Should vessels have navigational lights?

Python with backing lights and says like a lorry in reverse... can see the fun in that :D

If you want to annoy the 'realistic sound' people you should hear the the warning.

"BEEP ,BEEP,BEEP. Caution: Vehicle Reversing. Caution: Vehicle Reversing. BEEP ,BEEP,BEEP. :D:p

Hmm not sure about the spotlight in space, what if you wan't to have some naughty zero-g fun with a great view.

Could end up with what do you call it '******g' spots. :p

Especially once you can add the Oculus Rift Goggles/Gloves/Boots and Groinal attachments ;)

+1 for strobes on the ships like today's aircraft, and +1 for being able to turn them on/off at will (or at least with 'landing gear' - which for space could simply be the lights, and in atmosphere would include undercarriage).

Would be nice to see the more heavily policed or populated systems fine you for not deploying them when in the vicinity of the station as it's a safety hazard.

Not really fussed about realism, I just think it would look good :)

<nods> A ship without running-lights would attract attention (and you should be able to disable them as needed).

I think spotlights are a great idea for getting an idea of distance, a limited range spotlight can be a big help with range perception.

Of course the Oculus Rift or 3D TV could give players a big depth perception advantage for combat flying through cluttered space (derelicts/asteroids/ect).

But what about turning indicators, reversing lights, stop lights? :S;)

I agree in part. I think it would be an atmospheric addition to the game, but I'm not sold on the idea of it being a finable offense of you don't turn them on. That's a bit too simmy, if you take my meaning. It's not like MS Flight Simulator. Still, I suppose we *do* get fined for weapon discharges near stations, so it's not unsupported.

I don't know think of the ultra safe systems with Viper Cops with speed guns hiding behind asteroids and traffic lights at space lane intersections.:p

And lets not forget space station parking fees or park and ride systems!

Local systems have to supplement their tax revenue *somehow*. ;)

I think you need at least 4 classes of external light:

Coloured navigation lights to indicate the extremities of the spacecraft (maybe red or amber at the front and green or blue at the back?).*

Blinking strobes to draw the eye. Maybe these could also be used to indicate the size of the spacecraft, small ships have fast-blinkers and large ones slow blinkers (so you can get some idea if you're looking at a small craft at medium range or a large craft at long range from the lights alone).

Landing lights to illuminate the ground under and in front of the spacecraft when coming in to land or on the ground.

Floodlights to illuminate the spacecraft itself, so it can be identified even if you're in shadow (also to make it look pretty :) ).

Maybe also some sort of spotlight that could be used to illuminate something else, such as a wreck in space that you're interested in; possibly it could even be steerable.

*So if you see only red/amber nav lights you know it's facing towards you. Green/blue only means it's facing away. A mix of red/amber and green/blue means you're looking at the side, dorsel or ventral surface.

I agree, though if they were on by default and off meant silent running/up to no good... then it could be used against/queried if you were discovered.

I don't like the concept of turning them off for the hell of it and then getting a silly fine like in a Flight Simulator as you say, if lights then they should either be purely aesthetic (and that can include on or off for fun) or have a real purpose to it (trying to remain hidden)

Do you also want to be permanently blinded by a laser glancing your cockpit?

I don't think cockpit windows should be vulnerable to this sort of thing, that would make them seem an even dafter idea than they already do.

oh well sorry for suggesting something new which no space sim has done before-
guess I´ll have to invest into my own space sim development team one day.
Well maybe if next year goes well enough I have enough spare cash
