So are the Americans the Feds and the Brits the Empire?

Even though the Emperor was quoted as saying someone "couldn't find their bum with both hands" (.....*exasperatedsigh*). I refuse to think of them as anything other than the Roman Empire reborn. There is no contemporary equivalent. Also, reading about the Fed Shadow President and seeing the military defying the president, it's not very American.

Is it ok to say that these aren't parallels to our modern governments? Is there a reason why we have to attach them to current events? I'm against it.

I think a more accurate representation would be to equate the Feds to a futuristic United Nations and The Empire to a futuristic Roman Empire.

Well, given the influence corporations have within the Fed faction, it would appear to mirror quite well the state of the current US. Certainly the Conservative side of the US. Liberals/Progressives would fall under another faction I would think.

The Empire has elements of the British Empire. Wiping out indigenous life forms, profiting from the slave trade, crushing local rebellions. As a nostalgic Brit it makes me feel all warm inside. The Clipper even has its steering wheel on the correct side :)

I always thought the Feds were Space Americans, if only because the Dropship is large, boxy and notably inferior to its Imperial counterpart.

Never visited the Alliance. They sound like a bunch of tree-hugging space hippies. I wouldn't invite them over for Tea.

While i'm glad you're a space bro, the Clipper has some serious combat issues. Primarily hardpoints, then the fact it has no mass.

Empire appear oriental to me. The female voice announcer in the station has a Japanese accent and is very deferential, as you might expect from the Japanese. The music also has an oriental sound

As someone living in Japan for the last 10 years, I just facedesked.

I thought she sounded Scandinavian (awaiting scorn from Scandy residents)

There are different station announcers for different Imperial stations, occasionally (or often) speaking different languages. I've heard what I think is a Chinese one and a German in some stations.

If you have read John 'Pasha' Glubb; or Igor Shafarevich, then you will appreciate that 'empires' come and go with an uncanny regularity.

It follows, therefore, that any dichotomy of political style, must come from the 'human' make-up, and not mere 'nationality'. For my part, I think there is more to gain by looking at the English civil war; the difference between the 'Roundhead' mentality, and the 'Cavalier'. Roundheads, under Cromwell, wanted a centralised 'socialist' system; whereas the Cavaliers were more 'status' driven individuals. Possibly the difference between left and right cerebral dominances; check out Iain McGilchrist's work.
