This is a little off topic, and kinda newbish, but is insurance not automatic? I have been flying about 10 days, died a few times, and had a cheap buy-back each time. What am I missing?

Basically you are given a lifetime insurance policy- if you lose your ship you have the option to rebuy for a small excess payment.
It's on the status panel in your ship
Right hand panel under status TAB - make sure your have re-buy cost available in your wallet at all times, unless your just in the free sidewinder... If you dont have that re-buy cost covered, you loose what ever ship you current flying and go back to the free sidewinder.. So if i didnt have re-buy cost covered, i'd loose about 200m.

Insurance in context of the game means you pay 5% of your vessels current value when you manage to destroy it.
I believe the default keybind for the right hand panel is "4". Rebuy cost tells you how much it is exactly with your current loadout.
Careful if flying without insurance(ie. less money than rebuys worth), you may lose your ship if its worth more than your available funds and max 200k cr loan.

If in a sidewinder without upgrades just opt for a free new ship. it is when you get upgrades you pay to get the ship back and all the upgrades. So always have enough saved. The current cost to me to replace my ASP is about 220,000 credits or a bit more. After one ill attempt on a Python the cost to repair my ship was over 130,000 credits. So as an FYI always keep plenty of credits in reserve in case.

I just got my first Anaconda last night and have been flying it All Day!!
After weeks and weeks of slugging it out moving up through the different awesome ships I finally reached my first goal in this awesome sim..
These's are tears of joy!
So what are you going to do with your anaconda?
Plan is to continue trading with it, nice to have bigger jump range again.. Its great to be in it after the time spent in the T9.. The Conda is fun to fly like the Python was.. I'll start building up other ships with the funds from Trader Conda and get ready for Wings..
Oh! And as mentioned above, I want to blow $h.t up with its big gun too!
