Newcomer / Intro warzones - how to make money?

I just did my first visit to a combat zone, in LTT 700 or something, near sugrivik. I had a mission to kill 8 ships in a warzone there. However there was no indication which side I was supposed to kill. To add to my confusion, when I enter the warzone there are only imperial ships shooting at other imperial ships in one huge mess with no way to tell the sides apart. After some thinking I just started shooting one enemy, half the ships turn hostile and a hilarious battle ensues. I kill an asp, and flee in order to repair my damage and stuff. But apparently I didn't get any combat bonds (at least I could cash in at the nearest station), and killing 8 ships in such a high risk environment for just 30 grand or something seem grossly underpaid. Any hints? Or maybe an explanation why nobody seems to care about sides most of the time?

You need to choose a side to support. On right computer, one of the options is to choose a faction to support

* edit
you choose the side to support when you arrive at the war zone

Right now forget Conflict Zones for money making. Just do something else like bounty hunting. The combat bonds you get don't change for ship sizes. You can kill an enemy Eagle, get 3k credits reward, kill an Anaconda or a Python, still get 3k credits. Only if you manage to critically damage all of an enemy capital ship's heat relays and force it to jump out, you get a measly 50k credits. Even if I go on a killing spree in my Python in a conflict zone, I could have made more than 5 times that money at a nav beacon or RES.

I think i figured it out now. Money was bad, indeed. The function to choose your faction on the right computer is pretty hidden, too. But I finished my indiscriminate 8 kill mission, so no bad rep for me. I also figured out why there were only imperial ships fighting. Apparently there are two imperial factions fighting for dominance, but both have only low influence (around 7% each). The controlling faction in LTT 700 are independent democrats at over 50% influence. I recon war is not good for moneymaking. But I think you gain reputation rather rapidly, so if you want to be friends with someone, fighting for him in a war might be was to go.

So I'm better off just doing those 180k bounty board Elite Anacondas

If you have the ship for it that is. They can be a tough nut to crack, even for big ships and experienced pilots.

I meant something more like the "Kill Pirates" mission or just the regular bounty hunting, as I already said

Those warzone missions are odd, you go there and you bring up the right hand panel to choose a faction, but there is only one choice ( probably because that's the faction you took the mission for ) , so you shoose that faction and half the ships turn green, then you shoot the yellow ones as they are not on the same side as you, pick on the small eagles for quick completion of the mission. You can damage your rep in other systems doing these though, but you should rep up in the one you do the missions for so make sure you want to rep up with those guys and not the others ;)

haha i done my first warzone and as the op i got there and didnt know whose side i was on, nor did i know about the rh panel bit, so i just shot at a big ship but after fighting for a few seconds realised that eveybody in the war zone was my enemy, or red on the scanner so after taking 50% hull damage i just done a runner and abandoned the mission bad rep for me and deservedly so as i didnt know what to do when i got there, did i attack the feds or the defence force? but now i know better all part of the learning curve :- )

Warzones are good fun and they are fine if you want to feel part of something and possibly "make difference" (note - difference is made more easily is you have "brought friends" :) )
However money are bad. If you have bigger ship with more firepower, always equip energy weapons, because otherwise money barely cover the ammunition. And it also forces you to pick on smaller targets, because money are the same. I have made quite a gunship out of my ASP, but if I see a Python, Dropship, or Annie, I don't bother. It's a minute of work in which I could obliterate six Eagles...

Especially those little interceptor ships like the F63 Condor. They explode almost instantly and are actually worth the money to kill them. Shame there are so little of these tiny buggers flying around at the conflict zones

Word. If a conflict zone would consist of nothing but Condors/Imperial Fighters, Eagles and Sidewinders flying around fighting each other, the 3000 cr per kill would actually make sense. But I ain't gonna fight Anacondas, Pythons, Cobras and Asps for that kind of money. I think FD need o seriously balance those warzones better.

I fondly remember the Federal Distress Signal in Eranin where the Sidewinders were the System Defense Vessels and the damaged battlecruiser with its Condors and its Eagle escort was the aggressor. I want those kind of conflict zones back.

They would also be perfect for starters in Sidewinders. When you are just starting out in your beginner ship, 3000 cr per kill are an insane amount of money. And the risk from Eagles and Condors is still enough to balance it out. Not to mention the cannons of the battlecruiser they are escorting....

Early days for the devs I guess but there's a lot of potential to these types of scenarios. Imagine something like a death star run type of scenario. The possibilities for these are astronomical (pun intended).

I dropped into one of these the other night for the first time. Quite a spectacle. I was confused too when I was there as all the ships seems to be from the same faction and all were "clean" so I didn't want to shoot any for fear of becoming wanted. I just parked up and enjoyed the show for a while until a few ships got too close to me (within metres...) and I decided I better be off...
