General / Off-Topic Grand Theft Auto 5

My last foray into GTA was GTA San Andreas although I only played a few missions on it, I got bored quickly. The one I love was Vice City. Have not played any new ones since SA. I checked what was needed got GTA IV and thought no thanks....although I understand PC GTA IV was quite bad so I'm not missing out on anything apparentl ;)

I have to say that the pc port of gta iv runs shockingly badly on my pc, which runs more modern games (eg bioshock infinite, witcher 2, dishonored, far cry 3)very well. I am a bit worried that the port for v will be shoddy too.

You can't possibly say that gta sa is better without playing v. Technically v knocks sa out of the park; I've not played long enough to compare the stories, but I am really enjoying the three arcs: it allows rockstargames to tell stories that wouldn't be possible for one main character.

I will probably pick up gta v on pc in the inevitable steam sale, but I am glad I bought it on console now.

You are right, the PC port of GTA V will be bad, because Rockstar, while they must make this game on PC (tell me they make it on an XBox ... go on) somehow manage to make it run perfect on a console, yet horrible on PC. How? How is that possible? The only answer I can think of is they deliberately screw the PC gamer.

And again you are right, I haven't played GTA V yet, and I have no doubt it is mind blowing. I honestly would love to play it, and the online world that's in the works, hang on while I rush out and buy the PC version .... oh wait, that's right ... there isn't a PC version ... yet.

I'd like to get someone from Rockstar to tell me why they insist on screwing the PC owner, but I know they'd never answer that question to the likes of lil ole me.

I thought your link would take me to an article about how the PC version would not be crap unlike PC versions of GTA SA and GTA IV

Heheh can't answer that one with a link, still if they've got PC code in there the thing must be setup for a PC version. Also, what issues did you have with the past PC versions? I have them, I didn't really notice any problems. :)

You may not notice problems now, but when I first had GTA SA on PC it didn't play very smoothly. It wasn't until I bought the PC I have now, did it play as it should have done to begin with, and I waited two years for that.

Then I bought GTA IV on release. My PC (the one I still have now) met the requirements to play it. It installed. I had to look up ONLINE how to adjust the settings to get the best possible results to play it. It still didn't play smoothly, I think the best I managed was a framerate of 1 frame every 10 seconds. I also had to be logged in to Microsoft's online thingamy to be able to save ... logged in online to save my game in an OFFLINE single player game? what? Seriously ... GTA IV was a horrendous PC version ... yet, strangely, none of this applied to the console versions ... and don't get me started on the XBox vs PS2 / 3 version.

It is all summed up by one simple statement - Rockstar screw PC owners.

I take it that your PC was as high or higher performance than either console? You weren't trying to run it with the minimum requirements?

I've never played any of the GTA games... But I've lately become intrigued by them...

I read in the press that GTA V is not really great. They say it is always the same. The graphics are from another time. Finally the game is not at the height of its reputation. Even if it has already raised more than U.S. $ 1 billion

My PC is as good as a PS2 ... by today's standards, it's not that high a PC, but was a high spec PC when I bought it

Critics don't know everything(there are a few good ones) however i take critics reviews with a pinch of salt.

How many have given Games, films, even music and books bad press, only having to eat their own words later when the product gets great sales or brilliant reviews from the general public.......word of mouth between friends/social networks/forums helps push reputations/sales

Even the ED forum will be a place for newbies to check out what the player base is saying about ED when game is released, i always check buyers reviews on a product i am thinking of buying.

and not at its height for reputation? apart from some side issues for some regarding loading disks(not me) the reviews from most players are that its at its best ever! ive only had it a couple of days and its outstanding in game-play/graphics etc, and ive barely scratched the surface!

Have you played it yourself? :)

Got to agree with this, I was messing with it last night on the PS3. The thing thats shocked me is the size and detail of the city San Los! I can't imagine every single part of that city modeled by someone at some point? It really does take the whole Skyrim openness to another level. On the negative side, I spent waaaaaaaay to much time in the strip bar perving and blowing all my cash! :(

I know what you mean about size and detail, i want down just a random alleyway just for exploration, a place that could be so easily missed/its not important to go in it, yet the details were amazing from graffiti on walls, items laying around, lighting etc

lol ive yet to reach the strip club, better bring plenty of cash by the sounds of it! ;)

I wonder what press you were reading. The 360 version has a metacritic score of 98/100 from 40 reviews. Maybe they are missing a whole bunch of reviews, possibly those not in English? The lowest score I've seen was from the escapist, who gave it a 3/5 due to its nasty protagonists but still acknowledged the great technical achievements.

It's true that a lot of the humour on the radio and tv has a very familiar tone, and that a lot of the missions still involve driving somewhere and shooting people. But having the three characters does freshen things up, especially when they are on the same mission, and the heists are pretty spectacular.

I really like the fact that you can replay missions and can get gold silver or bronze for each performance. This allows a much more generous checkpoint system than previous gta games; you can even skip missions if you get really stuck. But the only way to get gold is to play the whole mission through without failing.

I like the fact that the one guy who behaves most consistently like how a lot of people play gta is universally reviled and feared by the other characters. He's the only guy that has "rampage" missions. He also has a really properly brutal mission that I just got to last night, and found it very unpleasant. It hasn't spoiled my overall enjoyment though.

PS3 or Xbox

GTA5 sounds great from reading reviews and seeing what everyone has been up to in this thread & I want to ask for some help here…

My partner and I had our delightful courtship killing prostitutes et al playing Vice City over 10 yrs ago on a PS2. Now we're a little older, have a nice garden with chickens and cats in tow and wanted to Play GTA5. Call it stoking up the fire…(-: Our present game console is a Wii which is only used for family games at Christmas time & we don't own a PS3, Xbox 360 or a PC. We're all Mac - sorry Bill.

There's plenty of offers out there for a game console + GTA 5 but we can't decide PS3 or Xbox and also what drive size would we need to just play GTA5.

Any advice would be gratefully recieved… of course while we wait for ED to be released !

I think both versions have a mandatory installation of about 8 GB; the 360 version comes on 2 discs, with the first one being an install disc and the second one being a "play" disc; it is not recommended to install the "play" disc, because using the hard drive and disc drive simultaneously is faster than using just the hard drive (or something).

I don't think it would matter which platform you got it on, if you had no interest in playing other games. Maybe PS3 because of the blu ray player?

I'd bear in mind Rockstar's history with Microsoft, so as much as I am loathe to say it, the Xbox might be a better choice for GTA V

Thanks for the help..
yes we'd only be playing GTA 5, XBox scenario sounds a little complicated plus we have an aversion to Microsoft (-: - yet the 360 has Kinect which looks interesting.

PS3 or XBox - Daddy or chips? are the graphics for GTA 5 the same on each?
We're merely looking for a way to play this game in the cheapest way at the highest quality at the best resolution - I guess the future proofness of consoles is up for debate, but interesting to know only 8gb is needed for this game.

edit I guess it'll be the PS3 then?

The two versions are now very close

There is a detailed comparison here... It looks like ps3 has slightly better textures but 360 sometimes has better frame rate; these guys slightly prefer the ps3 version. On balance

@ The Lone Gunman - Dr. Wookie. I would not allow myself to judge the game I do not know. I just read somewhere that it is always the same repetitive game for 10 years, always the same mission, and the graphics are from another time. But I read that the level of detail is very high. Finally, the author said that apart from driving cars and kill people and go to prostitutes, there was nothing more.
But I repeat, this is not my personal opinion, because I do not have an opinion about it.

:)
