Next ship for trading?

I've been tooling about in my Type 6 for a while now, quietly earning some credits in the bank. I have enough for an Asp, but nowhere near enough for kitting it out to a decent level yet.

SO my question is; what would other commanders recommend as the next logical ship to get for trading, in higher quantities than the current 112 tons?

A Type 7 maybe?

Any advice, and reasons why, are much appreciated! :)

I went from the Type 6 to the ASP.

It has a bit more cargo space and great jump range. It is also able to defend. Take a look at it.

If you want significant upgrade in cargo then I think there are two viable options

Type7 will cost ( approx) 23 million with basic upgrades
or
Clipper will cost around 30 million for a basic setup

I have been trying to make the same decision and the type 7 is my choice, it isn't as good an alrounder as the clipper but the clipper starts hitting the 50-60million bracket if you equip it for combat etc.
.
I have decided it is cheaper to run my existing T6 as a miner, kit out a Viper for combat and run a T7 purely for trade

I'm the opposite from Kram, I had a T7 and it was painful to do trade runs in it. I'd wait for that 30 mil and get a Clipper, it's well worth the wait/ rep with Empire.

I've been trading and doing missions in my Type 6 through Fed/Alliance space for a while now and have been pondering a change of ship.

Same choice as the OP, Asp or Type 7.

To buy and outfit the Asp to the level I want would cost around 19 million and the Type 7 around 29 million. The Asp would have 112T of cargo space and the T7 200T. The Asp would be able to defend itself better in theory but I'd be going with Class 3A shields and I don't think they're up to much more than saving you from docking scrapes.

What puts me off the T7 is the fact that you can't dock at outposts and I do a lot of missions to outposts. I've never had a 'trade route' as such and I've never traded any rares (never seen any), so I don't do the G word.

I don't think the Asp is worth the outlay/upkeep for a 112T trading vessel (over the 100T T6) and the T7 is a pure A to B main station trading ship.

The only thing that would probably sway me to the T7 would be finding a main station that deals in metals and I've never come across one anywhere.

It's a shame there's not a T6.5 coming, 150T cargo space and can dock at outposts for around 8 million cr, as that would suit me fine. Ah well.

I would recommend that you always go for the type 7
you will bee earning 500 k with a half decent trade route.
Then you can start thinking about the asp or clipper.
Just remember that the type runs at at fraction of the up keep cost of asp and clipper.
sure you can always go for asp and trade it inn for type later if you want. it might be faster but i would not recommend running the asp without shields. its bloody expensive if you dent it. 6000 for 6 % hull damage.

A grade FSD for the type is 5-6 mill. i do recommend it.

I am now currently flying an asp that i will trade inn for a type 7 when i have the money for it (i also need a descent trade route)

Go Asp and run rares (really enjoy those long legs) -> Type 7 -> Clipper to enjoy the view -> Python, the one ring to rule them all...

Enjoy each step along the way and have a great time.

They are not that rare.
I founds some in federation space.
the most idealy suited one was Close to LHS 3447.
Its was like 2 light years apart.
Refinery to Industry, but there is a type 9 with friends grinding that path so i don't expect it to last :)

I got the Asp as soon as I had the opportunity. In the T6 you can have 112 t only without shields, and I don't wanto to carry 1,2 M Palladium in a casket. No way to escape, no way to face pirates, and so on.
A 3A shield is ok against small opponents, you can use pips for the worst situations, and you gain 6 (six!) hardpoints, not those 2 small ones on the T6. I mean... Everything the T6 has, the Asp has got better. There is no alternative for the same price. You can slowly outfitting it (actually you store your money in ship upgrades, you won't lose it when selling it) and when you will have the right Cr amount for a T7, get it for a while to quickly shorten the distance from the Clipper.

Just for trading & not kitted for any kind of combat, I will start with the Asp. Great improvement in jump range & agility means your trading runs are faster and you make more money.

If you already near T-7 money, I suggests to keep the T6, go to empire space and grind some rank while trading to get the Clipper. There is no sense to get a T7 to grind a Clipper as with a good trading route, you can grind the 6 million difference in price in 3.5 hours on a Type-6.

literally bought my t7 tonight, upgrading from a t6 doing rares. i...LOVE it. The jump range isn't as good, true, but having reliable and predictable income/hour (by trading normal goods) and in good amount (216t with my setup. by my calculations, 2 mil/hr easy enough, and accounting for human error/breaks)

The maneuverability and speed is surprising. Able to hold boost around 280 with a good power distributor and D grade thrusters at max cargo. pitch/yaw is much better than i expected, as is lateral/horizontal/vertical thrust. I was worried about being 'space cow'ish, but i'm still able to speed dock before being scanned most times (without really trying or aligning for supercruise exit) keep a class 4 shield gen in there, it's worth the opportunity cost. i only have a b grade FSD, but it's good enough for a 3 jump, 32ly range trip. (about 4k-5k in fuel each way, no real need for fuel scoop over more cargo)

Would I compare it with a clipper? absolutely, get one of those if you can. I can't be bothered to gain rank, but on paper, the clipper is absolutely comparable, if not better in some aspects.

With a VERY good trade route you can grind more than 4 million with a type 7, closing the gap with everything you want 'fast' and thus skipping the expensive clipper, which is only the same ammount of cargo for much higher maintenance costs...
