I think we should keep things formal. How about, "Dear Sir or Madam, I would like to extend my felicitous greetings to you as we find ourselves in close proximity within the vast inky void of space. Your faithfully, Cmdr [yourname]"
Sound good? If need be, that can be compressed to the handy easy acronym, "DSoMIWLTEMFGTYAWFOICPWTVIVoSYFC[your initial]". Perfectly clear and understandable, if you ask me

I suggest "Ahoy hoy", which was very nearly the greeting anyway. Actually, I don't suggest that at all - I usually find that the vast, deep black has enough space for me to type a short message without hitting something. I already feel old enough without sounding like Mr Burns

Not entirely sure what the goal of this thread is. In the words of OP: If you really want to type in "Hoi", then keep doing it?
Personally, I think it's most atmospheric and thus immersive to chat how your character would, so obviously it'd depend on their role and "degree of professionalism", as well as possibly their culture.
The only thing I deem anti-climatic is the salutes or smileys so popular in the chat. Matter of preferences, I suppose.

I prefer Howdy Commander! (But I've been known to say Greetings or other salutations)
