Thrustmaster Warthog - Cant assign Yaw controls.

I finally got my hands on a Warthog joystick at the weekend and have been spending some time trying to set it up with some kind of sensible layout, but I've been having some issue getting it to bend to my will! First a bit of background as to what I've done.

I initially plugged it in and fired up ED and in the controls section ED automatically gave me an option to select the Warthog as a control device, which i did but obviously nothing worked! I then downloaded the latest drivers and TARGET software (what a PoS that is!) and a game layout for ED. Flashed the firmware on both of the units and loaded the game profile and then fired up ED. That sort of worked, (though was surprised that the controls are set for keyboard /mouse rather than joystick but go on it's working) other than the Roll/Pitch and throttle axes weren't setup properly but managed to deal with that OK.

Now to my problem. I dont have rudder pedals, (and don't intend shelling out another 100 quid for them) so wanted to use the thumb hat on the side of the throttle (MSL I think) to control rudder. No problem i thought, so bound MSL Forward to Yaw Left (A key) and MSL Back to Yaw right (D key), all layers are checked, and saved the profile.

When I run up the profile and check the key bindings in the tool the control maps to the keys a bound. All good. In ED Yaw controls are set to keys A and D, but when i try the controls in the game I get ...... Nada!

I've clearly missed something but I've no idea what.

I had a similar issue on with my Warthog, try pushing the UI focus button and see if it fixes is. If a hat is configured to both browsing UI elements and yaw you have to clear UI focus to free it up for yaw action. Also if you don't run TARGET at all the game will recognize your Warthog and evens offers a default profile for it which you can customize further and you don't have to mess with TARGET and the keyboard nonsense at all. This means you can't use the advanced scripting stuff from TARGET though.

I still recommend the rudder pedals, analog yaw control is very useful.

Not sure why you have the problem, I only have the stick and not the throttle I bound my controls directly without assigning shortcuts in target....
A tip on yaw, I was missing the twist yaw on my old stick and having real problems getting on tartget in combat using a hat to yaw. I had a mad idea and remapped yaw onto the x axis and switched roll onto keys, made a heck of a difference, at least for me.

Most likely what kwarrio said, but I'd generally avoid binds overlapping between in-cockpit UI controls and direct ship controls - especially when using head tracking, I'd say it is bound to lead to some weird misfire at some point.

I've really grown to like TARGET once I've gotten used to it - couldn't imagine to do without it nowadays. And I'd also recommend getting pedals.

That's a good point I had overlooked that the A/D keys were also used for UI navigation. I think I'll ry assigning a couple of random keys for Yaw and mapping the thumb hat to that to see if it solves my issue.

I hear what you, and Captain Kirk, are saying about rudder pedals, but as I've already spent 100 quid more than i had anticipated with upgrading form a X55 to Warthog joystick i'm not keen on spending more on another bit of hardware to play a game. I did find myself looking at a trio of Dell 24" 4k monitors until i realized i'd also have to get three video cards to drive them!

Talk about money pit!

I spent around 900€ on various system upgrades and peripherals to get ready for Elite Dangerous so I fully understand. Still I found it easier to get used to hunger than to the idea of a suboptimal Elite experience but your mileage may vary.

If I was at home more, (work away during the week), i might consider spending the green to get a more immersive experience but as a casual player it's hard to justify, even though i just dropped £250 on a joystick!

Had another go at assigning yaw control to the thumb hat on the throttle by assigning MSL and MSR to keys 7 and 8 and then setting Yaw control to these keys in the game, but to no avail. Anybody got any further ideas?

Do you have them bound to any other function than that? Is the script running?

Sorry for asking dumb questions, but the way you describe it, it should definitely work - so there must be something glaring missing.

On a side note, I'd just assign yaw to the throttles slew controls x axis if I had no pedals - allows for some analogue input and translates better to left/right yaw than the mic switch due to its orientation towards the longitudinal flight axis.

Get foot pedals. I have the warthog setup along with foot pedals. I customized the built in settings that came with ED. Docking is a breeze along with using fixed weapons. I like to keep things simple.

I dont use TARGET ( hate that program) and I dont use the warthog profile in ED (just didn't work for me and I couldn't change anything)
I'm using the custom profile and assigned everything to my own liking, including the yaw. I had it set to the warthog TMS switch.

Finally got my pedals back and that's so much better then using a button xD I would recommend getting a good set of rudder pedals.

hi

actuall i used the slew control on the throttle for the yaw,it does have 2 axis (see the Thrustmaster profile here: http://ts.thrustmaster.com/fr/index.php?pg=view_files&gid=1&fid=3&pid=311&cid=12), it does explain how to setup the axis too.

as for MSLF and MSLB, did you set them to "hold" instead of "pulse"? i not, then it does just pulse a/d !

Nope those keys aren't bound to anything else as far as i am aware off.

Thanks for the link to the profile, i've already downloaded that, and am using it as my basis for TARGET. I can't check at the moment whether it's set to pulse or hold, but given that I've seen my hologram "twitch" but with no ship movement this might be the cause.

What do you guys mean by slew control on the throttle?

I've clearly missed something but I've no idea what.

The default type of input is Pulse which is a 30ms entry of the key

You must set the TYPE field it to Hold to be able to yaw with those keys

You can alternatively use the in-game mechanism yaw into roll with a low threshold, it is kinda working too to control yaw and roll with the right/left axis of the stick

Spot on. I had it set to Pulse rather than Hold. All working now.

Thanks..
