Looking for World War 2 flight sim - recommendations?

Since Elite Dangerous FORCED me to buy a Hotas :) .... I thought it would be good to take a look at some WW2 flight sims. I used to love playing in the European Theater on older sims. Battle of Britain etc.

I've not tried any in the last 8 years though so I'm keen to get any recommendations in case there have been developments.

My recommendation would be Il-2 Sturmovik 1946 - the steam version contains all patches and expansions of the sim.
New version Il-2 Battle of Stalingrad is also not bad but has a very few planes so far and its overpriced.

Hello there

Im desperately trying to repair my Cougar Hotas because of Elite but I bought it for IL2 Sturmovik.

IL2 rocks, but its not graphically pretty any more, but oodles of content.

Cliffs of Dover is far prettier, but flawed, but probably my main suggestion.

Wings of Prey is very pretty and whilst many poo poo it, it still sees regular outings in my library.

Now Warthunder evolved from Wings of Prey which in turn evolved from IL2, but although its F2P it feels like a pointless grind after a while.

If you want an SP game with sim leanings go for Wings of Prey. If you want a true sim, go for COD (with patches both official and unnofficial), for MP go Warthunder, but the fun soon wears off IMHO.

DCS is a good free modern sim that you can upgrade with paid for DLCs if you choose.

Yes, if you are looking for study sim level of details you should purchase WW2 planes for DCS. I have FW Dora and P-51 and I`m not looking back for any other WWII sims.

Thanks for the responses. I had a look at War Thunder. I don't quite follow how the game is supposed to be played. Racking points to unlock / research etc. I mean, it looks good but could do with something more straight forward.

IL2 Cliffs of Dover sounded like it was a turkey at release but reading up on it, the Team Fusion work done on it sounds like it's patched the game back in to health - and the game is about £10 on Steam. I suspect I'll try this next.

DCS is news to me - must check this out.

Many thanks again for the suggestions. When you fly a WW2 sim like this, at least you get some feel of how brave these pilots were. And the Battle of Britain era was a pivotal moment in WW2 in my opinion.
