Help with Cobra jump distance

Hi,

I was making steady progress in my Cobra until I recently upgraded the Frame Shift Drive. Prior to the upgrade my max jump distance was around 9Ly but since the upgrade I can only manage 3.2Ly. I tried buying my original FSD back to see if my max jump distance went back to normal but it went down even further to 2.7Ly.

Can anyone help as I am stuck with a ship that hasn't got the range to get anywhere?

Thanks
Dustbag

Which FSD did you put in it and what's in it now? If you went back to previous setting it should be the same unless you've added more weight to the ship via weapons or shields and the like.

My guess is you upgraded the letter, but downgraded the class. Class trumps letter. The Cobra comes stock with a Class 4, letter E drive. If you got a smaller class, you'll lose jump range.

I had this issue, I made multiple upgrades to my ship, one was the frame shift drive. At the end I could not jump out of the system I was in. So I went back to the shipyard, looked at the stats on each device again and made a compromise to sort the issue out. Sometimes an impulse buy without looking into the overall impact on your ship can cause an issue.

click on compare before you buy. if your jump range is in red it has gone down and if it says 2.7 in red, you definitely are trying to fit the wrong class of module...

^ this, always.

Look to the right to see whether you increase (values in blue) or decrease (values in red) particular stats like jump range compared to what you have fitted now. Price alone is never the best indicator of fitness for your ship (same goes for weapons too).

Yeah; you've likely not put the original one back in; you've put one in that has the same letter grade but a smaller size.

Took me a while to figure out why all those nice, expensive FSDs reduced my distance from 11 to 3 on the comparison screen: you need a size 4 :)

Hi,

It turns out I had fitted a class 3 FSD and I needed a class 4 drive. I didn't really understand the concept of the classes but having just lost what little money I had left to buy back a class 4 drive I don't think I will make the same mistake again.

Thanks

You can see the class as size. Class 1 being the smallest and Class 9 being the biggest. The letter is the quality *within* that class.
Generally its a bad idea to fit a smaller class than your ship can take, tho there are exceptions (I fly my Type-6 with a powerplant 2 classes lower)

Edit to change class max (Thanks _flin_)

Dustbag,

You probably fitted a Class 3 "C" rated FSD drive, which would work, but is underpowered for the mass of your ship. Have a look at Elite Shipyard (http://www.edshipyard.com) which can help you plan your ship upgrades and predict the cost, as well as see your final laden/unladen jump range.

I think the best way to explain the rating system is that Class indicates power and rating indicates efficiency. So an F2 multi-cannon is much better than an E1 multi-cannon.

If you look at this table in the Elite Wikipedia, you can see all the FSD's class and ratings.

Hope that helps.
