What do you do when another player turns up in your home system?

If I'm in my private group, I say, "Hi...how're doing!" If I'm playing solo and someone suddenly appeared, I'd say, "How the heck did you get into my game????? You one of those internet gurus or something?" :) Seriously, there does appear to be a need for some work to improve player interactions through chat etc. Sounds to me like you've got some good ideas on where to proceed. When Wings comes out, that might open up more possibilities for you.

This.

Anyone with the nous to be trading outside populated (and therefore "Slopey'd") space is probably going to have the funds to buy "something for the weekend" if you decide to get violent, or even just if you get lippy.

Where I'm based there's probably three of us running similar runs, I was the second arrival. Two Type 9's (one being me) and an Anaconda (presumably trade fit). I wouldn't want to start a turf war with either of them, if they are anything like me then they'll have a second combat fit ship nearby. I know I have a war-Python, I dread to think what they've got...

They were in a well armed trading Type-7 vs my brand new trading Python (was in Clipper last time we meet). Good chance they have a combat Viper hidden away as well or could even be in a Python next time I see them. They were making good money yesterday, easy 3 Million CR / hour in a Type-7.

All out war could be fun, but then home might never be the same again.

I don't think this has been mentioned before (I had a quick look at the conversation)... why not just go solo for a few days? Check back occassionally to see if they've gone away.

As Gorodd says - if your sector is that obscure/distant (albeit your home) the thing most likely to make them dig in their heals is something potentially interesting i.e. stimulus (assuming they're that way inclined).

PS just thought of the nightmare scenario; you blow them up/they blow you up: they/you come back full of vengeance, same again: they come back with friends: you come back with friends: minor local conflict hits forum/GalNet: more join in for the aggro/sport/sightseeing: conflict begins to warp local economy affecting human and AI behaviour: minor, then major factions join in: all out war: you end up as far from the quiet backwater you wanted as could possibly be imagined.

I think the issue here is that the OP wants the 'visitor' to stop messing with the system. Passive responses are not going to achieve this goal.
.
Unfortunately with FD taking the decision to share the economy model across Solo, Private and Open play anyone can trade anywhere and no player/blockade can do anything about it.
.
Personally I would prefer a solution whereby if a player can have an affect on my game then I can 'choose' to have an affect on his too :D
Of course if he comes back with all his mates then I have brought it upon myself!

Well if the OP was actually up for aggro, he'd have done it by now rather than soul searching on the forum...

Otherwise I'd have just said "let loose the Pythons of war!!!!"

I send a brief but polite message ie "Look at me when I scream at your soul! You loud sacks of filth and sour cream can hit me with your pain pinatas all day~ But you'll never take away the jellied fantasies of my wasted youth! My stomach is clear, and my mind is full of bacon!"

You sir, have a decidedly bizarre and freshly creative point of view. Rep +1.

Explain to me again how you came to own this system and stake out the bit you call "my territory"?

I don't claim to own the system, but it been the first place I settled in after launch and having spent much time here it is the place I call home that I always come back to.

Since launch I have only seen 4 other cmdr's pass though the area, I've been alone out here for so long I now feel quite territorial when another Cmdr turns up. Not saying I wish they never came, to be honest it's added a interesting new dynamic to my game.

Seriously though, if you jump into a system and try to send a message it takes too long to do the steps to send it.

1. You send a message, it gets to them as they drop to a station.
2. You send a message as they jump out of a station.
3. You send a message in a combat zone and they die trying to respond.
4. You try to send a message in a combat zone and die while trying to send it.
5. You send a message to someone with a rift...

He was the first player to come to the system repeatedly. :)

To answer the thread question:
I assess my risk of bringing the player's attention to me:
- Is dude in a smaller ship than mine? Say "Greetings Cmdr" as gesture of saying I'm cool don't worry about me.
- Is dude in a bigger ship than mine? Say nothing and hope they don't notice me on their radar and keep my distance from them.

If a player enters the area of space where I am hunting for bounties, I will put full pips to shields and ram them till they either explode or take the hint. I am the Sovereign of my space :)

What do you do when another player turns up in your home system?

So wanting to avoid PVP on launch I headed to a remote border system that I now call home. I’ve had various walkabouts throughout populated space and some long range exploration but always glad to make it back home to familiar space.

I've have had a few encounters with other cmdr’s passing through my territory. Normally send them a friendly greeting and take a note of their name encase I see them around again. A few ended up in my friends list. Just recently another cmdr started grinding the ‘seeking luxuries’ in my home system (sure it was down to all my work that it’s in boom now?), having a significant negative effect on the market prices.

Started out usual friendly towards them but not much interaction back. Then when they cut me up while I was docking, I confess I rammed them in a fit of space rage (probably hurt me more than them and felt ashamed afterwards).

So now I’m left wondering what I want out of such player interactions:
- Maybe we could be friends and co-operate on stuff together (not sure what?)
- I could harass them until they leave the system (don’t think I’m really that type of player)
- I could try out a spot of piracy on them (not nice, but want to do a bit of everything at some point)
- Could just ignore each other as though they are another npc (while they mess up the market and steal my missions)
- I could go off and do some more exploring and see if they are still around when I get back.

Are missions shared? because the number available has dropped right down since the boom started and they showed up.

Commander, you know what you have to do.

Take him/her out of the equation with extreme prejudice, and keeping hitting them until they get the message and leave the system (or have no insurance money left). There are 400 billion systems out there, so why has this cmdr decided to set up shop in your backyard.

The only mistake you've made so far is allowing him to settle in and build up rep with the local factions. He'll probably invite his friends around for a party and destroy the trade in the area. Strike now while the iron hot, and save enough for paying off your bounty. The trade war has already started, it's time to get serious and fast :)

I ignore them unless being hailed. It's just a stranger passing by, so why bother?

Wow. Mr. Life-of-the-Party.

I usually hail them and say "Greetings Pilot" or "Safe Travels"
Sometimes they respond in same but mostly ignore me. Never do they ask "How are you" or "What's happening around here?"

Kind of sad coming from Jumpgate and Freelancer where there was Waay more interaction among pilots.

Home system, pfft. Home is where I park when I log off. Just keep flying and exploring.

And a friendly Good Day Cmdr never goes amiss, not that anyone has ever replied!
