Flying between systems... is kind of possible

Was out exploring, and found two systems a mere 2,500,000 LS from each other.

Well, i thought, that's certainly flyable. So off i went to see if its possible.

The upshot is well, not really. You can fly the distance, and you can get to the point where the system should be, but there is nothing there, just the nav marker on your hud.

So basically, its confirmed, the systems are isolated as instances and so the FSD jump is in a way a loading screen.

No screenshots at the moment, I did take, and ill be releasing them in a few days or so when i get back to civilized space and write the story of my journey.

That's a shame :(

Wonder if it's something FDev are working on...?
Rewrite of the engine i guess? The space isnt "there" in its entire shape. Its instances you "load" in between. Nice solution that let you have enormous amount of instances, but can feel a little sad when 2 systems are close by and you cant SC between them. However im not fussed. I think its working good. I guess if FD did it differently where you had missions etc that were close to another system then you would see this "issue" more. But since you rather jump to get there faster its not really an issue. Sure it would be cool if you could SC everywhere, but i think that means to change the engine quite a bit. I might be wrong.

Did the galaxy map update your position and shows you "between" star systems? (just wondering)

(and: The place between stars was a sure meeting point for thargoids in the old days, met any?)

To be honest I really don't see this as an issue really, it was always the way with other Elite games too. I'd rather the devs spent their time adding more content than changing this to be able to SC between systems.

Apparently it used to work, back in the betas, but around the time fuel was introduced it got "broken" and nobody has bothered to fix it.
.
In one of the betas, it "should" have been possible to escape the artificial wall that prevented you straying too far from certain systems, I think someone managed to fly to Sol in supercruise, but nothing was there.
.
I think it should be added back in, personally. Now there is no wall any more, you should be able to supercruise to wherever your ship is capable of taking you. The only argument against this is that you could sneak into "permit only" systems this way, but then if you do the authorities should just shoot you down anyway. Docking request denied - no permit.

It could be done so that the new instance is loaded in smaller chunks while you fly towards the destination system. Might cause some stutters in the meantime, but stutters happen anyway. :) Might be too much work on the coding side of things for such a small feature, at least for the time being. One can only but hope. :)

It wouldn't really make sense to expend the time or resources to load up systems that are inaccessible for all intents and purposes.

Yeah, the price of the heavily fragmented instancing...

But IMHO it should be easily possible to "silent hyperjump" folks into another System after crossing a 50% rubicon, not much unlike the normal instance migration you commonly see when in SuperCruise.

Only instead of "12 contacts lost - 9 new contacts" - you'd basically lose the old System from the NAV computer and those of the new System would appear.
Exactly! :)

For me, it sounds like the argument FOR it!

Imagine the possibilities, from ultra-profitable smuggling to some backwards outpost in restricted system, to some kind of VIP assassinations. That would require some mechanics of locking down, quarantining etc. for systems, and a bit more work on economy and missions... but it sounds really fun.

No. As far as the game is concerned you are still in the original system.

I think FD has already said it doesn't work by design (wasn't worth the Dev effort for the one occasion the very few people who will actually bother to do it).

Apart from the novelty it doesn't serve any purpose.
