Please Use the Correct Entry/Exit!

I once rammed an unshielded player cobra by accident.. They were following an NPC ship too close for me to see, propably using silent running or something to sneak into station. I boosted into the NPC just for giggles but only managed a glancing touch, the NPC bounced off my ship but the CMDR behind him hit my Type 7 smack in the middle. He was visible as a hollow square just for a moment before he exploded. :E

The lights are there for a reason. It is up to the community to make it work. Enter and exit with the green! I am pretty sure that is what was intended.
Yes, thank you. I didn't want this to turn into a thread about how stupid I was for not using shields...

The NPC community are a bit hard headed. They don't want to conform to any guidelines that aren't enforced. If I start trying to stay to the green side, I'm still going to have to fly like I do now, making sure I've got it clear before I go in. So...it really doesn't matter.

I am sorry for your loss but an T9 for example will use the middle and can not stop, thus ships without proper shields suffer this

<Crack> Oops soory sir!
<SCREEECH> Oi.. no worries a little spit an polish and it looks like new!
<CRUNCH> Ooooh that looks painfull!
<POP> .. my condolences...

Yup, the red one even flashes.

I was always taught that when dealing with ships, a red flashing light normally means "this is the port side of the vessel". If the idea was that everyone should stick on the green side or to keep the green to the left, I'm not sure why the AI would always fly with the green to the right (green = starboard, red = port) or why they and the docking computer would always always go down the middle.

Really, the only thing we can do is keep a careful eye out and hope everyone else does the same

Wait.. What? Judging by th enumber of NPC's I've seen blown up by stations, they don't even adhere to the rules that are enforced!

Z...

If somebody can find a way to make npcs follow this convention, then I will gladly use it correctly. Until then though, it's a bit pointless trying.

May be the problem is the users not looking at their RADAR before exiting? Also not targeting other ships to see which way other ships are coming and going. You can also see if someone coming in fast or not. There could be a reason why they are coming in fast. Like losing air. If you have to Zoom into your radar so you can see who coming and going. Using common sense goes a long way. How to dock with common sense

Oh god, not again.

There is no separate "entry and exit". A few people have decided it's that way despite having no firm supporting evidence and lots of contrary evidence. Even Michael Brookes (Frontier lead designer) has said outright that the red and green lights are just to mark the outside and inside of the doorway and are not "traffic lights". Noone else is gonna be responsible for your ship's safety, it's completely up to you - learn to use your scanner and stop demanding that other people look out for you.

Now, can a mod please merge this thread with the many other identical ones that noone searches for before making a new one?

It has nothing to do with choosing a side to enter and exit. Why do people insist on making things up? Read up on the hundreds of threads on the subject. the lights help with orientation, that is it.

I'm not making things up, they do flash.

Also calm down, Issmir's polite reply made it more clear to me.

Not everyone knows about the hundreds of threads you've seem before, chill out, you have too much sand on your cockpit.

It really is down to people making things up unfortunately. The game code is designed so that you fly down the middle and always keep the green light to your right, thats how the AI and DC 'Always' dock. The lights can also be used to help to orientate your ship before you enter the dock, but that is just a method you can use because the lights and pads are fixed to each other.

I appreciate people wanting protocol like keep left etc, but it's not going to work.. AI and DC will not follow that protocol, and anyone flying a Clipper or T9 will definitely not follow protocol.

i always take the "green" side in my T9!

and the red side at the same moment...

Part of it probably has to do with people having more experience with cars than boats or aircraft. Either way When I'm flying a Clipper, I'm going to be happy if I still have most of my hull coming through. When I'm flying a smaller craft I'll just keep an eye out and go in the fun way, because I am a glorious space duck.

Don't get me wrong, a protocol would be absolutely wonderful. But we'd really need a second door or a port authority that wasn't just "Hmm? What? Oh yeah. take bay... uh... 10? yeah 10."

That is the most entertaining part of flying an T9 with proper shields,
Autodocking on (because only real mean dare the lobotomized docking computer) and then watch the fireworks...
