Dipping my toe into open play

As a premium beta (sort of) veteran, (who still has trouble fighting damn eagles), I still remember the massacres at Freeport back when we were all crammed into a tiny wee bubble and anacondas were only a million credits or thereabouts. Looking out of the letterbox and sniffing the space air and seeing anacondas and vipers sitting there trying to look innocent.

“What me? Blow you up the second you come out? Not me, nonono. What hard points? Oh, THESE hard points? Just letting them dry out because they’ve just been painted. Honest”.

I’ve since stayed partly in solo or in group play, but as most of the group I joined seem to be over the pond and I’ve not found a UK group I thought, “Sod it, I’ve got insurance” and went on open play last week, (expecting to be dead in seconds at the hands of a venomous 11 year old as happened in my brief venture into counter-strike back in the day), in a type 6, Cobra and lately an Asp, mostly trading. Not rares, I've not got the patience for rares).

And it’s been great. Admittedly, I’m quite savvy and keep an eye on my scanner to see just who’s behind my 3-9 line. After hours in the inky void trading without seeing a soul on Monday night I saw another commander at an outpost in a cobra. I was waiting to dock and he was taking up the only available pad so I waited and flashed my lights at him. He took off and there was a “moment” that was electric. Like when dogs meet, (no not the bum sniffing), and they either start getting aggressive or become friendly. Maybe if I’d been in a sidey he may have attacked, but I guess an asp looks a bit more meaningful when its 30ft away from you. I said “hi” and we had a little text chat about life on the frontier and we went on our way.

It was pretty damn cool actually. I’ve played online games for years and usually you’re on the red or the blue team and that’s that. In elite, it can be different.

I have been toying with the idea of trying multiplayer. I can't really think of a reason to do it however. Currently I am content with solo play. It would mix things up a little bit and the occasional interaction with another commander would be nice.

All of my open encounters are usually with other fellow traders. Usually its just a pleasent hello - made friends with a couple - nice to see how everyone is progressing.
Keep away from the core systems and rares systems, you wont have any trouble.

Because when you see that hollow contact on your scanner your palms sweat a little and you become very aware of where your pips are. When it turns out friendly its a great feeling and when it doesn't......its a thrill.

Yea, come on into Open Play.
.
To date, I have NEVER been interdicted by another player.
.
We have to remind ourselves that the vast majority of people enjoying Open Play don't come on the forums to wine because... they are enjoying Open Play instead! It's only those who have bad experiences and need to vent that post their frustration. It's understandable that people do that, but it skews the real results.
.
Do people pee in the pool? Sure, sometimes... but you'll probably never really notice.

Better late than never! You'll find it far different than in the old Beta when everyone was crammed in a tiny bubble, with loads of Cr. and nothing much to do apart from hanging out at Freeport.

I've not even played solo or group, seen plenty of other commaders around my expensive trade route, most are happy to say hi, even the 1 pirate I got dragged out of SC for was very polite about it.

Simply wanted me to drop 1/2 my cargo of 14 tons of palladium....... then he found out just how heavily my little viper is armed :D

decided to run away after shooting off 50% of his hull, and I ran the other :p

If you go in a combat zone, or decide to shoot your way across the start systems... then i imagine your life will be very very short, but most players simply want to do their own thing because elite lets you do that

Bill

Oh and dont turn up on my trade route if you have a wanted sticker... I need the money ;)

Jump in, when you get out there into the black in Open, it'd be a rare occasion if you see another CMDR. Water's warm, nothing to fear 'cept for the random and occasional pirate, and that's if you're really really unlucky and hang out all the time in the popular trade spots. Sides, I'm reformed and no longer pirating. ;p

Nice to see your enjoying it in open, Most of us a pretty friendly bunch of commanders, although there are some pirates about so be aware.

To be honest. Apart from not wanting to be obliterated before i'd even got out of the shopping trolly / sidewinder, I avoided open play because the performance was terrible. It's way way better now and apart from the occasional rubber banding cmdr in sc, its on par with solo now.

I'm gong to pimp my asp a bit then once I've got a nice insurance kitty, try some pvp. I've not even see one of those big ships coming out of hyperspace yet!! i'll probably have a man wee :)
