Newcomer / Intro Is this issue widespread with GPU's? (ATI Radion HD8970M)

Hi Guys,

This is only my first post on here so bear with us..

Around a couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a video on gamereactor of E:D and have been captivated since. I have been a console gamer generally.

So far I have obtained a Alienware 17 with the GPU above, a CH Pro Throttle and a CH CombatStick to play the game. I downloaded E:D last night with no problems at all.

The one thing that seems to be out of place is when I go into the game Display options the card that is being utilized is the Intel. (Nothing else apart from this is visible as selectable)..

This evening I have discovered that my BIOS is easily accessible but all the items are listed but cannot be accessed - only date and time can be accessed /amended

I just wanted to ask if this is a known issue with the game?

Could it be a driver issue? (I have the latest installed)

Have you had this issue and got round it?

I want to play the game as soon as I can but wanted to ask you all for direction if you are able to

Thanks, Mark

I'm an Nvidia guy myself so have no experience with your card.

However it sounds like the PC isn't recognising the card and the game is trying to run on on-board graphics.

Can you see the card in your device manager in Windows?

Sounds to me like a driver issue but you did say you installed the driver...

Use GPU-Z ro determine if the laptop is using your AMD card or Intel card while you're playing. Often it shows as Intel but the discrete GPU is still used anyway on laptops.

NVIDIA also has a notification area icon that can show you this (you just need to tick it), but I don't know if there's something similar on AMD.

Defo sounds to me like the onboard graphics are overriding the Radeon card,i cant understand why your "locked" out of Bios ie only date and time accessible, keep us posted and like Cmdr Lowest says check your card in device manager

and also have you got Catlyst control Centre running pal,il look at my bios and see what i can do.

Yes, the 8970 is visible in the Device Manager

Copied and pasted off Toms hardware pal...dont know if this will work but good luck

"You need to go into Control Panel and set the Radeon as your primary card.
Most MOBs do not let you disable the IGPU.
Could we get your MOB to see?
The setting are under Appearance And Personalization.
Click on Display. Then click Adjust Resolution on the side panel.
In the Display tab click on the drop down window and pick your card.
You may need to have another monitor plugged into your AMD GPU.
If the screen just goes black and nothing happens wait a few sec. and Windows will revert the changes.
Make sure to boot up in Safe Mode and install your GPUs drivers.
That should fix your problem. The computer will see the drivers and use that card.
Make sure you uninstall the IGPUs drivers when you get the AMD working.
That should work. Happy Computing! :) "

A quick peek on the net confirms to me that you have to disable onboard graphics in Bios Treadstone

Thanks adger, the problem here is everything is locked out (greyed out) on my BIOS with only time and date adjustable..and I can see the onboard and the descreet in the list

One thing I did do last night was disable the onboard via the device manager, restart the game, and it defaulted to the base gpu.. 'Renderer' it was called or something..the graphics where crap and my fan sounded like a helicopter

I haven't got any other PC games to try at the mo so bit of a bummer

will keep seeking information...

Have you tried playing the game yet? What's the framerate like because I seem to remember that there was a glitch with some cards where it says it's using integrated graphics but it actually uses the card.

"Mobile PC Display" is the only item in the Display drop down window

Please advise what a MOB is and how I can obtain?.. Thanks for all the assistance

Had a bit of a nosy about Treadstone and Alienware have a possable keypress?? FN and f7 to enable/disable onboard graphics?? im not an alienware owner so im not sure as Tettric says have you tryed the game..try the first combat tutorial and press CTRL+F and have a look at your fps, hope you get this sorted mate..whats puzzling me is that the 8970 shows in device manager..weird

You bought all that fancy gear and plug it into a laptop... You could have got a more powerful desktop PC and 3 displays for the same price or less, but I digress.

The game reports the first listed grapics chip, which will be the Intel one. You can tell if the game is actually using the Intel graphics chip because you'll get 5 FPS. If you're getting a resonable framerate, don't worry about the misreported information.

Disabling the Intel chip in BIOS will have the effect of forcing the AMD chip to appear in the game client, but it will also cause your power usage to increase and battery life to decrease.

If I had the room mate I would have a setup like that believe me : )

But I could be in the same boat with this issue. For some peculiar reason the games adapter option has only the Intel displayed and I cant even see the card in any res settings. This feels like I'm missing something stupid and quick to fix..but as always with PC its a very long road to get there. In the meantime to answer adger .. here is my motherboard info..

Launch the game in the mode of your choice.

Hit Ctrl+F to bring up the FPS counter. What FPS do you get, both in space and inside the station?
