What is up with the mentality that piracy and PvP of any form is griefing?

Seriously. What the hell? When i dreamt of space sims as a child the excitement was a world filled with pirates/bounty hunters and dangerous pilots.

Why do i see so many posts where people actually hate pirates in an out of character way? Why do so many people feel entitled to trade through space with zero possibility of a loss? Why are so many people actually encouraging combat logging?

Man. We're playing a space sim. Totally don't recall Han Solo calling Boba Fett a griefer.

i love elite dangerous. love it. What i don't love are these creepy attitudes that unless you're playing as a goody-two-shoes trader you're somehow a griefer?

I'm not seeing pirates being called griefers on a frequent basis.

most people who are called griefers are the type of player that kills other players for no reason and with no intention of gaining money.

Creepy? If you annoy someone else in the game, they are likely going to block/ban/firewall/AltF4/laugh at you.

The only creepy thing is someone who feels the need to act like a mindless pew-pew in the first place.

This is why solo mode was made, so you could stop annoying us people who want to shoot each other. You got what you wished for, why do you need to keep coming down on us like that?

I keep having the exact same thoughts myself +1

No, I hate to break it to you but it really is creepy when people play a multiplayer game with open PvP mechanics and then get sociopathic about it.

Where are the sociopaths?

Are they all playing Solo? Perhaps they've all docked at Lave and are fighting over rares. Perhaps they don't exist at all - but are figments of imagination from the disturbed minds of the pew-pew crew.

Playing as a pirate is mindless pew-pew?
Trying to be a space criminal isn't a valid role in game?

Mindless pewpew is blowing new players up for no reason as they try to figure out the game. interdicting someone and demanding their cargo and destroying them for resisting is not mindless at all.

I like how the PvP people always seem to get called out for demanding the game be played there way...yet....

Today gamers have no idea what most terms mean.

Also, complaining is a form to get attention, and as much hard it is to believe, game forums end being attention bear hubs.

Exactly - Piracy is not mindless pew-pew. I think I've met 4 real pirates so far since Alpha. I enjoyed those encounters. Every other one has been simply mindless pew-pew.

If people find a way to spawn-camp players THEN I will agree that griefing is in this game. Until that time I will just say "hey tiddly dee"

And quite frankly, it's not like dieing in this game means too much, especially for traders who can just buy another identical copy of their ship. I remember a time where dieing in an mmorpg meant having to reroll your character and start from scratch. You guys have it soooo easy here.

People will play this game any way they see fit. I just have to wonder about the psyche of someone who thinks killing an unarmed trader carrying no cargo (or the pirate doesn't even ask or has room for the cargo) Sure its within the game rules and mechanics but whichever way you look at it someone who gets a kick out of ruining other peoples game is just a damn sociopath in my eyes. No empathy. Yeah you can do it....but why would you want to?

Because they know they can't do it in real life. Also just because someone does it in a game doesn't mean they would do it in real life, even if they could and wouldn't be punished for it. It's like when you play games like GTA or Saint's Row. Do you consider me a homicidal maniac just because I go around killing people in GTA?

They're all over the forums and cheering you on at this very moment, without realizing that everyone else is slowly backing away.

Oh, and if you don't like the way people are playing pirates, then you need to push for more mechanics that support the gameplay style so that people are enabled to do it correctly.

You may as well complain about the NPCs who attack you. Sure they ask for cargo, but honestly? Your cargo doesn't really go anywhere, the NPCs don't gain anything. PvPers on the other hand, gain entertainment for killing someone slightly harder than a dim witted NPC.

I don't think its that so much, as simply the opposite end of the spectrum to some PvP'ers that insist that every player should have to take part in PvP whether you like it or not, they tend to promote that statement because they want targets and dont care who they are, so solo play exists, then every one has a chance to something out of the game.

Why do so many PvP exponents have such huge chips on their shoulders?

Most people actively support piracy, bounty hunting and mercenaries in ED (I trade in open), but some of you refuse to admit the existence of the other type of player in the game.

In any society (including the ED galactic civilization), the percentage of people who are so mentally unbalanced that that can ignore their inbuilt sense of self preservation is vanishingly small.
Everyone else should be playing the game with the intention and utmost effort to not lose their avatar's life.

I have no problem with people choosing to role play that character type, but the issue is that ED's game mechanics allow players to play that role perpetually which spoils many other peoples' experience of the game, not just a few.

In real life, when a serial murderer is killed (as by the nature of his lifestyle he most surely and quickly will be) he is gone forever.
But in ED he just respawns a few seconds after his demise and does the same thing again ad infinitum - which is extremely immersion breaking. And there are far too many of them.

Wish people would play the game in a believable way, it would entice more people out of the group modes.
