Fix Alt F4 in Patch 1.1 please

Others keep saying that, and I'm not gonna get into details but it's false. They also disable crc checking so people can very easily modify the client and cheat. Currently they are not actively looking at anything going by the people that are writing these exploits.

It's not just combat logging so ignore that. If they can't detect that then there are no cheats they can detect, so RIP elite. goon squad and eve mentality are the least of your concerns.

I can't link it as I'm sure it would get deleted so Google it but trust me combat logging is the tip of this iceberg.
I doubt this is going to put Elite into to the grave. At the most it is just going to make pvp less attractive. And honestly I don't really care. If they make earning credits more easier than just trading I would be happy to see more pvp. this game is still in development and as such only time will tell if it sinks or swims.

It may not, but either way it warrants a statement from the devs. If their only action was to declare it unacceptable and to moniter I feel it would drastically cut down on it's occurance and complaints.

The irony is if they implement greifer isolation the plug pullers are gonna get grouped with the worst of the PvP crowd. Even just a statement to that effect would probably go a long way towards nipping this in the bud.

We disagree. I don't believe FD is ok with rampant PK'ers. I've been in threads where they say so.
:
You can go on insisting that it's ok, but let's what he outcome is. In short order all you'll find in open are PK'ers, then what will you do!

ED gets game of the decade, just for making the griefers cry louder and more often than any game Ive ever seen if not for the total package. Braben genius at work.

Surely there would be some way to solve this issue without lots of computer-intrusive stuff?

In a Peer to Peer network solution like what is used in ED, unfortunately there is not. Its a limitation of the network design. The only way to combat this issue is to use a Client/Server network design and have the server resolve all combat action telling the client what happened. (Whether a hit was made or not.) This does not work for real time games because it causes a time lag. All FPS games suffer this issue. RTS and MMO's don't because they are Client/Server designs. EVE is trying to build a hybrid design where the player controls the ship but the server controls the guns and determines hits and damage. To fix this is a complete redesign of ED from the ground up.

The only way I can think of to mask this issue, is to replace a disconnected player with an Elite: Dangerous NPC in an exact copy of the disconnected players ship. This would allow the winning player the potential to still get a kill but would also allow the disconnected player to not suffer the kill. Its the only way to protect disconnected players while still satisfying the winning player. It would however not also prevent the exploit, just hide it.

I have been involved with threads where the Dev's have entered the conversation, and he/she was looking for comments on the best way to punish PK'ers in an appropriate way. I, and that Rev, don't suggest that PK'ing has no place in the game, but there is a notion that the game should discourage the behavior through a proper Bounty system, that has teeth.
:
Try and find a post of mine where I say differently. So long as a PK'er can pop a ship without consequences, the Combat Logger should be able to log.

Why would a pker have a problem with getting a bounty? That's content for a pker. And no they shouldn't be able to or the devs wouldn't have put in a timer. Seems to me regarding dev comments you are only hearing what you want to hear. In beta the anti PvP crowd litterly exploded on the forums about the need for teeth and consequences, and here we are. As I said look to the game it's not high on their priority if they even care.

Only time will tell. The Dev that interacted with that other thread was actively asking for input on how to appropriately discourage the PK'ers. So, we'll just have to see.

A player logs out during combat, they either did it intentionally or unintentionally.

Case A - as we have it now this happens:

The player who logged out gains the insurance money they would have lost had they stuck around and died.
The attacker loses the sight of seeing their opponent go pop and a kill on their stats.

Case B - with a time-out:

The player who logged out loses their ship (I'm unaware if they get a chance to rebuy with insurance when they log back in, probably not)
The attacker sees their opponent go pop and gets a kill on their stats.

So:

If the player intentionally logged out Case A is unfair on the attacker and Case B is fair on the attacker. In neither case does the attacker lose anything tangible or very important.

If the player unintentionally logged out Case A is fair on the player yet Case B is incredibly unfair on the player. Worst case scenario a player loses a multimillion credit ship it has taken them hundreds of hours to grind through no fault of their own.

As that's the case I'd vote to maintain the status quo, a time-out gains the innocent party very little and potentially loses the innocent party an awful lot. The game should protect the innocent party in all cases.

Braben genius at work.
Indeed, my pledge money well spent even when I got screwed with offline mode. And it doesn't look like they are getting any quieter. Presumably being griefers they just can't comprehend that it can't be fixed without a major rewrite. Keep up the good work, Frontier!

I'd love to see that implemented as it would be exploitable to the hilt. I.E. get a huge bounty and then have your buddy engaging / DCing until his account is maxed :) The later can be done in a private group.

I guess we disagree on the word discourage I feel it's adding balance, although it will discourage some of it, it will likely add gameplay for those that seek it. A bounty or assassination mission is gameplay, if the devs didn't want it, there would be punishments like losing progression, or cooldowns etc. Things like the merc addition decal being a pirate skull make me think they actually like the idea of PvP and the ideas in the ddf would encourage me to start doing it even though I don't currently. Different strokes.

I also won't cheat just because you make money faster than me, because I very well could use some of the unfixed exploits to even it out till the devs fix the game. But I doubt you'd argue that doing so is fair enough till they make bounty hunting more viable, or that it doesn't need fixing because the devs intend something that's not yet evident.

Jesus Christ Frontier, you can build a game for me to buy, but you can't instruct me on how I'm going to play it!

From what I've monitored, let alone played - some peeps like you are beyond instruction. Go on as you intend, kill everything in sight, and make every player fear you - or else bad things will happen to them.

I'm sure it feels good :)

It's been said a million times but here it goes. All they need to do is log the disconnect. When a player is reported you check and if there is a history they get whatever punishment. Maybe a statement saying you can't cheat to go along with it.

Or they could throw up their hands say it's impossible rocket science, and they can't figure it out and all 5 of you will believe them. Everyone else is gonna feel pretty ripped off.

At this point I'm convinced you are reverse trolling to get a response from the devs, so props to you.

Lol that's the thing people that play PvP aren't afraid of each other, they are just having fun. Talk about beyond instruction...

That is a griefer delusion speaking, I truly enjoy how the people I don't like got screwed here. And having some technical background, I also see no meaningful fix for it after looking in my network traces while playing. This makes me even happier.

It's been said a million times, by a Dev even. This subject is too tricky for a simple fix. The Dev even said that if putting the loggers ship in the AI's control was possible, they would have done it already.
