?

The only other anomaly is that that 31-34 are the wrong way around; not sure if it's the image at fault or if it's really the design of the station.

I got 13 while I was silent running to avoid a scan. Scraped the bottom of my ship so hard on the platform under the mail slot that I took my hull down to 1%.

I don't know whether to call that lucky (that I survived) or unlucky that I got the hardest slot to park in while running like that. :D

I mean really i do not have any hope for humanity if you have not got i sussed out after around 20 docking i fear for you it truly is that simple

Number in front. Always works. Blast shield behind (as it is for the thruster heat). I never come in the wrong way keeping the number in front of me. No madness at all.

I noticed that too.

they should index them by station depth, first level when you go in (closest to the entrance), level 0 (pads 1,2,3 ... ), next level 1 (pads [1]1,[1]2,[1]3 ...). This way you'll surely know if you have to go further in or slow down right at the entrance.

Right now I'm using the blue dot compass thingy, but it's not perfect since it's only working after you get into the station, so if you're coming in hot, if the pad is right at the beginning, you'll mostly go past it and have to rotate/go back/whatever.
