Elite Dangerous in the Media thread

Dealing with media outlets on a daily basis, pushing out statements, placing opeds, etc. I can attest that this is absolutely true. Many outlets demand outright exclusivity in order to publish a thing. And doing so definitely helps with placement. This not made up. That's actually how it works.

Other times, there may be a general announcement, and those might go out in the newsletter, etc. and still find their way into news publications. Or you just issue a statement.

As it is, what will end up happening with this story is other gaming websites will pick up the PC Gamer article, link to it, and say, "As PC Gamer reported..."

Finally, we already get exclusive updates every single time Frontier pops out another newsletter.

There simply is no valid complaint here. You feed stories to media. That's how it's done. Frontier wants you to see the article, so they post it to their existing fan base via social media. Move along.
I have no problem with magazines getting exclusives. I have no problem with Frontier posting links to those exclusives on social media. I do think there should be another outlet for such news that doesn't involve going on Facebook or Twitter though. A simple news item on the elitedangerous.com page with a nice RSS feed would be perfect. That way anyone who's interested can see the news immediately. [And the forum isn't an appropriate place, because it moves so fast the news just gets buried; I actually saw the report on Reddit before seeing it here]

My problem with Twitter and Facebook is the same as the forum, posts like that get lost among the thousands of others that flit across my screen. An ED news RSS would be much easier for me to deal with.

Well, that's the same problem with email. Scores, hundreds, or thousands of emails all competing for placement in your inbox. Even an RSS feed will take in stories on a continual basis, and the one you actually want to read might have been pushed down the fourth or fifth slot. That's just the nature of the beast. And it makes sense since after a day or two, the news gets stale anyway.

The also retweeted PC Gamers tweet about the article the moment the article went live...that is how I saw it personally. Also, as far as I can tell it was also posted here on the forum by other people pretty much instantly. Why does it matter who posted it? Maybe they even planned to do so, but since other people already had brought it up it just felt redundant. The important thing is that people get to know about it...which you obviously do...

This has nothing to do with them "rating the press higher than us customers". That argument is silly and you know it. ;)

Turn on notifications for tweets from FD/ED, that's what I have done. Problem solved! :)

1. No, it's not silly and YOU should know it but, as you're the self appointed savior of FD, I'm not surprised you feel that way.

2. I don't have those Tweety things installed nor do I want them notifying me.

That's great and all, we understand that. How about at the same time for non-exclusive demanding gaming site info then so it reaches everyone at the same time?

How long after the PCGamer article you actually got the info? Is that amount of time, or having to click somewhere else for a change, so really critical to you and worth getting this upset? Especially when 99% of the info from FDEV on Elite news has always been (and likely still will be) released here, just for you. Does not that 99% mean anything?

Seems like a bit of a disproportionate reaction no?

Is this where I call you a "troll"? Or...maybe we could stop using terms like "self appointed savior", "trolls", "white knights" and other similar expressions for people that might not agree with us about issues...

That's fine. No one is forcing you to do anything.

However, that was a response to xyphic, not you.

Yup, you're the only one that's allowed snarky replies, I forgot about that. My bad. Perhaps you could add the term "troll" to the bin with "White Knight" and the others?

It's not about just this single PC Gamer article. Over the last 7-8 months I've tried my best to stay up with all things ED, because I love the game, and it has been a real challenge. I've entered contests and had to search various sites for the results, days or weeks after it was supposed to be posted (on here btw).

What I'm trying to say, I suppose, is that information about the game has and is all over the place. Why would I want or need to install and/or subscribe to dozens of media and social media sites to stay abreast of the latest info?

Doesn't make sense to me as this is the "official" FD forum but, that's just my opinion, you all seem fine with it.

I already did.

That was the point of the last post.

Great! We can all skip the forum and move to Facebook. Yay!

Truth be told, by the time I saw it on Facebook, and read it, was excited enough to come here to chat about community goals, it had already been posted on the forum and was already being discussed. It wasn't even an hour old.

But I give up. It's *only* official, Frontier wants you to read the article, *only* if Frontier publishes the article first before they're ninjaed by the forum goers here who post it 25 seconds after seeing it on Facebook. Ironically, this is the thread to post it in, appropriately titled, "Elite Dangerous in the Media thread." So, you don't need Facebook. You did everything correctly. You saw somebody post the article in the appropriate thread on the forum, and you read it.

Moving along, those community goals sound really cool, huh? Can't wait to see a warzone pop up at LFT 926 as the Pilot's Federation expansion continues!

I dunno man, I am really curious. I find that most of the info is here sooner or later. The times I need to leave this site for news before finding them here does not seem to me to be significant to be bothersome at all tbh. Personal appreciation I guess.

I already did.

That was the point of the last post.

Take your own advice man.

That's great that it doesn't bother you, I can appreciate that but, can't you all appreciate that indeed it does bother some of us?

Take your own advice man.

(One last try from my side...)

Let's go through my previous post again:

Is this where I call you a "troll"?

Notice the question mark. This isn't me calling you a "troll"...this is me asking a rhetorical question after you called me a "self appointed savior".

I then follow this up with this:

Or...maybe we could stop using terms like "self appointed savior", "trolls", "white knights" and other similar expressions for people that might not agree with us about issues...

Stating that we should NOT use these terms...ever.

Show me one single post where I have ever called someone something like that. If you find one I will be quite surprised since I have no recollection of ever writing that.

You win. Feel better?

I'm really looking forward to this part, from Michael: "a faction might task our pilots with racking up a number of kills in a particular system, effectively sending massive numbers of players to war for or against particular group." PC Gamer writes Brookes as explaining "these massive player migrations will have a knock-on effect on galaxy-wide economy and power structures."

I think that's really cool. And a good way of potentially organizing the war zones to incentivize combateers to sign up. Notably, there's a big disincentive for not fighting -- which is, your favored faction might lose the system!

So, in my personal game, I'm trying to help the Pilot's Fed expand into LFT 926. If a war zone pops up and the Dark Wheel asks Pilot's Fed fighters to take out 1,000 LFT 926 Interstellar ships, I've worked too hard to blow it now. I'll be flying over there in a heartbeat to contribute to the cause! Can't wait! :)

I really want to believe, but isnt that already what Conflict Zones do basically already? This seems only to be adding some "publicity" and a "timer" to it.

It is not clear to me if there any new incentives to participate in those, that current conflict zones or similar dont have already.
