Type 6 - is it viable?

So I need some help with a decision on whether to buy a lakon Type 6.

Currently I'm trading in my Cobra and making reasonable money but it's taking time which is something I don't have a lot of.

I was thinking of buying a Lakon Type 6 which would double my returns on trade runs however I have a few questions.

I've allocated 2m credits to buy and outfit the ship as a trading vessel (keeping an additional 2m aside for insurance and trade money). I'd like to keep and maybe upgrade the shields, probably leave weapons alone, and upgrade FSD, thrusters, cargo bays and maybe powerplant? Also I'd add Chaff launchers and a fuel scoop. Is 2m enough to buy the ship and upgrade to a workable level? What in your opinion should I upgrade and to what level? (Grade D,C?)

Secondly in my cobra, if I get interdicted I have a good chance to evade the interdiction altogether but if not I can still fight or run depending on the opponent (play solo so only NPC pirates). I've heard that the Type 6 is very slow & flies like a brick, can it evade interdictions and if not what are the chances of outrunning the pirate and getting to SC before I'm turned into salvage?

I know a lot of people fly them but i'm not that keen on being a sitting duck and having to pay out on insurance and lost cargo each time i'm interdicted. What are your experiences in a Type 6? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

first, find a good trade route in the cobra. Nothing less than 1.2k per tone average return. Then spend a weekend farming the living hell out of it in the T6. Then get the Clipper and you are just about untouchable and can still trade with even more cargo.

I run a Lakon-6 as well as the Cobra and it brings credits decently; glad I bought it. I run quite light, with a class 3 shield module and scoop. I've evaded the interdiction, but I think it will be ok using boost (run 2/4/0, maybe switching to 4/2/0 to soak some hits) and FSD out hopefully keeping shields and hull up; I don't think Cobras or Vipers can masslock you.

One funny thing about it is it actually yaws better than the Cobra, and possibly the Viper too.

Type 6 is a great ship

I'd recommend you focus on A rated FSD at 1.6mill, and 100t of cargo bay. That enables you keep the shield gen.
Upgrade other components as you make money, priority being thrusters, power plant and power distr to allow fast escape if interdicted
Type 6 will outrun everything up to Asp. Then your advised to donate cargo

I'm still enjoying mine - totally stripped out 104t cargo. It can evade interdictions reasonably well but also has enough to boost engines and get out if you do get stopped. Starting to earn some reasonable Cr with trade routes now plus started using one of the trading tools last night so talking 130,000Cr for a local round trip of about 7.4ly - got 8m Cr in the bank so will be thinking about a new ship purchase in the near future for some combat missions (prob a Cobra)

I reckon, go for it

Maybe you should google about eliteshipyard. There you can test each configuration just before buying it in game. Its a cool tool to see cost and a couple of differences.
If you've 2M to spend and 2M to trade you can just try it and keep your Cobra. If it isn't fitting for you just trade the Type 6 in.

Miklos

You don't need a fuel scoop before a Type7/Clipper. 4T more cargo means 8-12k CR more profit. That's more than enough to cover the fuel costs and you also decrease the time you need per run.

+1

The ship price per cargo ton is a real winner.

I fly mine without shields, since it's only a 15ly jump between my route. I get about 1k profit per ton each trip. You can grind to a Type 7 pretty quickly in a few days.

Seriously consider a heat sink launcher, the biggest difference I noticed when switching to it from the cobra is how hot it gets. A high rated power plant does help with this.

Get a T6 with 104t and A class FSD and it'll do wonderfully until you can afford the ASP (which is only 120t but a much nicer ship overall).

Go for it..!! It's the next viable choice.. You can squeeze 112 Cargo out of her.. Flexible, great FSD/PP/PwrDist upgrades for longer/easier trade routes.. If you want a flying brick that can carry a Good amount of cargo that's the way to go. Just watch how you boost, that ship has some inertia and turns like a whale!

or switch the powerplant to a C2 - still pumps out 8MW but has a better thermal rating

I have just swapped my Cobra for a T6 and at stock the T6 is an overheating bucket. But once you see what money you make on that 100t cargo the smiles start to roll in! Right now I have changed the guns to turrets (for interdictions while I run away) but like others here the FSD, power dist and thrusters are the upgrades to get. Yesterday I traded 60 tons of rares and netted 1.05 million credits in one go. In my old Cobra I had to strip out shields, guns etc to maximize cargo to net just half that (although the Cobra is immune to interception due to its speed).

I say go for it. Cobras are cheap to buy anyway. After one run you can buy another and go play when needed!

Flying a Type 6 without shields for 8T more profit per run? 1 error would mean that you lose 20 runs (of the additional profit).

So no, always fly with shields!

The plan was always to get an ASP eventually it's just going to take a long time if I stay in the cobra (plus I'll be keeping the cobra, very useful and low cost ship)

So an A class FSD for 1.6m - 300k on cargo bays + extras..... hmmmm.... might have to grind a bit more in my cobra before I get the type 6.

I've played around with the eliteshipyard tool but unless you know what is definitely needed and what is not it's kind of pointless...hence the post....thanks for all your suggestions :)

I'm runing a T6 with 104tn cargo capacity and it is so much more cridits/hour efficeint that a cobra it's a joke. Changes from stock:

Class B FSD - about 500k
Full cargo racks - not sure, probably 250k
Class D Power gen - cheap, 50k maybe?
Class A power distributor (again not that much)
No weapons or utilities - if interdicted i try to evade if it looks doable, if not submit and run - hence the A class distributor.

All in valus is about 1.8m i think, it's got a fully laden jump range of nearly 15ly and I can make nearly 900k/hr profit trading on my very reliable and safe route.

I gradually upgraded the cargo, base loadout has more than the cobra so don't worry about being cash limited on 104tn, get it as soon as you have the cash to buy and upgrade enough to do your route and fill the stock loadout on the more expensive leg plus insurance. Then just upgrade the cargo racks as you become capacity constrained.

When trading for a target goal it's all about credits/hour profit.
