Here are some Dev responses from 15/11/14:

So the newsletter says there will be 30 playable ships, not 25.

"After the 16th December we will continue to update with more polish and content such as the playable ships we committed to in our Kickstarter campaign – in fact I’m delighted to be able to tell you that we are now planning to eventually have 30 playable ships in Elite: Dangerous, 5 more than we committed to in Kickstarter."

But it reads to me like there will be 30 at some point, not on the 16/12/14. I wonder if there will be 25 at launch.

It means there will be more ships over time, not on the 16th.

Michael

how many ships on release day?

We'll reveal more about release as we approach, but not all 25 will be available upon release. They will be added as we progress beyond that point.

Michael

Uh... Not that I need so many ships but I take this as an indicator that my theory that we will get something unfinished (compared to the DDF) the 22nd because of some unknown reason (guess its a money thing).

More things will be coming after the initial launch - this is just the first release, not the final release.

Michael

Ok, Michael, as David dodged my question in his 'Answers' thread, which was asked by me and one other poster, I'll ask it again here, so we can hopefully get a straight answer:

How many new ships are currently planned to be added to the game between now and December 16th?

It's fine if the answer is zero, I just want to know what to expect.

Keep your eyes peeled for a future newsletter.

Michael

I agree on all points. Hence the Elite ranks already accomplished, people with billions and bored players. In a month. A MONTH!?!?!?

No matter how high you set the bar on Elite rank a very rare few players will achieve it fast.

I'm one of those players with a lot of time of my hands and if it took me 12 hours a day to do i would do it, difficulty etc does not factor in but modern gamers and their OCD to complete things does.

Kind of surprised you really think the original was so much more difficult, it was 6k kills for elite in the original game far far less than this modern iteration.

Pretty disappointed a more seasoned "forumite" would have made this thread to be honest, developers hardly ever place dates on things and "soon" TM etc is a staple of development processes for a good reason.

No need to attack FD for doing the same as 99% of gaming dev's midway through major projects and if i need to explain to you why this is a staple of said dev projects you obviously know very little about the process.

Have a little patience, take a break from the game for a month or two if you have to but don't start pointless topics like this.

16/12/14 was their date that they set for the release of this game. FD has no publisher for this game.

There seems to be some disconnect between features that would be in the games release, and extra features that will be provided free of charge at a later date.

There is a difference between releasing a feature complete game with bugs (industry standard) and a non feature complete game.

Are these extra features, such as the multiplayer update and passenger missions part of the actual game, or bonus features that weren't expected?

Amen. +1

ED was my first game I backed on KS, so I don't have anything to compare it with, when it comes to "how many of the promised/proposed features were implemented at launch day". Do you?

As for the state of the game when it launched, it is what it is. A date was set, FD have a finite team to implement a nearly infinite amount of features. Not all will make it by release day.
It's fine to disagree with the decisions FD made, but also rather pointless at this time.

I'm 110% okay with FD being vague about what will come when, especially seeing how pretty much everything they say is being interpreted. Wings/Co-Op has been announced with a pretty detailed roadmap.

As for roadmaps go, anyone who has touched development know that not everything goes according to plan. Usually you have a set deadline, and will need to modify the goals you can achieve or the quality there of accordingly.

My favorite quote from the Devs was "Game design isn't a democracy".

I certainly don't know, that's why I had a question mark at the end of my question.

If there are new features that aren't part of the game ED can be as vague or specific as they like. If they want to keep things as a surprise they can, but I've been hearing about surprises for months and being told to look at the newsletters for news.

I'd just like them to be honest and state that the game is still in beta, it will be ready for release "soon" and here are a list of features that they are trying to include in the game at this time.

or partake in experiments aimed at changing the background simulator , a few hours a day is enough a few groups exist.

"A few hours a day" is quite a lot of time to ask of someone. Assume "a few" is 2 hours, and assume a person has to eat, sleep, work and spend time with family...those two hours may well be the entirety of such a persons free time... :D :p

That's exactly what they did. Unfortunately they forgot to tell people that waited for option #2 they'd really be getting option #1. That's why "anybody have an issue".

As players, we can't help if FD is "behind in development" or "over promised on the project timeline." My point is, I would much rather play an incomplete version of the game NOW rather than wait to play a complete version of the game LATER (especially if they are going to roll out free updates along the way to bring it feature complete).

As others have undoubtedly already said, it's barely been a month since release, and a couple of those weeks were the holidays.

Get a grip.

We've been able to play an incomplete version since Alpha.

I've got a grip. A good one. How about you re-read the OP and understand before posting.

I believe it is because whenever a dev gives an answer to a question that has not been thought about 1000x times and analyzed by an entire PR department, someone somewhere on the forums will pick that comment apart and twist it to the worst possible answer.

Below is an over dramatized example

"I had coffee this morning, it was good." Dev

"HOW DARE YOU HATE ON TEA LOVERS EVERYWHERE YOU ..." someone.

So how do you expect if they say something like

"Oh we might add feature X in month Y" dev

Feature X is 5 mins late / or no longer planned.

"How DARE YOU YOU PROMISED US YOU OWE US!!!" person

I don't blame frontier for being a bit more secretive on what they talk about and when.

^^Yes this so much^^

I have seen it with almost every dev team for years now and i expect no different from FD, its the over eager backseat developers on forums etc that drive the secrecy and although its a shame its entirely understandable.

We will still be playing a "incomplete" version in a year or more time too, games of this scope are never finished.

The problem Sanderson has, is Frontier's very poor communication - as well as their apparent change in direction of the game. Anyone that has played Elite for the past year will be able to see that the game has gone in a somewhat different direction to what was originally planned. That in itself isn't an issue - but the fact Frontier won't talk about it is a issue for some people (me included).

Please understand what the original post is about. It's not about being "secretive" on upcoming content (most people here understand why they would be secretive about upcoming content I am sure. Sanderson for one has already said he understands that). The issue that is actually being addressed is about Frontier not communicating on the missing parts of the game, and why the direction of the game has apparently changed.

For sure. You also get a lot of commenting about the business, their finance etc. Some people have the background knowledge and expertise to do so, but I think most of us don't.

All in all, I think this is one of the better lengthier threads that sticks to its guns.

At the risk of getting 'shot' at, look at "World of Warcraft" (Duck! Incoming!). You can play the original, but, if you want the (current) full effect you will have to purchase the optional add-ons. FD have, effectively, done the same thing. If they waited until they had a complete game it would never reach the shelves, as they (and we, the backers/players) keep coming up with good ideas to be incorporated into the game.
