Does ED deserve to be branded as a Space Trucking Simulator?

Sadly, the thing I want the most from this game may never even be available. I want to work as a security officer. Yes, we have bounty hunters, but they are fringe vigilantes of space justice, not devoted up-keepers of law and order. I love our BHs they do good work out there, but one day I want to become part of the Federal Security force and be recognized as a honest to goodness space cop. I want to be the one to scan goods, help with local trade disputes, come to a explorer's time of need, and with a team interdict criminals under the name of the Federal Law. I want to be Judge Dredd in space. Bounty Hunting comes close, but it is all about the "kill". I don't want to kill, I want to protect.

Does that exist? Can I have Space Cop Simulator?

Ultimately I would love to see real naval roles and missions against other players and the ai, the current warzones just dont cut it; silly me, when I bought into beta I had hoped roles like these would be available around launch.

Finally a space game for all of us. After waiting for so many years for a decent online space game, FD managed to create a great platform to satisfy our thirst for space exploration and beyond.

Elite: Dangerous has a lot of potential to be something great. In my opinion, it has the potential to beat even the best MMO games out there. However these potential has not been realised yet and I believe that we are currently in a crossroads right now:

The game can either be a great space massive multiplayer online game or a lackluster, halfbaked MMO Single player game.

Couldn't give two hoots about the space trucking thing. What I quoted is the meat of your post.

Considering all but one profession (Trade) dies off once you hit the Asp(About a week of play), yeah its a space truck simulator. Everything past that is just a bigger truck with variation in how it looks until the Type 9

Hell the majority of missions involve guess what? Hauling goods or information to the next system over. Bigger trucks let you take those once in a blue moon offers of 100 tons for 50k. At that point you realize you are just better off free lance trucking goods.

This is Euro Truck in Space, and its disappointing as a combat sim player.

I refuse to be a trucker. So I will remain a spacepoor for the time being, preying on truckers making their lives a bit harder.

So are you satisfied with the way gaming sites brand ED as a Space Trucking Simulator?
Yes.

Because unfortunately that's pretty much all it is right now. The game offers almost no content.

I enjoy doing combat missions. There's two of them available right now. Two, of which one is bugged and both are absolutely boring gameplay wise.
Let me repeat that: Two... missions. "Assassination" and "Kill X amount of Y". That's it. And if that's not enough, to even get some of those going involves hours of waiting for the bulletin board RNG and then hours of hopping USSs. It's pretty damn grim.

The only thing that really kinda works in this game right now is trucking.

I'm sorry to say this, because I really love the look and feel and scale of this game. But the sad fact of the matter is I would've stopped playing a week after release if it weren't for the beautiful visuals, my addiction to space games, my busy work schedule limiting my playtime, the sometimes fun pvp and my hope that FD soon get around to put some actual content in this game rather than a bunch of placeholders and "community goals" which really seem to be nothing more than a community grind rather than a solo one.

The game has potential to be something truly great, but that's all worthless talk as long as that potential isn't being realized.

FD need to put content in this game and they need to do it as fast as humanly possible. That should be their only focus right now.

It's only space trucking if you add "Wild West" to the beginning, and war zones...

Wild West Space Trucking Simulator (with War Zones) on the new frontier.

War zones are the most basic and boring of arenas.

Doesn't it shock anyone that war zones don't even impact your factional reputation when engaging with one faction and declaring yourself party to the other ?

That you can show up at the same warzone a dozen times and alternate between one faction and the other every time with no consequence ?

Warzones were the first PvE arenas introduced in the game and they don't even work properly to impact your factional reputation based on the choices you make.

They are just duck shoots with no permanent consequences.

'I bring friends' !

As far as wild west, I'm unsure what you refer to.

The only viable profession is trading. The rest have a net negative outcome.

Not entirely true, I have been almost entirely bounty hunting, apart from one brief rares run, and handfull of missions I have earned all my wealth through bounty hunting

It is true that the 5 weeks of futile bounty hunting (never found a pirate yet apart from NPC's) I could have spent the same time in 'space trucker mode' and earned a few million credits
but hey ho if I wanted

In my observation recently, the game is starting to suffer a reputation being branded as a "Space Truck Simulator" which in my opinion is damaging to the title and is a thing that drives potential new players away. A lot of players are also starting to share their level of interest to plummet as things get too repetitive and boring. IMHO, this is primarily due to missing multiplayer aspect and flawed game design features that impacts gameplay, social interaction and balance such as the ability to switch between Solo Mode and Open Play.

So are you satisfied with the way gaming sites brand ED as a Space Trucking Simulator?

How can we change the impression that ED is not only a Space Trucking Simulation but instead a living, breathing space ecosystem full of riches for the brave entrepreneur, untold mysteries for the bold explorers and danger for the cunning pirates and bounty hunters.

Share us your thoughts.

I'm not entirely sure its THAT bad, but certainly they should rename Solo to 'space trucker mode' after all, your not going to get many other player types there....

Well now the game has been out for some weeks I wonder if this will still be FD focus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yd-m9AR7mY

The majority of the team spoke of walking around the ship/station and planetary landings.

I don't think ED is a space trucking sim and it's certainly not advertised as such. The reason allot of players turn to trade is that it's the fastest way to make cash and (as I've said before) there are masses of tools available to turn a green pilot into a good trader in no time, http://www.elitetradingtool.co.uk/ anyone?

There's lots of various tweaks coming in the next update and I wonder if Wings will help change this 'opinion'.

ED can be branded as any of these:
Space Trucker
Bounty hunter
Explorer
Pirate
Miner
Space flight sim
Space combat sim
Space economy sim

It's up to the individual to decide. ED can be a totally different game for some, therein lies it's true beauty and potential.

I currently own a python "Guess what im doing with it". yep space trucking, seen a few player owned anacondas and asked them what they use it for "Guess what the answer was" yep space trucking , lol theres your answer

For me its still a sandbox. I do bounty hunting most the time, and sometimes smuggling. Sure my income sucks but i have a hell lot of fun doing it. And i can afford new toys it just take me a bit longer. I love the ability to mess around with different roles and i could never restrict myself to just one, no matter how effictive it would be.

I guess its just your approuch how you want to play the game. If you want min/max playstyle... well this could get boring.

Yep, trucking.

I was hoping missions would be a mainstay for me, but they're so lacklustre. All within 1 jump and no follow ups. You have to make a very conscious decision to leave the same little cluster of stars where you are rather than getting swept along picking up jobs here and there.
