On the scale of space ship design from Borg cubes to that ridiculously stupid looking Romulan dreadnaught thing with all the tentacles in the first reboot movie, the Elite ships are obviously more toward the utilitarian Borg side, the SC ships trend a bit more towards the unnecessary frilly side. It's space, aerodynamics matters not at all until you get into atmospheric flight, and that's where the Elite ships will lose ground a bit in the realism department in some cases. Flying a Sidewinder in the atmosphere would be like throwing a waffle iron like a frisbee. But, hey, that's what all those little thrusters are for in all the ships in both genres I suppose.

Problem solved.

Looks like deep space to me. Honest.

Haha! :D I saw some videos last night as i was interested to see some SC stuff. I couldnt make out space in most of the videos. Green/blue creamy nebula-ish backdrops with no visible stars. Not sure SC is about our space but an alternate one. So maybe those designs are perfect for their faux universe.

Yes you're the only one who finds them ugly.

The Elite ships are believable, consistent, distinctive and economical - why would anyone build things that even look complicated/expensive to build?

The only thing: we need loads more different ships to populate the Galaxy!

They just seem dull imo. Some of them are good looking , like the luxury ships . But most of the ships are ugly. And not a GOOD ugly (industrial ships like in the alien universe)

For example the sidewinder. Its boring . Its shape makes no sense. and it seems like it was imported from a top down bullet hell game.

It seems like most of the ships were designed around the fact they have to fit into the pizza slot of starports.

Star citizen has the right Idea i think.

It is the opposite for me.
I don't like most of S.C. spaceships design. They make me think that they do not belong to be in space.
It was really difficult for me to chose one of them when I decided to plegde for Star Citizen.

I love the ship designs. The sidey looks ripped right out of Star Wars. The viper is one of my favorite ship designs of all time (esp in yellow). The asp is a big hit with me as well, reminds me of the millennium falcon. Taste in aesthetics is subjective. I feel like the ships look very utilitarian and sturdy but with an obvious retro feel.

I also enjoy many of the SC ships even though I haven't played it yet (and won't till there is more to it) and adore some of the ships in EVE. I think I just love spaceships.

If Interstellar and our modern aerospace engineers are to be believed, "flying wing" planes like the Sidewinder are the future. I can see the sidewinder performing atmospheric flight. It would behave like a bullet with control planes.

With space LASER bullets!

I don't really see the problem with unaerodynamical ships for planetary flight. For reentry, sure, but for level flight? Ships in both Elite and SC have two-digit level main thruster acceleration, and the vertical thrusters are strong enough to atleast carry the ship at a few g's. It's not like we need wings to not crash or something like that. It could help for manuevering, but then, we have ridicilously powerful manuevering thrusters in both games too.

Well, I think that ships in SC can generally be split into following categories:
1. Triangles - M50
2. Space sausages - Freelancer
2. Ugly ones - all of them.

:D

I don't know if I voted right. I voted YES, you're the only one that hates the look of most ships in this game.

The Star Citizen ships look nice but in a way they look a lot less functional and a lot less realistic. Besides, before that game is released we will probably have news about the RTS module, point and click module and the action RPG module. In other words dont hold your breath :p

I think it was today or yesterday they achieved 70 million $ in funding, if you think about that for a minute I don't think that kind of cash flow will continue once the game is released, so its probably in their best interest to keep it in 'development' for as long as possible. I mean look at the figures for yesterday alone, $166,000, yep that's not bad at all for a game that is not even supposed to be out for a very long time.
