Navy Progression - Are you being serious?

So, back in the day of FFE, I remember having to do the following to gain ranks:

ranks 1-3 - take message from System A -> System B (you might get lucky and get a Ross128 or Facece permit out of it).
Ranks onward - > you could carry on with courier missions, some which might get a little heat, but it would take you ages to rank up. Much better taking assasination or photography missions.

In ED, it seems the most crazy navy progression Ive ever seen. For me:

Outsider : Find some combat stabilisers. You dont get long
Serf: carry some cargo for us
Master: carry more cargo for us
Squire: Assasinate some guy not towing the party line who has a clipper and is not wanted.
Knight : Kill a load of pirates
Lord: kill some more pirates
Baron: Take 3 tonnes of grain to another port in the same system you're currently in. You've got 3 hours to do the job.

What? Really? Seriously?

I would expect something like go kill some more opeople not towing the line, or go to a warzone kill a load of enemies. Or maybe even kill an elite anaconda

But deliver 3 tonnes of grain? (I also had the choice of 2 tonnes of food cartridges, as did my friend)

Can someone please fix this - its a bit of a joke?

Count yourself lucky, I think the missions have all but dried up. I've left the federation and now trying imperial hoping to find some (which I didn't want to do)

Yep, it's a bit dumb. There should be a difficulty curve. Still, as long as I qualify to buy a Clipper, I'll tow that grain to the restaurant at the end of the universe, if need be... ;)

I assume they have an agent at the granary and have actually hidden something very very important in those cannisters of "mere" grain. A tiny data chip, perhaps.

Or, maybe someone very important really likes waffles.

I think it would be much better if there was various tasks generated, fitting your rank. The introduction mission could be something simple like hauling, and then you're ''in the system'' and any bulletin board you visit might contain a naval job for you.
Reward, difficulty and complexity of the task scales with your rank. Succeeding with mission makes you proceed towards the next rank, failing them will push you backwards, but it stops at zero (you don't get demoted, the worst thing you can loose is your progress to the next rank).

I dont really care theres no endgame to it. I got the clipper at knight at a friendly station back in 1.04.
For its more about the kudos for myself of having the rank. But when all I need to do is take some grain - there really is no point. The only thing I can think its there for is placeholder for a future update.

Yes, unfortunately they were being serious. Really, really poor effort.
.
Military progression in Frontier was a 100x better, and took 100x longer. There was no place in the universe that didn't have coils of superconducting wire and blank data cards before you started to get the good missions.

My first mission with the federation was to get non-lethal weapons so no smuggling required. I was already friendly with the feds though so maybe that made the mission different?
Doing some Imperial stuff at the moment and I think the missions are the same

Brave Sir Knight, I will extend your land and your titles if you can deliver this precious grain to yonder space station.

It does seem a bit crap.

Hey, do the ranks collide? Like, being a Baron prevents you from getting ranks with Feds? Or you can go to the top rank in all the fractions?

it seams they rushed the rank missions /system just to say its in the game when it was released but atm it serve no purpose at all.

In FE when you gained a rank you got options to do harder missions.
Anyone remember the photography missions or the Nuke missions?

I think missions in general need an overhaul, the ranks as they are don't really serve a purpose outside of RPing.

Nope. You can attain ranks in either at present.
.
Yet another ball dropped there - the game should be about hard choices. Instead we get the Bethesda mentality - yes! you can be Baron of the Empire, Commander of the Federal Fleet, Archmage and head of the Thieves and Fighters guilds! We don't want to deny you the possibility of being all you could ever be! (sigh...)

Yes. I think I did a couple of nukes, but way more photography ones.
I remember not understanding how to get the bonus for particularly good photos. Sometimes Id take loads of close ups from <1k and not get the bonus, then other times Id do a quick fly-over and get the bonus.
Also, IIRC, the photo missions were always lisited even before you had a rank, starting "CLASIFIED", but unless you had a decent rank you couldnt take them.

Sadly this situation is going to be hard to fix, they'd either need to reset our ranks or add new ones.

The missions are disappointing as they are. Between promotions there should be lots of combat and spying missions. Maybe also some smuggling illegal stuff into enemy systems or from enemy systems. Promotion missions should have a difficulty curve.

I wish they'd leave some of the community 1.1 stuff for after they've added more bulletin and USS missions.
