NPC names are full of references to stuff... not really hidden.
I saw an NPC called Tarka Dal, which i presume is not a reference to the curry directly, but to a Red Dwarf episode where Lister and the Cat pretend to be aliens and names themselves after curries.

I was attacked by Tarpal Cunnel recently at a RES site. He couldn't handle his ship well. I wonder why?
