System exploration question

I noticed that when I explore a system and turn in the data that the system map does not update. For example when I went to the Hsien Baji system and started scanning I found approximately 3-4 planetary systems (each system was approx. 2500 Ls apart). And I flew within 2-3 LS of almost each planet to scan them and let the computer name them (I think I missed only 2 planets). I then flew the required 20+LY to turn in the data. But before I turned in the data I went to the system map to compare the before and after data. I saw no change in the system view from before or after I turned in the data. this has happened twice that I know of. I noticed the same thing when I turned in Maujavant System data also.

I was expecting to see the multiple resource nodes / asteroid belts that I scanned at least. And also the new planets that I also scanned.

What are you expecting to change ?

What WOULDN'T you expect to change???

I arrive in a system where not even the primary has a name. I open the system view, and all it shows is the primary. Nothing else. Also, the navigation list is completely empty except for the primary.

So, I hit the D-Scanner, and it pops up in my hud "25 New Astronomical Objects Discovered". I suddenly see all the orbits of "Unexplored" planets and asteroid belts.

I spend 30 minutes, or an hour, whatever, flying around and scanning all of those 25 objects, right?

Now, when I open the damned system view... WHY does it STILL show ONLY the primary and not the other 25 OBJECTS I JUST SPENT AN HOUR SCANNING????????????

I EXPECT all my information to POPULATE the goddamned system view.... THAT is what I EXPECT! Why would I NOT expect that? Why would ANYONE not expect that?!?!?!?

Yes, I'm yelling, because I'm extremely d off that I had to spend an hour searching this forum to find an answer to this question (which I STILL don't have) because the game manual says NOTHING about it! In fact, I'm appalled by how much the manual completely leaves out, yet is absolutely essential to understand how to play this game!!! That's how this whole game has been from the beginning... like some kind of cryptic mystery that requires you to be some kind of online detective, scouring the forums and Google search results for hours on end just to figure out how everything works and why things don't work the way they should. It has been THE most frustrating learning curve of any game I've played in the last 10 years, I swear to f'ing God!

So... fine, if scanning astronomical objects DOESN'T make the system view update to show all the planets and other things that ARE in the system... what DOES make it update????

Sounds like a bug to me.
I explore a lot... so here is a typical situation....
I jump in... only the stars are shown with no info... I scan and discover objects.
I check my system view... those objects are shown with no info.
I fly and do a detail scan of everything and make sure that I get a notification stating that the scan is complete (ie.. shows info when targeted etc..)
Then, when all is said and done I check my system view and make sure I did not miss anything (ie.. mouse over everything and look at the info displayed).
Also... when flying around I keep scanning as I only have the basic discovery scanner so I need to be really close to an object before my discovery scanner will see it.

Odd. It sounds like *YOU* have a bug or don't understand what you see.

All asteroid belts you find are combined into 1 view per sun. Each sun can have multiple "belts" but only 1 shows on that system map per sun.

This means finding a system with 1 sun, 8 planets/moons and 12 asteroid belts, the system map will show 1 sun, 1 asteroid belt and 8 planets/moons -- not all 20 things but only 9.

One technique for exploration deals with use of that system map extensively.

Having an advanced discovery scanner, you pop the advanced (system wide) scan then open up the system map and look at it. You look at what "unexplored" planets and moons are there and by their colors/appearance, determine which ones are of highest resale value for spending the time flying up to scan them -- then go to only those particular celestials, detail scan them and leave.

Asteroid belts are pretty much completely worthless right now. So if you're into maximizing how much you make, don't waste a lot of time by flying within 5ls of asteroid belts - just focus on planets and suns.

This technique would NOT be possible if that system view were not populated yet this is how many explorers operate all the time.

System map is updated immediately after you finish scanning an UNEXPLORED object. Never had a problem with that, so either you have found a pretty rare bug, or you're doing something wrong. Like bringing up a map for a neighbouring system which you only passed but did not explore (many systems have names only slightly differing in 1-2 letters).

This is the map view the instant I arrive in a system (suns are always automatically revealed)...notice there are NO planets.

This is the map view after I have triggered the discovery scanner (note I do NOT need to fly close to the planets for this):

You ONLY need to fly near a planet to get the planets name. If you have the "Detailed Surface Scanner" you will also get the planets composition if you fly close to it.

You do NOT need to fly near a planet for it to populate on your map. You simply hold down your System Scanner button and wait for the Inception blast. The UI will then show "xx Objects Discovered". The range of the Basic Scanner is 500ls, the Intermediate Scanner is 1000ls and the Advanced Scanner has unlimited range. These planets will not have names and will show up as "unexplored". You need to fly close to explore them.

If you go to a system that already has planets on the map, then there is nothing for you to discover...the planets have already been discovered. If you are expecting a map to change, then you need to go to a system that you have no map for.

There are two game mechanics at play here:

1) Discovery = Discovering planets that are not on your system map.
2) Exploration = Flying close to a planet and finding its name (and composition if you have a detailed surface scanner).

Also a detailed surface scanner will not work without a discovery scanner (but you can use a discovery scanner on its own).
