Is there a Black Box?

Hi,

Has there been any mention of items that can be recovered from a destroyed ship other than cargo?

Picture the scene:

I'm exploring deep space. I've recorded new space routes or I have discovered things but I have not handed them in for the reward. Then further along for whatever reason my ships explodes.

Can I go back and recover the black box and the data? Can others do the same?

It would be great to jump into a system. Detect debris and maybe learn how they met their fate no matter how long ago it was.

I like this idea. It would be very interesting to have a black box that would allow hear but mostly to see what it happened. But technically, it would be possible to develop for thousands of players? That would not take too many resources on the servers ?

Maybe the black box is just for NPC wrecks scattered around deep space if there is a resource issue.

Maybe explorers can buy reinforced black boxes - although that seems a bit oxymoronic

I have a vague recollection that this has been mentioned before. If I remember correctly, the prevailing argument against the idea was that all ships would instantly communicate your kills and other stats to track your rating/mission state.

Still that doesn't discount ships from much earlier times... ;)

I'm sure I also read somewhere that explorers would have to return to civilised space to report their findings. So if true that would indicate that not everything is instantly communicated.

I do not think anything has been set in stone at the moment so that was part of the reason I asked the question.

Maybe 'exploring data' shouldn't be transmitted because it could be picked up and read. Handing in the disk (or whatever they're using in the future) will guarantee payment. :)
I love the idea of finding NPC black boxes that lead into missions. I think the forums are likely to contain plenty of last moment moments :)rolleyes:), if you know what I mean.

Wouldn't it make sense for any Black Box on the ship to be tied into the commander's escape capsule? That way there's no chance of data loss?

It would be cool to dock with a mysterious spooky derelict ship (when you can walk around) and discover the crew's and captain's logs of everything going horribly wrong... event horizon style..
There could be a mission to collect the black box (and any logs) and find out what happened.

And there's the problem with a black box of any kind. If you have one, it's pretty hard to argue that it should be left with the debris rather than included in the escape capsule.

If it's with the capsule, then the probability of being able to pirate and get away with it is zero. If it's with the debris, then the probability approaches zero (depending on whether or not the black box is indestructible). Even if it is destructible, that merely adds make-work to the act of piracy (i.e. declare act of piracy, attack & destroy target, scoop cargo and then locate and destroy black box. All before the police show up.).

Remember that pirates have feelings too and shouldn't be unnecessarily irritated.

None of that rules out Cosmo Bozo's idea, as that's a derelict with intact systems. There's also no reason why, hull space permitting, explorers shouldn't be able to buy a piece of equipment that contains a number of very small hyperspace drones.

Thinking about it, that's one way that FD could deal with the problem of explorers and saving. If most of the time you can only save in a station, and given that if your ship is destroyed you won't actually die, explorers could have a 5-shot hyperspace drone launcher (i.e. a quick save mechanism). When they've got to exit, they use that & disconnect. Their ship remains where it is. 99% of the time they won't be spotted by anyone and can continue from there next time the play, but if they're destroyed they start at the nearest station with their "saved" exploration data.

Black Boxes

I can confirm that a sort of black box exists in game at the moment. I encountered about eight black box pieces when I went to an unidentified signal source which turned out to be a destroyed ship. I have no idea if they have an actual function other than being illegal goods. (e.g. allowing one to collect a bounty on whomever destroyed t he ship)

I had a similar find. I thought I would scoop a couple to see what they did and then totally forgot they were in my hold. 10k fine and only 2k each on the black market :(
