it's completely subjective but i like all the designs. they're unique and have their own charm. you can see that a lot of love went into all of them. and there's a style for everyone i think. there is the federal drop ship that looks more practical i guess and the python that has a more organic look to it. yea, i like all of them but there are some that i like more than others.

The other factor that I think should not be forgotten is that there is a design decision with Elite ships to minimize the graphic generation/rendering cost. The more fancy you make the ship the more polygons you need to generate. The fascinating question is the impact of highly detailed ships on the processing power requirements of the games. This will become particularly critical when landing on planets where polygons need to be crunched for the terrain/buildings/ship

I backed SC with a single ship (315p explorer) and after playing Arena Commander wished I hadn't. I think there's hope for the game but it's not the game I thought it was when I backed. I'm treating it as an FPS and will be joining in on boarding ops but I'm not going to grind away for ships in that universe. I absolutelty HATE HATE HATE tacked on crap. It always remind me of the fake air scoops on 90's "sport" cars.

Have to say I like the look of most ships in the game, but one that kind of disappointed me is the Imperial Clipper.

"- Wait what!?"

Yeah, I know most regard it as a great looking ship but imho it looks way too much like a modern passenger jet, à la something from Boeing or Airbus.
Probably the nose part that gives me that impression and it's not like I find it _ugly_ but I always imagined imperial ships more "pointy" and "aggressive looking" like in the old Elite games.

Besides that, no! I'm impressed with the ship design so far.

I feel the opposite. I don't like most of the star citizen ship designs. Specifically because they look fragile and not like they are up to deep space exploration or combat. Just my personal feelings though - is obvious lots of hard work goes into them.

same only 3 ship in all of the whole game i like Avenger/300I/Hornet and that all

While i quite like some of the updated version of nostalgic ship designs im hoping eventually there will be destinct differences between ships of differing manufacturer as well as more exploration in the design of the ships, at the moment they all seem to be based on triangle shapes and id like to see more unconventional designs as well as non-symetrical ships.

I think that the perception of the Elite Dangerous ships is distorted because there is not yet the possibility to appreciate the REAL scale of them.

Oh but there is. Go into the Outfitting screens in an Oculus Rift and you get a very good feeling of the scale. And damned impressive it is too.

Personally I love the looks of the Cobra and the Viper. Most of the ships look the way they do because they are based around the 1984 originals, and there's nothing wrong with that, gives the game a bit of depth. But you can't please all of the people all of the time. If you don't like them then that's just fine, but don't go telling me what I should like and dislike (that last bit isn't for you Sterlino ;)).

Eye of the beholder and all that.

My personal opinion is that the elite ships look a lot more believable than anything I've so far seen in SC (I haven't seen more than a handful of theirs to be fair though).

As with most things in ED - the ships have been designed to do a job.
They haven't been designed to titillate a 14yo; they have been designed to be functional and keep a retro feel...

They've been designed to titillate us grandads and I think they did a cracking job!

The ships like Cobra and Sidewinder look like they do because you can do hidden line removal easier with convex shapes.
There was no other way to do it on a 8 Bit 1Mhz machine in 1984.
Now the designes are legend and i like them as they are.

Even in 1990 Chris Roberts needed to use 3D sprites for Wing Commander because he couldn't render these complex shapes in realtime on a 386 33Mhz.
Strike Commander was his first real 3D game and needed a 486 50Mhz.

BTW i like the The Star Citizen ships too expecialy the M50 racer.

Star Citizen's ships look alright to me if a bit overdesigned.

But yeah I can't agree with you that Elite's ships are ugly. I love the simple distinctive shapes. The artists have done a great job of keeping the classic profiles while still packing the models with fine detail.

I say the ships that Look ugly are on Star Citizen. In Star Citizen they look paper thin.

Let´s bring the ED ships up to the technical standards of SC ships first, shall we?
Talk about beauty afterwards.
Anyway, bad idea to bring SC into the dicussion. Really, really, bad idea.

really, these comparisons won´t turn out in favor for ED so, just let it be

That is entirely subjective. One may say that the SC ship you showed is just the most ridiculous looking thing ever, and the ED ship you showed is just the best looking thing ever.

The opposite opinion is equally valid.

Anyway, bad idea to bring individual taste into the discussion. Really, really, bad idea - because it can never go anywhere.

Honestly, and I'm not even trying to be sarcastic, but I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. The SC ship looks fugly like hell and at first it reminded me of a screenshot out of a pre-rendered 90's game FMV (it isn't, right?)

Rubbernuke, not to be picky, but you can make some damn tasty liquor out of orange ;)

I think the Retaliator looks like crap, personally. But it's all personal taste.

While I'm looking forward to SC, the ship designs have never been part of it's appeal to me. Elite's ship designs don't wow me, either, but they do look a lot more believable. They look like sturdy machines, designed to do specific jobs. SC's ships look like toys to me. And toys that break on Christmas morning, at that. While you're trying to turn it into a robot.

Personally, I think the best looking ships are in EVE. I like really weird, un-aerodynamic designs like the Merlin.
