So was multiplayer worth it...

I mean was the necessity to have multiplayer in game worth all the limitations that it introduces?

Like,
Instances,
Speed limits,
Combat flight model,
Non seamless transition between SC, HS and combat space
Non possibility to travel in super cruise between systems
Loading Screens(hyper space)

ETC

Is the current multiplayer model worth it?

I'm quite happy with the flight / combat model that we have, regardless - it is true(r) to the original game as was the developers' intent from the outset.

Yes!

Ok, so maybe I can't speak for everyone. But still...

YES!

All that was missing from my experience in 1984 was the ability to share that universe with other people. I was DESPERATE to share my triumphs and losses with my friends, meet random strangers frm around the world. I used to dream of giant theme parks where people would go and stay for a week to do nothing but play a giant space simulator together.

So yes.

for me it is. would not be much interested in SP to be honest. and ED is evolving so it will be getting better over time.

Without multiplayer they would have half the amount of customers they have now, from a business point of view it is definitely worth it.
And it's not even finished, we only have a very basic implementation of the multiplayer aspect in this game, it will grow.

A lot of the mentioned "limits" have fairly little to do with the fact that its multiplayer. They're just design choices or limits that have to be in place to support a galaxy this massive.

Hellz yes it's worth it. I concur with Issmir. The thing that always bugged me about Elite over the years is that it was always single player, I could never share my adventures with anyone. Besides, I think in this day and age, a game of this type, it's probably expected to be multiplayer to have any kind of longevity.

Oh gosh. I have that song in my head... Where did that come from???

Oh... and don't look that up on Google!!! Really... don't.

I've been enjoying myself so far - but it's still too soon to pronounce full judgement - which is kind of odd considering we're in release but there you go...

Not for me. In addition to the constraints already listed, you can add the cash shop and impossibility of modding anything.

Add a station? No.
Add a ship? No.
Change some ship/weapon stats? No.
Add missions? No.
Paint your ship? Cash shop.

Pretty well all my memorable ED moments have been multiplayer moments. Says a lot.

+1

And many others seem to also be having a blast:

Its no good the game only appealing to its old audience. It has to appeal to everyone, including all those for who a modern game HAS to be online.

Well if I wanted to play to a single player space games I'd play the X series or freelancer or freespace 2 all of which are superior to ED as a single player experience in various ways IMO . So for me ED is all about the multiplayer. Of course its a somewhat circular argument since ED would be a better single player game if it was dedicated to that but probably not dramatically so.

Yes it was worth it. I loved Elite Plus, back in the day (Never got a chance to play the original), but I always wanted to be able to pit myself against another human. AI's are predictable. They may be tough, but once you get their pattern, you've got 'em. Not so with humans. Just when you think you've gotten their pattern, they go and change it on you. So yeah, it was worth it. It was so worth it.
