I learned the insurance mechanism whilst in a Cobra. Luckily without cargo when the station blew me to smithereens due to an outstanding tiny little bounty for grazing a Fed Viper. Ah, yes, at the same time I learned to check my wanted status before heading to a station, and divert to an outpost if necessary.
I had enough for insurance then by some freak luck - and ever since I've left enough for the rebuy plus a decent cargo. It is not a skill, it do not require more brainpower than buttering up toast. It is just being cautious. I was going to call it common sense, but then I remembered that common sense isn't all that common, and when it is, it doesn't make much sense
The OP got my sympathies. It is a hard lesson to learn when one is so invested already. Though zipping around in an Imp-Cruiser, I'm pretty sure this wasn't the OPs first brush with the insurance-screen, how it works should not come as a surprise.
